NEW Report: Barry Cofield Headed To Washington

It’s 9:30 here on the west coast, but that is not stopping agents and GM’s to continue to work on signing free agents. A big signing was just reported. The Washington Redskins have come to an agreement with free agent defensive tackle Barry Cofield according to Josina Anderson of FOX 31 in Denver. Adam Schefter also confirmed the report. The deal is reportedly for 6 years while the exact dollar figures were not known.

Barry Cofield was one of the best defensive players on the market. Cofield, who has spent the last 5 years with the New York Giants, now heads to the Giants divisional rival. Cofield is a strong, solid defender who has put up solid numbers in his years with the Giants. He had a career high 4 sacks last season.

With the Redskins signing Cofield, this takes them out of the Cullen Jenkins race. Earlier in the day, Jason La Canfora reported that the Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys were both going after Cullen Jenkins. Now that the Redskins have Cofield, this could put Jenkins on the fast track to Dallas. However, there are still other teams who are interested in Jenkins so it’s by no means a certainty he ends up in Dallas. Along with Jenkins, Brandon Mebane is the other free agent DT who is on the market. Look for Seattle to try and resign Mebane, but the Denver Broncos will also make a push for him.
