Joe Webb Fires Up Favre Watch
By Editorial Staff
Right on time.
A day after writing an article about his potential replacement, he creates a buzz.
Brett Favre is throwing a football.
However, the reports say that Favre is only working as a mentor for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Joe Webb. Anybody with any knowledge of the NFL knows that this may just be the foundation for another Favre return.
The Vikings may have no other choice than to add a veteran quarterback to the roster when the lockout comes to an end. As I indicated yesterday, Donovan McNabb has seemed to be the heavy favorite to land that job. However, one would think the Vikings would remain very interested in retaining Favre as their quarterback if he was willing to return for one last season (or two, or three…). His familiarity with the team would put him miles ahead of McNabb in terms of chemistry and overall knowledge of the team.
The only question would be Favre’s asking price. Over the previous two seasons the Vikings have had to fork up twenty-five million dollars to get the Silver Fox in purple. Logic would say that McNabb would be the cheaper route, however, it wouldn’t have to be that way. If the Vikings were smart they would offer Favre much less than what they did the previous two seasons and force Favre to accept the reduced salary or find another team to throw interceptions for (er, play for).
All of this is pure speculation, but as past years suggest, Brett Favre speculation almost always turns into breaking news. And as if it weren’t big enough already, Joe Webb managed to stroke the 41 year old’s ego by saying this.
“He can still sling it.”
Get your popcorn ready, Favre Watch is on.
