Get to Know the Cowboys: David Halprin from BloggingtheBoys
We just posted an interview with the Z reports Lance Zierlein the other day, a Houston Chronicle blog that covers the Texans so I was thinking I might as get all of the Texas teams out of the way. So today’s interview from our interview series comes from David Halprin of Blogging the Boys a Dallas Cowboys blog.
1). Was it really all Wade’s Fault?
Not entirely, but he does get a large percentage of the blame. His team had become complacent and lazy, they believed their own hype, and he didn’t stop that, and when they started losing, he was unable to change it. And he was in charge of the defense, which played poorly for a lot of the season. Basically, he was given a ton of talent, but wasn’t able to get it to play at the maximum level. I think we all know that Wade is a defensive coordinator, but not a head coach.
2). What are the Cowboys biggest needs?
OL, CB/S, DE
3). Iv’e read Dez Bryant and the Cowboys weren’t all lovey dovey behidn the scenes. Was he showing some of that “TO” divaism we heard so much about before the draft?
There’s hasn’t been any problems with Dez Bryant. If there’s a diva on the Cowboys at WR, it’s Roy Williams. Dez has been everything that the Cowboys organization and the Cowboys fans had hoped for, and he’s only going to get better.
4). The N.F.C. East is loaded with talented and young WR. You get one for the next eight years who’s your pick?
It would be between Dez and DeSean Jackson, with Hakeem Nicks right behind them. I’ll go with Dez since I’m a Cowboys homer; his size, ability after the catch, his tremendous hands and body control makes for an all-around beast. Once he learns the game a little more, he should be a superstar. He’s also dynamic in the return game. But I have much love for DeSean Jackson’s game, too, even though I hate the Eagles.
5). What’sa player fans really want?
I think we’d love to have Patrick Peterson or Von Miller. Then again, who wouldn’t?
6). What’s a player the Cowboys seem to be targeting hard?
The word is they are taking a long, hard look at Tyron Smith. They’ve requested a lot of tape on him and they need help along the o-line. The question is do they want him enough to grab him at #9? Or will they try to trade back and risk him still being available. That’s if they go offensive tackle int he first round.
7). Best/worst pick(s) of the past decade?
Best pick is DeMarcus Ware. Even though they drafted him high and he was expected to be great, he’s been that and more. He is the engine of the Cowboys defense and our best player. If you want to go by value for when they were picked, I’d say Jay Ratliff then Jason Witten.
The worst? Let’s go with Bobby Carpenter. Because we drafted him in the first round, it was a huge misfire. He was nothing more than a special teams contributor. That is actually more than some of our other draft picks who never contributed, but they were either 2nd or 3rd rounders, Carpenter was a first-rounder.
8). How are the last two draft classes coming along?
The 2009 draft class was terrible. We had twelve picks and only a few have made any significant contribution. John Phillips at TE looks like a keeper, and David Buehler is a good kickoff specialist (jury still out if he can be the FGs guy, too). Victor Butler has made some contributions on defense and on special teams, but outside of that, most of the rest haven’t contributed yet. In fact over half are gone from the team.
For 2010, you have Dez who is working out great. Sean Lee stepped up his game in the latter-half of the 2010 season and we expect him to contribute a lot more this year. We only had 6 picks, and we’re waiting on a few of them to see what they do this year.
9). How will the defense differ this year from Phillips?
It will have more looks and disguising of the defense under Rob Ryan. It will likely be more aggressive, too. The Cowboys defense under Phillips had become predicable, offenses knew what was coming. Ryan employs more looks and tricks to keep the offense off-guard. He also seems to blitz more with his secondary than Phillips did.
10). What visits do the Cowboys have scheduled (or already have)
Tyron Smith, Von Miller, Will Rackley, Andre Holmes
11). Tell us about the site and why our readers should visit.
Blogging The Boys covers all aspects of the Cowboys and is updated multiple times a day. It’s a great place for readers to catch up on all things Cowboys, and we have a large and lively community that talks Cowboys football 24/7. We offer informed opinion and analysis, along with news and fun or slightly off-topic items. It’s a great place for Cowboys fans to hang out.
12). Anything elseto add….?
Yes, let’s all pray that we have a resolution in the labor mess soon, and the NFL rolls on as normal for this year, and many years to come.
