By Editorial Staff
6-3 305lbs Senior
Stats:
2007- 26 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 4 sacks
2008- 38 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack
2009- 42 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 1 forced fumble
Pros:
Add Marvin Austin to the list of top defensive prospects from North Carolina. Austin has ideal size for a defensive tackle and at 305lbs he won’t get pushed around by NFL offensive linemen. Austin couples his size with excellent strength which makes him a dominate run stuffer. He uses his strength to fight off blockers and make plays in the running lanes. He boasts good quickness which allows him to move down the line of scrimmage and make plays all over the field. His lateral quickness is what makes him a special player. When watching film you really notice Austin’s love of the game and passion. He is always going full speed.
Cons:
Right now it seems as though Austin gets by mostly on his athletic ability. Too often I noticed that his first move off of the line of scrimmage was straight up. Austin is going to have to correct this bad habit because he won’t be the strongest or most athletic player when he gets to the NFL. I also have to wonder how much he benefits from being surrounded by talented players. If he is going to be a high draft pick the chances are he will be the guy most offensive key on.
Thoughts:
Austin is one of the top defensive tackle prospects for the 2011 NFL Draft and if he fine tunes his technique the sky is the limit. Right now he sits at #11 on our 2011 NFL Draft Prospect Big Board. His best fit will likely be in the 4-3 defensive scheme.
Projected Round:
Austin can easily crack the top 10 and it’s highly unlikely he drops out of the top 15.
