NFL News: New CBA Same Old Holdouts; Giants, Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles, 49ers Can Expect Holdouts
There’s a new C.B.A, but not all players are happy. There are a few high profile players expected to hold out for bigger contracts.
Chris Johnson has long been reported considering holding out for a bigger deal. And I can’t blame him. In a sport without guranteed contracts at a positon that seems to be measured by minutes instead of years all running backs should consider striking the iron while it’s hot. While the additon of Hasselbeck could help the Titans immediately, they are not realistic superbowl contenders this year and Johnson’s shelf life, like all running backs is expiring. For perhaps the most dangerous player in the league, Johnson deserves more money while he can still get it.
In Philadelphia it’s been reported as official now that superstar and diva WR DeSean Jackson will not show up Wednesday or Thursday. Jackson has 23 days to report before he loses his “fourh accrewed year status” towards free agency he’s likely to show at some point. Jackson is a pint size, explosive WR who is always at risk at getting pulverized. He’s very important to the Eagles and looking to make a buck and get a long term extension. The cap space will not be a problem for the Eagles.
Unlike the Eagles, the New York Giants are up against the cap and one of their star players, DE Osi Umeinyora plans on holding out of training camp. Umeinyora claims the Giants promised him a pay raise and said as much in litigation and documents during the lockout. He has been disgruntled for awhile and this will not come as a surprise. But the Giants have lost two DL this week already (Coefield signed with the Giants, they will cut Rocky Bernard) and Mathias Kiwanuka is a free agent. The renowed depth of the Giants defensive line could be shaky if the Giants are forced to move Osi, though they are likely to get decent value for him as teams put a premium on pass rushers, and considering Charles Johnson’s huge contract, Osi’s contract could be considered a bargain.
Adam Schefter, perhaps the most money Football reporter out there is reporting that Frank Gore, of the San Francisco 49ers is planning on holding out for a bigger contract. I’m not sure he’ll get it though. Gore is a dynamic back and important to the 49ers offense, but he’s battled injuries all throughout his career and nearing 30 could be too much of a risk for the 49ers. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle this situation.
So while there’s a new CBA that was pretty much unamiously apporved and supported, it still seems that hold outs won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
