Report (via Twitter): Nnadmi Asmougha Will Sign With Jets or Cowboys
I’ve been harping on this for awhile, but twitter makes reporting so much easier. People can get all the creidt for reporting something in 140 characters or less and sometimes don’t even have to follow that up with a report if you don’t want to. Anyway, Michael Lombardi tweets that Nnadmi Asmougha sweeptstakes come down to “Ryan vs Ryan” Cowboys vs Jets.
Two of the most love/hate teams in the league, one from each conference are vying for the biggest free agent on the market. The Dallas Cowboys are in desperated need of secondary help, a position they didn’t address well enough in the draft according to many fans. The Cowboys have some talented cornerbacks on their roster, but Michael Jenkins has been uneven and Terrance Newman has battled injuries and not been as effective as he was in his prime. According to something I was watching last night (Sorry I can’t proper credit, might have been the Wheelhouse on SNY), the Cowboys are likely to cut Terrance Newman if Asmougha will agree to a deal.
The New York Jets on the other hand do not need a cornerback as talented as Nnadmi Asmough and some question whether or not he’s a good fit for the Jets. Who need a pass rusher more than anything. Perhaps the Jets are hoping that Nnadmi Asmougha is enough of an upgrade over Antonio Cromartie to allow the Jets more coverage sacks. I’m not sure. Either way, is if Asmougha is looking for the spotlight, he’s on the right track if the top two contenders for his services are the Cowboys and the New York Jets.
My gut feeling is that the Cowboys will end with Asmougha. I’ve though since early February when I was hoping there would be free agency that Asmougha was bound for Dallas, but we’ll let you know our thoughts on the choice Asmougha makes when it happens.
Though ESPN NFC East Blogger Dan Graziano disagrees with me.
My take? I’m not buying Nnamdi to Dallas. Everything I’ve heard in the past couple of days has indicated that he’d like to play for the Jets and that they’re fired up about getting him. Dallas’ sudden entry into this chatter feels like the Asomugha side trying to prod the Jets into offering more, since the Cowboys are believable as a suitor because they haven’t done anything yet and are known to covet big names
