CJ Spiller’s Disappointing Season

As the 2010 NFL draft approached many were singing the praises of Clemson running back CJ Spiller.  Spiller was tagged as a game breaker with the speed and ability to score from anywhere on the field.  During his career at Clemson, Spiller did everything he could to earn that playmaker tag.  He contributed on both the offensive side of the ball and as well as special teams.  There is no doubting the speed and ability of Spiller but some questioned his ability to run between the tackles.  In the NFL Spiller was going to face defenders that rival his speed and athletic ability and while at Clemson he didnt prove he was able to cleanly move the ball in the interior.  However, the biggest part of the NFL draft is projecting a players potential.  The rest of this article will talk about Spiller’s struggles and future.

Spiller’s rookie season has been a major disappointment to say the least.  Traditionally, rookie running backs make a big impact on their football teams but Spiller only amassed 437 combined yards and 1 touchdown.  Many felt that Spiller would be able to pile up yardage as he would be targeted in both the running and passing game.  However, things just didnt work that way and his 3.8 yards per carry made it tough for the Bills to give him the football.  Going forward this Bills coaching staff needs to find a way to Spiller more involved.

In the weeks and months following the draft I strongly felt that the marriage between Spiller and the Bills would backfire.  While I like the potential of Spiller he seemed like a luxury pick for a team with many needs at many positions.  As this season progressed it appears that the selection of Spiller remains a questionable decision for the Bills decision makers.  It is way to early to call Spiller a bust but from what we saw in his rookie campaign things don’t look very promising.  Let us hear your thoughts and feedback!
