Denver Broncos’ List of Quarterbacks Growing

It all started with Jake Locker.

Now, all of a sudden, the Denver Broncos have more quarterback workouts than any of the teams in the top ten of the draft, and as far as we know here at NFL Mocks, that is not an exaggeration by any means.

Way back at the Senior Bowl, the Broncos reportedly were getting to know Andy Dalton up close. Then pro days started. Since Auburn’s pro day (featuring Cam Newton and Nick Fairley), the Denver Broncos have scheduled private visits with five of the NFL Draft’s top quarterback prospects, and sent their offensive coordinator to watch another throw at his pro day.

If you ask me, this smells of something more than just smokescreen.

To me, a fan of the Denver Broncos, it seems like the team has legitimate interest in selecting a quarterback in April’s draft. If that’s what it seems like to the fans of the Broncos, then what does it say to the multitude of teams behind them looking to draft a quarterback?

To even the casual fan, the Broncos’ crop of QB’s in Kyle Orton, Tim Tebow, and Brady Quinn seems to be a very solid group on the surface. All three of those guys have started in the NFL, two were first round picks, and one has been to the playoffs. So what gives?

The Broncos have scheduled private workouts with Washington’s Jake Locker, Auburn’s Cam Newton, Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert, Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick, and Florida State’s Christian Ponder. They also sent offensive coordinator Mike McCoy to watch Ryan Mallett’s pro day. Obviously, the Broncos are not kidding around. Those six guys are all expected to go in the first two rounds, maybe Kaepernick is a wildcard to go in the 3rd.

If the Broncos do take a quarterback, it could mean that Tim Tebow will never get a fair shot to succeed in Denver, and I doubt the Broncos really want to be the team that traded him away. I see huge things in Tebow’s future, and have been saying that since his college days.

Like I wrote last week, taking a quarterback would be a huge mistake for Denver. We’ll see how it all shakes out in April.
