2011 NFL Draft: News and Notes
Still looking for a good name for this series, but until then I’ll just stick with news and notes. This edition highlights stories about Cam Newton, the Norte Dame fighting Irish’s spring practices, and Nick Fairley’s upcoming visits.
Cam Newton is in high demand and will visit 9 teams. The Dolphins, Bills, Minnesota Vikings, Bengals, Panthers, Titans, then the Bengals again (using two visits with him must be very interested in him), The Browns (I don’t understand that one as much), Washington, and the Broncos (Sayre wrote about this last week, why are they using so many visits to see quarterbacks when they have two solid quarterbacks, and many problems elsewhere).
Adam Schefter now thinks that if the draft were held today Cam Newton would be the pick
National Football Post was on Norte Dame’s campus for spring practices and here are there thoughts and some thoughts on USC as well.
Profootballltalk says Nick Fairley has scheduled visits with 8 of the top 10 teams in the draft and the only two that are not scheduling visits are the Cardinals and the Cowboys.
Carolina Panthers’ G.M. thinks that criticism of Clausen is unfair.
You look at the history of rookie quarterbacks, and it’s really unfair to expect a quarterback to go in and have a lot of success as a rookie,
G.M. Martey Hurney has been described before as Clausen’s one supporter, so it seems if he’s making the final decision it won’t be a quarterback, but that it’s still very possible (as I pointed out with the Schefer link) that quarterback is the top choice in the draft.
A blogger at 85 percent sports has done a lot of research to highlight which teams are interested in what players Best yet, for once a blogger’s given a link to all of his sources (which is something that we will Always do here, it is completely unprofessional and unreliable if someone does not do that). It’s a pretty good source of what’s going on with your team and their draft interests. Check it out if you have the time or interest to know who you’re team has shown visited, interviewed, or attended prodays’ for the past couple of months.
When I interviewed Dave Halprin from Blogging the Boys he said there hadn’t been any drama with the Cowboys and Dez Bryant, but I’ve read differently and here’s another story about Bryant and his immaturity. This time, Deion Sanders says he’s no longer helping Dez Bryant and that he told the Cowboys before the draft that Bryant had to be looked over and watched (paraphrasing there).
Bengals are paying special attention to A.J. Green. Right now if I had to bet any money on it I think the Bengals go Julio Jones, A.J. Green, or QB. I think they try to add another talented WR to appease Palmer, or a QB to replace him.
Walterfootball has been following all of the Pro-Day info and has all the results
Green Bay Packers’ DL Johnny Jolly is in trouble with the law. He was found with 600 grams of Codeine, which is a felony charge. Also, he was driving with a suspended license, which is/was not eligible for renewal. It looks like defensive line is a direction the Packers could definitely go now early in the draft. In our full team mock drafts we gave Cameron Heyward to the Packers in the first round.
