1. Second round, 51st overall: David Amerson, CB, North Carolina State

Amerson is a big, long, physical cornerback prospect who blew everyone away at the Combine with his measurables. He checked in at 6’1″ 205 pounds and ran a 4.35 second 40 yard dash, and also posted a 35.5-inch vertical jump and 15 bench press reps. Amerson is best known for his sophomore season at NC State when he picked off and absolutely unheard of 13 passes. Of course, those numbers regressed in 2012 to just five interceptions and 12 passes broken up, but obviously teams didn’t shy away from throwing this guy’s way. Amerson has first round ability but he fell to the middle of the second round because of some concerns with his consistency. He had a tendency to get beat on double moves last year, but I think with some work on his technique and discipline he can become a very productive starter in the NFL. I really love this pick for the Redskins, seeing as I thought their secondary was the biggest overall weakness on the team going into this offseason. This is a great way to address a top need.

The Washington Redskins had seven selections in the 2013 NFL Draft and went in with the intentions to draft defensive strong. They upgraded the defensive backs with three selections including two safeties and a cornerback. The other selection they made on defense was a fifth round end. On offense they boostered up the backfield with two running back and grabbed an insurance policy in the second round on tight end Fred Davis.

Round 2, Pick 51 – David Amerson, CB, N.C. State – Amerson is easily a first round talent that got eaten up his last year at N.C. State and his stock fell for it. He has the size, strength and natural ability to be a starting corner in the NFL. He is extremely agressive when jumping routes, which allows him to intercept the ball often on shorter routes. He also attacks the run very agressively. He has extremely good ball skills which help him pick off passes that are off target, or when a quarterback tries to squeeze a ball between zones. He isn’t afraid to hit and can close gaps very quickly. He is also very good at wrap up tackles. His aggresive nature allows him to be beat deep and on double moves. He also needs more work in man coverage, but given his size and athleticism, I wouldn’t consider this a problem.

David Amerson Grade – A

Round 3, Pick 85 – Jordan Reed, TE, Florida – Reed’s strength is his receiving game. He can line up just about anywhere in the formation as well. He knows when to use his hands to catch the ball and when to let it get into his body during tight coverage. He is a very smooth runner, and is great with the ball in his hands. He can consistently make defenders miss and fight for yardage when needed. Reed needs to become a more consistent blocker. At times he shows that he can do it, but struggles in other cases. He must become better at blocking the second level and finishing plays instead of watching the ball carrier once he is passed him. At the moment, his route tree is quite small and will need to grow before he makes a huge impact on games.

Jordan Reed Grade – C+

Round 4, Pick 119, Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno St. – Thomas is a very physical defender. He attacks the run and is doesn’t miss many tackles. He has good ball skills and can catch with his hands. He is quick enough to cover tight ends and some receivers. He is aggressive when undercutting routes and is very comfortable with blitzing off the edge. Thomas’s aggressive play allows him to get beat on occasion during play action and deep routes. He also needs to work better at getting off of receiver blocks.

Phillip Thomas Grade – B+

Round 5, Pick 154 – Chris Thompson, RB, Florida St.- Thompson is a big play waiting to happen. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and get up the field quick. When in open space, Thompson knows how to make defenders consistently miss. He is a decisive runner and sets up his blocks very well. He give good effort in pass protection, as well. Chris Thompson is liable to get injured because of his small frame. He is only a change of pace back, not a three down player. He goes down on first contact and needs some space before he can make his own moves.

Chris Thompson Grade – D+

Round 5, Pick 162 – Brandon Jenkins, DE, Florida St. – Along with very good production in the SEC, Jenkins is very quick with long strides. He turn the corner when rushing the quarterback, but also has enough power to take blocks head on in the run game. He doesn’t hustle as much as needed. Jenkins also doesn’t use an aresnal of moves, which allows tackles to push him out of the play. He needs to break down in open space to get more of a sure tackle.

Brandon Jenkins Grade – B+

Round 6, Pick 191 – Bacarri Rambo, S, Georgia – Rambo is a tough kid. He is big enough and quick enough to fill holes in the run game. He uses cut tackling to his advantage. He reads the routes and quarterbacks eyes very well and has strong hands that allow him to intercept 50/50 balls. He needs to work on taking better angles to the ball and getting off receiver blocks. He also needs to clean up his off the field issues.

Bacarri Rambo Grade – B

Round 7, Pick 228 – Jawan Jamison, RB, Rutgers – Jamison is a small scat back that can catch the ball out of the backfield. He was productive at Rutgers, even when playing through an ankle injury. He won’t be an every down back, but can bring some change of pace.

Jawan Jamison Grade – C-

The Washington Redskins could not have had a worse finish to the 2012 season. On the optimistic side of things, they have Robert Griffin III on the roster, and he has revitalized the franchise. On the other hand, RG3 may not be back until 2014, the Redskins blew a 14-0 lead in their playoff game, and they don’t have a first round pick in the draft.

The good news is, Washington seemed to plan for an RG3 injury. My best guess is that the Redskins will go into the offseason with Kirk Cousins planning on being the starting quarterback next year, a role he excelled in as a rookie. Cousins was able to come in at times and give the Redskins a spark in place of the injured Griffin, and I think he’ll be a good one year stop-gap.

Still, this has got to be one of the more unnerving offseasons for Redskins fans in recent memory. Here are my top needs for this team, in no particular order.

1. Cornerback

The only cornerback the Redskins have on their roster that they drafted is last year’s seventh round pick Richard Crawford, who is a backup. Cedric Griffin is a free agent and while DeAngelo Hall and Josh Wilson are bigger names, the Redskins were 30th in the league against the pass. This could very well be a position the Redskins look to with their first selection.

2. Tight End

Fred Davis and Chris Cooley are free agents, and as we saw this last season, the tight end position is very important for the Redskins. They got a surprisingly good season out of Logan Paulsen, who was the team leader among tight end in receiving. I think this position could be significantly upgraded unless the Redskins decide to keep all their players in-house.

3. Offensive Line

Starters Kory Lichtensteiger and Jamaal Brown (LG and RT respectively) are both free agents. The backups at right tackle are Tyler Polumbus and Jordan Black, who are also both free agents. The Redskins have a couple of young later round picks waiting in the wings in Maurice Hurt (7th rd, 2011) and Tom Compton (6th rd, 2012), but will the Redskins rely upon their development? That remains to be seen.

4. Backup RB

Alfred Morris may have been the steal of the 2012 NFL Draft. He was selected in the sixth round out of Florida Atlantic, and was second in the NFL in rushing in 2012. I would hesitate to believe he’s going to carry this team like that again next year, and the Redskins need a more dynamic playmaker to run along with him in their exciting offense. This draft is full of running backs, so the Redskins should take advantage and grab a talented guy in the middle rounds.

5. Safety

Safety is a pretty big need for the Redskins. Madieu Williams is a free agent and Brandon Meriweather is a stop-gap. The Redskins have some late round picks they are developing at the position, but this has become a position of clear need for the NFL’s 30th ranked pass defense. They were kind of a revolving door at this position last season.

6. Linebacker

London Fletcher is a beast, but he’s not getting any younger. Perry Riley had a great season in 2012, but the Redskins also have three unrestricted free agents at the linebacker position in Chris Wilson, Lorenzo Alexander, and Bryan Kehl. The Redskins have no pass rush depth beyond Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo.

Robert Griffin III beat out Andrew Luck for the Heisman Trophy in 2011/2012, and in 2012/13, he beat him out for the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year.

Griffin was one of the most exciting players in the NFL as a rookie before tearing up his knee in the playoffs, leading the Redskins to an NFC East title and taking them from being one of the worst teams in the league to one of the most promising. He beat out not only Andrew Luck but Seattle’s Russell Wilson.

The former Heisman winner out of Baylor was selected second in the 2012 NFL Draft, and came in with pretty high expectations. He lived up to those expectations by passing for 3,200 yards with 20 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Griffin also ran for 815 yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie campaign.

Defensive Rookie of the Year

Luke Kuechly of the Carolina Panthers was also named AP Defensive Rookie of the Year Saturday night. Kuechly had 164 tackles and two interceptions in his first year for the Panthers after a collegiate career where he was one of the most productive tacklers in college football history.

Both Griffin III and Kuechly entered the 2012 NFL Draft as underclassmen, and were top 10 picks.

What a great NFL Sunday, wasn’t it? There is so much to touch on, but how about my picks from this weekend? Not so good, thus far. I picked New York on Wednesday night, so my current “pick ‘em” record sits at 8-6 this week, but I’m okay with that. How many people thought the Niners would go into Green Bay and get a big victory? I wasn’t on board that train, but a great win by the Niners nonetheless.

When you talk about rookies, this weekend was probably as big a weekend as any the NFL has seen. Five rookie starting quarterbacks took the field on Sunday for their respective teams, a record and something this league has never seen before. The clear-cut week one winner for top rookie was Washington’s Robert Griffin III, who went into a hostile environment in New Orleans, and came out with not only a victory, but one of the highest quarterback ratings among quarterbacks in the league at 139.9.

Griffin looked poised, calm, and showed those playmaking skills he displayed in his Heisman Trophy campaign last year at Baylor. He completed 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns, including an 88 yard strike to Pierre Garcon on his first pass. Griffin wasn’t the only rookie in the Redskins’ backfield that showed promise, though. Rookie tailback Alfred Morris came out and rushed for 96 yards, carrying the ball 28 times and scoring two key touchdowns for Washington. Morris and Griffin combined for 138 rushing yards, and four total touchdowns.

The Redskins were able to shock the Saints, and Griffin III was really the only rookie quarterback who looked great on Sunday. Top overall pick Andrew Luck was responsible for four turnovers against the Chicago Bears, and the Colts wound up losing 41-21 despite starting the game with a pick-six and a 7-0 lead. On the other sideline there, Jay Cutler and the Bears looked scary good offensively, and the defense was making plays as usual.

Luck was able to do some great things yesterday, but the Bears got the best of him and he was clearly flustered at times.

Russell Wilson looked okay for the Seahawks, who lost a close one to the Arizona Cardinals on a fourth down play that fell just short for Seattle. The bigger story here was that Kevin Kolb came in after John Skelton suffered an injury, and he played really well. Kolb completed six of his eight passes including the game winner for the Cardinals.

Elsewhere for rookie quarterbacks, Brandon Weeden and Ryan Tannehill looked pretty bad. They made some nice plays, but they seemed to be few and far in between. Those guys clearly have the worst supporting casts among the other rookie QBs, but they still looked well-behind in their development. Brandon Weeden finished with a quarterback rating of just over five, and a large reason why was because he completed only 12 passes and had four interceptions. Weeden also had two fumbles on the day.

Tannehill fared a little bit better, but is still searching for his first touchdown pass after throwing three interceptions and fumbling once. He completed 20 passes and was able to hit some guys for big plays, but sadly the only legitimate threat offensively for the Dolphins right now is Reggie Bush, and they need someone else to emerge for Tannehill to develop properly.

The Andrew Luck vs. Robert Griffin III battle was pretty slow-going for about the entire length of a quarter, and to be honest, they had their thunder stolen by another rookie on the field.

Rookie tailback Alfred Morris, a sixth round pick by the Redskins out of Florida Atlantic continued his impressive pre-season with a 14 carry, 107 yard performance. Morris has really opened eyes for the Redskins this offseason, and after being selected in the sixth round has worked his way into the starting lineup with injuries to Roy Helu Jr. and Evan Royster.

To be completely frank, it seems as though Morris is the best overall back the Redskins have, unless Tim Hightower is healthy. We all know how much Mike Shanahan loves to rotate running backs in and out of his flawless zone running scheme, but it may be time to stick with a guy and get out of the logjam situations. My opinion is that Morris has proven to be durable, productive, and versatile enough that he should be the starter.

As for the two rookie quarterbacks everyone is talking about, I think both guys did some things well. Robert Griffin III tried to air it out on a few different occasions, and he was off the mark via the overthrow each time. One area the Redskins really struggled last year was connecting on big plays down the field, and Griffin can certainly rectify that problem if they can get his accuracy in check.

Andrew Luck was pretty limited early on to quick, short passes, but his first and only touchdown throw was a beauty. It was a very nice route run by fellow rookie T.Y. Hilton, who looked like he was running a quick out and then turned upfield and ran as fast as he could. Luck stepped into his pass and hit Hilton right where he needed to for six. It capped off a very nice drive for the Colts, who are having some issues along their offensive line. Luck was sacked a few too many times.

Griffin III showed good ability to bounce back after a sluggish start, leading a couple of touchdown drives including one that was capped off by a touchdown pass to Santana Moss.

The quarterback who played the best on this day was backup Rex Grossman, who completed all eight of his passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns. The ‘Skins could have used that kind of production out of him last year, but at least he’s proving he can at least still be a capable backup after Kirk Cousins dominated last week’s game against the Chicago Bears.

As far as pre-season games go, this one was pretty entertaining.

I was watching three of the pre-season games intently through the first half of each of them and here are some quick thoughts about these games.

Keep in mind this is only pre-season.

Packers-Chargers

Packers-

The Packers do not look sharp yet. Fumbles, miscues, poor blocking. I think the poor blocking is what sticks out the most–and this could be an issue that has the offense take a step back in 2012 (with how proficient they were last year it’d be hard to imagine they replicate that same kind of success).

Nick Perry had his first sack, though he also tagged on a taunting penalty. Jon Gruden didn’t know what he did to get the penalty, it looked to me like he pushed Rivers’ head down when he was getting up.

James Starks had a rough outing and people will be clamoring for a different running back–is Alex Green that guy?

Chargers

Melvin Ingram absolutely abused anyone who was put in front of him in tonight’s game. He’s athletic and has terrific hustle. The knock on Ingram, of course, was his arm length and whether or not he had a true position. His position is helping out an anemic pass rush and so far he’s looking really good.

The Chargers were also very sloppy in today’s game. Will they ever be a crisp, well run team under Norv Turner? It seems not (obviously not making this conclusion from just tonight’s game). But bad mistakes are becoming a trademark of the Chargers.

Vincent Brown-I will draft you in my fantasy league. I expect a big year from him in 2012.

Steelers-Eagles

Steelers

Did we learn anything about the Steelers from this game? I’m not sure. Mike Adams left the game with an injury. The Oline had trouble containing the terrific Eagles defensive line. And their defense is top notch. Like I said, in the first half not much was gathered about the Steelers.

Eagles

There were some interesting developments.

Mychal Kendricks is fast. He doe snot always make the right decision, but he’s very athletic and all over the field.

The Eagles punting game looks like it might be very scary…Chas Henry and Matt Mcbriar both struggled.

Mike Kafka looked awful tonight, there was a point in the game where Michael Vick hit his hand on the helmet of Jason Kelce (I believe) and had to leave the game. Kafka came in and made bad decisions and bad throws all over the field. If Vick gets hurt, the Eagles are in trouble (that can be said about nearly all starting quarterbacks, but few have Vick’s injury history).

The Eagles like fast little Wide Receivers. Johnson is the next wave of him. He had 4 receptions for 85 yards, and one 70 yard touchdown.

Jaiquawn Jarrett played poorly.
I wondered who would be the Eagles number two back and so far it definitely looks like Dion Lewis will win that spot. (But keep in mind that this is very early still)

Bills vs Redskins

Everyone was excited to see rookie Cornerback Stephon Gilmore’s first game…Must have been all the hoopla.

Redskins

Robert Griffin III-showed some poise and didn’t make any really bad decisions. He went through his progressions pretty well and completed 4 passes in six attempts for 70 yards. He still has to improve his consistency in his foot work and his release and he’ll have to stay healthy, but so far a nice start for the talented rookie.

The Niles Paul TE experiment is still in it’s infancy and Paul has a long ways to go. It’s an intriguing possibility.

Bad Rex Grossman showed up tonight, but who cares.

Really the story beings and ends here with RGIII and his solid debut.
Bills

Tyler Thigpen got first crack at securing the backup quarterback spot….and looked awful.

The WR position is still very much up in the air as to how everyone will be slotted behind Stevie Johnson.

The Bills hope that T.J. Graham can be the deep threat on this team, and if not this offense isn’t diverse enough in the passing game to consistently put up points. Slants, slants, slant. Tashard Choice did not doing anything tonight to inspire confidence that last year’s lack luster performances are a thing of the past.

The Bills pass rush did not overwhelm the Redskins offensive line this game. Doesn’t mean they won’t be great in 2012, but early on not dominant on the field-mostly just solid.

Add in your thoughts about any of these games (or others) in the comment section.

So much is made of Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts because of his NFL readiness, his intelligence, and his overall football ability, but you don’t hear a lot of the same about Robert Griffin III, even though he almost graded out just as high on my board coming out.

Maybe around Redskins camp, there is more of a buzz surrounding him, but I’m impressed by the fact that RG3 is making such a seamless transition to leading his new team. A team full of veteran receivers, which Griffin III says he will likely be working with in between minicamp and training camp this offseason.

“We’re all going to get together. We haven’t planned it yet, but we are going to get together and throw. It’s important for us to be successful as a team, and working together like that is what you have to do. It’s not to a massive scale or anything, but I’ve talked to a couple of the receivers to try to see if we can hook up and throw together just to stay in tune. But it’s not official yet.”

Griffin also talked about knowing when to slide and potentially being afraid of taking too many hits as a quarterback who can run.

“One thing I won’t do is play with fear. You have to play fearless. That doesn’t mean I’m going to go try and run over linebackers and safeties, but I’ll be smart. If I need to slide, I’ll slide. If I need to run out of bounds, I’ll run out of bounds. But if it’s third-and-3 and a crucial point in the game, don’t expect me to be sliding. If it’s at the end of the game, I won’t slide. Don’t expect that. But if it’s early in the game, I don’t have a problem with it. It’s not a shot at my manhood. I’ve slid before. I’ve run out of bounds before too. I’ve been laid into out of bounds before too. That’s 15 yards. Keep them coming.”

I can’t wait to see RG3 playing this season, and while there will be some bumps and bruises along the way, the Redskins and most fans will have high hopes for this year and rightfully so.

Every year in the N.F.L. there are young players who, finally comfortable with their playbooks and the speed of the game-have big years that launch careers. Last year players like Jason Pierre Paul, Geno Atkins, NaVorro Bowman, Pat Angerer, had their best years and justified the faith their teams had in them when they made them high draft picks. Other players like LaDarius Webb, Brandon Bowner, and Victor Cruz showed that breakout players can come from anywhere.

Throughout the summer I’ll highlight some players I believe are poised for big seasons in 2012 whether it is because I really liked what I saw from them in college or they flashed brilliance last year. The first player I highlighted was San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Brown.

Today I’ll dip back into the WR well and pull up Leonard Hankerson the Redskins 2nd round pick in the 2011 N.F.L. draft. Leonard Hankerson is a big bodied WR who has a good work ethic. With the first pick highlighted Hankerson in this scouting report the summary which I’ll post here.

Leonard Hankerson has shown great discipline and work ethic during his tenure at Miami. He was highly touted out of high school, and things didn’t start off so well in college. He had a difficult time focusing, often dropping easy balls. It took him some time to adjust to the college game. He eventually buckled down and worked his butt off to become one of the top receivers in the nation in 2010. Hankerson has the size, hands, and big play ability to be a solid receiver in the NFL. At his size, he is very versatile. He has experience playing outside the hashes and in the slot. With his huge frame, he has proven to be quite dangerous in the slot. He knows how to sit in empty zones and work the seams, similar to Saints receiver, Marques Colston. The team that drafts him can line him up all over the field to create mismatches. Hankerson isn’t in the same class as AJ Green and Julio Jones, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a quality receiver. With further development, he can become a bona fide number one receiver. Right now, he is a solid number two. Look for Hankerson to come off the board in round two.

Like many young players 2011 was a weird year because there was really no off-season for rookies and it took awhile for them to learn their play books and adjust (unless they were insane athletes like Cam Newton, Julio Jones, and Aldon Smith), but with a full off-season he should be helped. Hankerson did not put up big numbers last year only 13 receptions for 163 yards, and he started the season slowly, but really came on in the middle of the year. Just when he hit his stride with a breakout performance against the Dolphins (8 receptions and a 163 yards) Hankerson hurt his hip and was sent to the I.R.

I like Hankeron’s ability to stretch the field a bit, and create mismatches with his size in the intermediate passing game. Hankerson will have to show that he’s learned some techniques to help him separate more because he will not do that routinely with his average athleticism. I also like Hankerson’s chance to break out this year because his quarterback is now much more talented than last year even if RGIII does not have the same experience as Grossman he should be an immediate upgrade. I also think that the Redskins going out and signing Pierre Garcon will take pressure off Leonard Hankerson. The Redskins also added Josh Morgan, but I expect Hankerson to beat out Morgan and win the #2 WR spot.

Leonard Hankerson is a player to watch out for in 2012, and while I do not think a Victor Cruz like year is coming, I can see a year where he goes for 900 yards and 6 or 7 touchdowns and establishes himself as a player to worry about in the future. and a true future #1 WR

Leading up to the draft there was some speculation that Robert Griffin III could be lost on the N.F.L. level because the coaches made a lot of the decisions for him at the sideline. Today that issue was settled by his former teammate WR Kendall Wright.

“At Baylor we didn’t huddle. Everything we did was coming off of signals and off the sideline,” Wright said. “We didn’t huddle at Baylor and we didn’t have a playbook. If we had a new play or something, we’d just draw it and go out there and run it.”

Plays had names, but the signals from the sideline were the cue, not the code word name of the play. Overall, Wright estimates that he memorized about 300 plays by the time the variations to the plays were counted in.

Adapting to a playbook will be a different expeirnece for both Wright and RGIII, but it should not be a big deal. Wright also said that although the team did not have a playbook they had a lot of plays they had to know.

We had a lot of plays. We just didn’t have a playbook. Coach Briles is a very smart man,” Wright said. “It was the same system. We were in that system for four years. It’s kind of a different kind of learning deal. We’d see it visually and we’d just go run it. It just sticks with us when we keep running it a lot.

Whether or not this will be an issue for Wright and Griffin III moving forward will be interesting. Learning a new team playbook is a daunting task for any rookie–and I personally don’t think it will be a major hindrance for either player. The rookies will have different difficulties. Wright will have to develop chemistry with two different quarterbacks trying to win the starting job in Jake Locker and Matt Hasselbeck–and these are players that have very different strengths and weaknesses. Griffin III on the other hand will be going to perhaps the best division in the league in terms of pass rush–the Giants and Eagles routinely finish in the top 10 in sacks and the Cowboys have the menacing DeMarcus Ware.
