New England Patriots Contributing Rookies
By Editorial Staff
NFL Mocks is going to do a team by team look at what rookies have the potential to contribute during their first season. Every year there are countless rookies that have major and minor impacts. Everyone expects the 1st round picks to make an impact but we hope to point out some other players that may help your favorite team win games.
The Patriots have been stock piling draft pics for the last several years and this draft was no different. The Patriots made 13 selections 3 of them were 2nd round picks.
Devin McCourty: McCourty is more than likely going to open the season as the nickle back but is going to be a staple in the Patriots defensive backfield for years to come. He has added value as a kick return where he looked impressive in the first preseason game.
Rob Gronkowski: Gronkowski is the complete package at the tight end position. He has the size and speed to stretch the defense but he is also a capable blocker. The only concern with Gronkowski is this heath although he has seem to recover nicely from a back injury.
Brandon Spikes: Spikes compiled 8 tackles in his NFL debut and figures to get work as a middle linebacker in the Patriots 3-4 defense. I fully expect to see Spikes getting a lot of special teams action.
Jermaine Cunningham: Cunningham has had a disappointing training camp to date and is suffering from a minor injury. The Patriots were expecting Cunningham to provide a pass rush from the outside linebacker position. The lack of depth at linebacker means that if he can get healthy he had a chance to contribute right away.
Taylor Price: The Patriots have a lot of options at the wide receiver position but it is going to be hard for them to ignore Price’s skills. He would be a good fit in the slot or on the outside.
Aaron Hernandez: Hernandez has all you could want in a pass catching tight end but his lack of blocking skills will limit his time on the field. If he could improve his strength he can earn more playing time.
Zoltan Mesko: Mesko was the first punter selected and is on track to be the Patriots to punter.
