Buffalo Bills Cut Former First Round Pick Aaron Maybin
Just a couple of days after trading former first round pick Lee Evans to the Baltimore Ravens, the Buffalo Bills have decided to move on from 2009 first round pick Aaron Maybin, a defensive end/outside linebacker who has struggled (to put it lightly) to adjust to the NFL level.
Maybin is still extremely raw, and there are reports that he checked into Bills camp at 225 pounds which is far too light if you intend on playing DE or OLB on an NFL defense. Maybin has speed and pass rush ability, but he is still extremely raw, and anyone who saw him at Penn State knows this. He didn’t even start until about a quarter of the way through his redshirt sophomore year when he had 12 sacks, and then the expectations sky-rocketed when he became a first round pick of the Bills.
Maybin is only 23 years old, and is entering his third year in the NFL already. If he still has a passion for the game, perhaps getting cut by the team that drafted him after only two years will provide him with some motivation to play better, perhaps to add some weight. He will be placed on waivers, and if he clears, he is free to sign with any NFL team.
My guess is that he will undoubtedly get another chance to prove himself this pre-season. Had he stayed in school all four years, this would technically be his rookie year. Obviously he has not adjusted properly to the NFL game, but given a change of scenery and a new coaching staff, and perhaps a lot less pressure–Maybin could work this thing out.
