NFL Free Agency: 4 New Signings; Alex Smith, Randy McMichael, Damione Lewis, and Noel Devine.
The free agent flux is in full force. We have already received word that Charles Johnson, Santana Moss, Quintin Mikell, Tavaris Jackson, Matt Leinart, and Marshall Yanda have all signed new contracts. Charles Johnson with the Carolina Panthers, Santana Moss with the Washington Redskins, Quintin Mikell with the St. Louis Rams, Tavaris Jackson with the Seattle Seahawks, and Matt Leinart with the Seattle Seahawks. Now, we have word that there have been 3 more free agent signings as well as a prominent undrafted free agent signing.
Alex Smith has signed a 1 year deal with the San Francisco 49ers. This is not a surprising move as both parties were interested in a return for the former #1 overall draft pick. Smith has showed some good leadership this off season going to team workouts while the lockout was still in place. Alex will have 1 year to prove he can be the quarterback the 49ers thought he was when they drafted him.
The San Diego Chargers have agreed to a 1 year deal with free agent tight end Randy McMichael. The Houston Texans have also signed free agent defensive tackle Damione Lewis. Both of the deals are veteran minimum deals. Randy McMichael was with the Chargers last year so he will continue to be a complimentary player to stud Antonio Gates. The situation for Damione is very similar. Damione was a part of the Texans last year and will be a role player this year.
Additionally, undrafted free agent Noel Devine has officially signed with the Philadelphia Eagles after early speculation had him heading to Atlanta. Devine turned heads at the Senior Bowl when he weighed in at just 160 pounds. He is a shifty back who will bring yet another explosive option to the Eagles already potent offense.
