Miami Dolphins Training Camp Recap

Football is back and along with it comes the pressure of impressing the coach and trying to win a starting job, especially for young players. How are they doing in their quest to make a N.F.L. team or become a starter? I’ve been reading training camp reports for various teams to check out how the rookies and young guys seem to progressing. Today I’ll take a look at what’s happening in Dolphins camp. Unfortuantely, I can’t make a live appearance, but here’s what I’ve gathered from around the web.

First a video recap from The Orlando Sentinel

From the Palm Beach Post

Edmund Gates is now apparently Clyde Gates.

Drafted as Edmond Gates, he now goes by Clyde, a nickname his father has had most of his life. As the story goes, Edward Gates was in trouble with the law so much his friends compared him to the legendary Texas outlaws Bonnie and Clyde. The nickname stuck

Whether he’s Edmund or Clyde he’s been impressing at Dolphins camp.

“He had a couple reps the other day where he got on top of people and ran right by them,” coach Tony Sparano said. “I see a different gear than what we had (last year

But that doesn’t mean he’s quite ready to explode onto the scene yet.

“From a fundamental standpoint, he has a long way to go,” Sparano said. “With all due respect to where he played college football, he played at a little bit lower level and he was a big fish in that pond. So he has a lot to learn, but a good group to learn from.”

From he Sun Sentinel.com (August 3rd)

It was a super hot day. Half the team went in for IVs. Big Paul Soliai is just chillin. It’s a new day. Proud of the guy. He’s worked hard.

Reshad Jones just intercepted a pass from Tom Brandstater on a deflection from Jimmy Wilson. I like those two.

— Clyde Gates caught a long TD pass after beating Chris Clemons on an under thrown pass from Chad Henne.

I’m not a big fan of Daniel Thomas running toss sweeps. Just saying.

From phinsider.com

Running back Reggie Bush took his first carry and followed rookie center Mike Pouncey on his first carry.  The result? A 30-yard run.

After the workout, Thomas stated, “I can tell right now, the holes are closing up faster.  But you’re going to get better through time.”

So far it seems that fans aren’t entirely happy with Chad Henne being back as one day in  training camp they were shouting “we want Orton, We want Orton”. Other than that the big news is that Clyde Gates is impressing and definitely bringing the speed the Dolphins desperatedly wanted on offense (coupled with Reggie Bush and they now have two of the most dynamic/speed players in the game). There is very little about Mike Pouncey positive or negative, but so far in my few days of scouring the news wire for training camp reports, little has been said about offensiive linemen. It also seems like Daniel Thomas is struggling a bit to adjust to the speed of the N.F.L game, though he obviously expects to figure it out soon.
