College Football Game of the Week: #12 LSU @ #14 Florida

College Football is officially here and the writers at NFL Mocks could not be more excited to start evaluating some NFL Prospects.  You can count on at least 1 article a week that will highlight a big time College Football game a week.  The article will focus on identifying some of the top prospects from each team and the key match-ups within that game.

This game matches two teams coming off of less than perfect performances last week.  Florida was dominated by Alabama and a lot of weaknesses were exposed.  LSU avoided an upset because of a last second penalty for too many men on the field by Tennessee.  This week is a big game for both teams as they hope to get back on track.

LSU

  • LSU’s Patrick Peterson is the top player on our Prospect Big Board and he is a game changing player.  On defense he shuts down the opposing teams top wide receiver week in and week out.  Not only is he a good cover corner but he has elite kick/punt return skills that makes him a threat to score every time he touches the football.  Peterson has shown why we have him rated #1 overall and he has a chance to be a top 3 selection in the 2011 NFL Draft.

  • In our initial Big Board we had LSU wide receiver Terrence Toliver in the top 25 but after the first few weeks of the season we removed him from the Board.  Now I know there has been quarterback struggles but Toliver has completely disappeared this season and it is costing himself a lot of money.  However, this weekend could be a good opportunity for Toliver to get some momentum as he should be matched up against another pro prospect Janoris Jenkins.

  • Linebacker Kelvin Sheppard continues to shine and the added weight he put on in the offseason has not impacted his speed.  Sheppard’s speed will be tested against the Gators as they boast some of the fastest players in the country.  If LSU has any hope of pulling out this win they will be counting on the play and leadership of Sheppard.

Florida

  • Janoris Jenkins had a solid outing last week against Alabama and he looks to build on that this week.  With the poor play of the LSU offense he should have plenty of opportunities to create a turnover or two.  Shutting down Terrence Toliver will be his main task and if he does that he will continue to climb up the draft boards.  You have to love the fact that week in and week out he faces top level competition.

  • Mike Pouncey and his fellow offensive linemen will have a tough challenge this weekend.  The LSU defense is strong against both the run and pass.  I expect the Tigers to bring pressure and do everything in their power to create a turnover in order to help jump start their struggling offense.
