Everson Griffen’s impact on Ray Edwards
By Editorial Staff
Here at NFLMocks we continue to take a look at the potential impact of different rookies. Today we will discuss the impact Everson Griffen may have on the Vikings defensive line. The Vikings utilized their 4th round pick to select the talented defensive end out of USC. Griffen is a super athletic 6-3 273lbs defensive end. He utilizes his speed and snap anticipation to wreak havoc in the opponents backfield. Griffen has refined his technique and excels with both the speed and bull rush. During his career at USC he showed the ability not only to rush the passer but also to anchor against the run. While Griffen has a lot of physical talent he lacks consistency and a high motor. Due to questions about his overall commitment he slipped to the 4th round. It is now up to the Vikings coaching staff to maximize his talents.
I personally see Griffen as insurance for Ray Edwards. Edwards is coming off of an 8.5 sack season and is looking for a long term contract. Edwards has skipped several offseason workouts with hopes that the team will negotiate a long term deal. However, the selection of Griffen could give the Vikings some leverage in those negotiations. If the Vikings feel that Griffen could develop, they may not offer Edwards the long term deal he is looking for. Griffen is gaining extra practice reps with Edwards skipping workouts. I expect Griffen to continue to work hard and fight his way into the Vikings defensive line rotation. The longer Edward’s holdout continues the more opportunities Griffen will receive. And when Edwards does return he may find himself sharing time with the rookie.
