St. Louis Rams Offseason Review
By Editorial Staff
Now that the CBA is officially ratified and the new league year, I’ll allow myself to take a look at the moves made by my hometown team, the St. Louis Rams. Far removed from their only glory days of my lifetime, CKA the Greatest Show on Turf, my fellow St. Louisans are very excited about the future of their franchise, with Sam Bradford being hailed as the next Kurt Warner, minus the grocery experience. Here we go.
Key Free Agents
-Quentin Mikell, FS
O.J. Atogwe was cut for financial reasons (he was due a massive bonus) and then signed with the Redskins for different financial reasons (Dan Snyder, throwing money at 30 year olds). Mikell is a little overpaid but fills a big need here, as Craig Dahl is not a legitimate starter.
-Harvey Dahl, RG
Dahl has come a long way from being an UDFA and was one of the better guards in the league last year. This is a great pickup for the Rams as it allows Bradford to have a more solid and consistent pocket.
-Mike Sims-Walker, WR
The Rams seemingly has a roster full of #2 and #3 receivers, with no one player being able to step up and claim that spot due to injuries and inconsistencies. Sims-Walker is on a one year contract with little guaranteed money, which makes this a great opportunity to land talent at a low cost. Right now, Danario Alexander seems to be making his way to the top of the depth chart, but I expect Sims-Walker to challenge him enough to find a place on the Sunday roster.
Impact Rookies
-Robert Quinn, DE
Chris Long will draw a lot of attention from opponents blocking schemes, and expect Quinn to reap the benefits if he stays healthy. Quinn is a big talent that fell to the Rams due to the run on quarterbacks.
-Austin Pettis WR/Greg Salas WR
Both are good possession receivers, and one of these two will provide the complement to any eventual #1 receiver that steps out of the huddled masses. Neither has excellent speed but both have a lot of potential and agility and either could be a good secondary target for Sammy B as the season progresses.
St. Louis added several starters this year, and depending on how the Great Kevin Kolb experiment turns out they could very well win a weak NFC West. They will need to focus on their secondary in the upcoming draft in order to solidify a place on top of their division.
