Green Bay Packers Training Camp Updates

Up Next in my series of tracking how players (especially the young ones) are doing in training camp is the Green Bay Packers.

From JerseyAl.com

While many saw the drafting of Randall Cobb as writing on the wall for Driver’s time in the starting lineup, he showed no signs of slowing down during the practice I witnessed.  Driver made a stellar tiptoe catch on the sideline on one play and then later caught the ball from Aaron Rodgers over the middle (Driver’s specialty) and was able to spin and juke his way out of a tackle.

As for Cobb, what else can I say? I don’t want to place unrealistic expectations on the kid, but he has incredible athletic skills.  During kick return drills, he twice burnt the coverage unit and in passing situations his agility as on full display as he made leaping catches and plays down the middle.  He definitely has promise. Someone even mentioned Desmond Howard when watching Cobb return kicks.

While the return game seems to be on the upswing, the kickoff and punt coverage still seems to be lacking.

The unit was burned not only by Cobb but also by fellow rookie Alex Green out of Hawaii—A RUNNING BACK!  Despite being the most maligned member of the Packers coaching staff, special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum definitely let his players know their coverage skills were poor.  He was constantly reminding players to wrap up their opponents

Sayre was very impressed with what he saw on Alex Green on film leading up to the draft and he was pegged as one of our late round sleepers, so it’s not surprising to see that he’s leaving a good impression on the fans of Green Bay.

Notes: Inside linebacker Robert Francois is making a charge for a roster spot. Francois was called up from the practice squad last year and played special teams, but the club needs an inside linebacker to back up A.J. Hawk and Desmond Bishop. Francois has decent athletic ability, but has to get off blocks faster and stay gap sound. He’s on the starting special teams units, so he has a good shot at sticking.

QB Aaron Rodgers on the offense, which had three fumbles and a slew of penalties Monday night: “We have a lot of young guys that need to figure things out a little bit. Our defense is not the easiest to play against. They have a lot of different looks and blitzes. We just need to do a better job of the fundamentals.”

Aaron Rodgers and offered a wry grin and a pistol-quick response to the question about Monday night’s sloppy play. “We talkin’ about practice,” the QB quipped, impersonating Allen Iverson in his infamous 2002 rant. “We’re not talking about a game. We’re talking about practice. Practice?”

How’s the Green Bay Packers  First round pick Derrek Sherrod doing? Well, not great it seems.

In Green Bay’s zone-blocking scheme, guards need to be mobile and quick to get to the second level, but rookie Derek Sherrod’s talents still seem wasted inside. He’s athletic, long and has great feet — the perfect pedigree for left tackle, which is where he probably belongs. Sherrod’s struggles at guard should signal a golden opportunity for T.J. Lang. When you follow things in training camp you learn interesting things like Sherrod is slotted as a guard currently with the Green Bay Packers and apparently has been struggling throughout training camp, at least according to CBSsports

Who’s the surprise standout WR for the Green Bay Packers, second year WR Chastin West.

QB Aaron Rodgers just connected with second-year WR Chastin West on a beautifully thrown, 55-yard bomb into the end zone. West — along with undrafted wideouts Shaky Smithson and Diondre Borel — looks really good and should be able to find a home on an NFL team that isn’t already stacked at WR. Packers RapidReports

West is an interesting name to keep track of he could be this pre-seasons Victor Cruz (New York Giants) who lead the league in preseason receiving yards.
