St. Louis Rams off Season Check List

2011 Outcome (2-14)

The Rams were supposed to be taking a step forward this season. Bradford would be in year 2. Josh McDaniel’s was going to improve the offense. The OL would be strength and the defense would be a solid entity with a young promising HC leading it. Well Bradford regressed, McDaniels is showing to be a franchise destroyer, the OL was injured and under preformed, and the defense was a sieve. Now the Rams are starting over…again and are unsure if Bradford is Joey Harrington 2.0; Very talented but not the leader a franchise quarterback needs to be.

Coach Seat Temperature

The Rams are cleaning house with their GM and their coaching staff. This is wise since the drafts and FA have not gone well recently. It is essential the Rams get a good, young GM to run their franchise, look at what the Lions have done with Mayhew running the team. I hear Gene Smith and plenty of young and up and coming men taking the front running as well as Jeff Fischer’s name for HC. I think that’s a solid plan.

The 2012 NFL season is winding down and the playoff picture is becoming clearer every week. Last week I discussed the AFC/NFC South picture. This week we will discuss the improving AFC/NFC West conference playoff picture. We will go into remaining schedules and predictions.

AFC West

Kansas City Chiefs: The NFL can certainly change quickly. The Chiefs were the AFC West 2010 Champs. In 2011, injuries have decimated this team and now their HC Todd Haley was recently fired. I think Haley is a good OC, but not a good HC. He lacks the ability to remain consistent in his day to day approach. Injuries were a huge detriment this season with season ending injuries to Matt Cassell, Jamal Charles, Tony Moeaki, and Eric Berry. That is a lot of talent on the IR. Currently at 5-8 they are not mathematically out of the playoffs but they are not going to make it in this year. They play the Packers and the Raiders at home before going to enver. At best the Chiefs will finish 6-10 and a good chance of improving next year.

One of my favorite bloggers is 3k over at turfshowtimes.com a St. Louis Rams blog. 3k has a great sense of humor, but also gives honest and insightful evaluations. 3k is also a big draft guy who does excellent work for mocking the draft from time to time. He took some time out his schedule to answer a few questions about the Rams and the N.F.L. draft.

1) Is Spags job safe?

In a word, no. You can’t lose as many games as the Rams have during his tenure and remain safe forever. And given this is year three (not to mention this was a 7-win team a year ago), his seat is red hot.

2). They say it takes three years to evaluate a draft class…How is the 2009 draft class looking?

Not great, but the two hits (James Laurinaitis and Bradley Fletcher) were solid. One of the biggest issues with GM Billy Devaney’s time in St. Louis has been his inability to unearth any gems in rounds 4-7; the ’09 draft was a prime example. Jason Smith is teetering on falling off the bust cliff after a disappointing season that ended with a concussion a few weeks back. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rams cut ties with him this offseason. And if Bradley Fletcher can’t rehab fully from a second knee injury, this turns into a draft that landed a sole long-term player, albeit a fantastic one.

Players

Alex Smith: Lets get one thing straight; he is not setting the world on fire and will probably still give way to Colin Kaepernick in a year or two. That being said he is a huge reason the 49ers are 6-1. Jim Harbaugh is an amazing coach. He has Alex Smith managing games and being efficient. Alex Smith is completing 63% of his passes, throwing for only 1267 yards but 11.01 yards per completion, and has thrown 9 TD’s to 2 int’s. With these efficient numbers the question is will it last? Yes, though mostly to the coaching staff, the dominate run game, and a dominate defense. Alex Smith finally gets some redemption. Will last this season.

Whatever there is to be done, you can bet Green Bay has seen it, and Rodgers has to be licking his chops at the thought of going up against a weak St. Louis secondary.

The 0-1 New York Giants take on the 0-1 St. Louis Rams tonight in New York in a game of playoff hopeful teams battling to not start the season 0-2. This team will feature musical score from M*A*S*H as both teams will trout out backups at key positions on both sides of the football. The Rams will likely be without two of their top offensive weapons in Steven Jackson (who is listed as questionable) and Danny Amendola (doubtful and it’d be a miracle if he played tonight). Which is unfortunately for the Rams because the Giants are hurting on defense where they are without Terrell Thomas (out for season), Osi Umeminyora (knee), first round pick Prince Amukamara (broken foot). The Giants will also be without starting tight end Travis Beckum .

Who is just healthy enough to survive tonight in Jersey?

And what should you be watching for. Well, here at NFLMocks we like to concentrate on the young guys.

Roger Saffold vs Jason Pierre Paul

Tonight Jason Pierre Paul will get the start at RDE with the Osi Umeinyora injury. It’s also possible that Justin Tuck misses a second straight game (neck) He’ll be lined up vs the second year LT out of Indiana, Roger Saffold. Both the Rams and Giants think they have future probowlers (possible All pro) players in Paul and Saffold. Last week. Jason Pierre Paul was dynamite last week vs Trent Williams especially in the second half. After a strong second half of last year, Paul looks ready to explode. He has long arms, is very athletic, good size, and never stops hustling. Last week Paul had 2 sacks, and a forced fumble in the second half. He also had about 3 Tackles for loss in the game (can’t find the exact stat). Big matchup tonight for two second year players.

The power rankings below are strictly based off of week one performances. These power rankings should look a lot different once we move later into the season.

Here are the NFL power rankings for week 1:

32 Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs deserve to be the worst team on every single power ranking that comes out today. They got shut down by one of the worst teams in the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The Chiefs offense made the Bills defense looked like the Ravens and the Chiefs defense made the Bills offense look like the Packers. Maybe it’s just the Bills are getting better, but it’s still no excuse for the horrible loss they suffered against them.

31. Indianapolis Colts

You can’t blame Kerry Collins two fumbles for the loss against the Houston Texans on Sunday. More of the loss should be put on the running game and rush defense. They ran the ball for only 64 yards and allowed a player that goes by the name of Ben Tate, not Arian Foster, run for 116 yards and a touchdown.
