Marvin Austin Video (and by Extension Other Young Giants and Panthers) Vs the Panthers

I stumbled upon this while reading one of my daily blogs. While watching the video it’s clear to see why the New York Giants drafted him in the second round. He has a very solid build and rare explosiveness from a defensive linemen. He has good pure speed for a man his size as he showed on a stunt play. But you can also see where the year off has hurt him and where he has room to grow. He doesn’t maintain great leverage on more than few plays and is easily washed out of the play. He also ended up the ground a couple of times, which you don’t want to see. At one point towards the end of the video you see Austin beat the offensive linemen, but it looks like he’s held pretty badly which keeps him from getting a sack or at least putting on more pressure. Talented player, but still has a ways to go after coming back from a season long suspension. What you do like from what Austin showed in this game is that it didn’t look like he took any plays off. The biggest difference between talented players like Austin who succeed and fail is often whether or not they can consistently bring their lunch pail to work or not.
