Spiller Could Be A Player Worth Hanging onto Keeper Leagues

This is my thoughts on potential keepers for the running back position for your keeper league.

CJ Spiller: Pay Close attention to what the Bills are planning to do for next season. Before Fred Jackson’s injury Spiller rarely saw the field. Once he had season ending surgery Spiller exploded onto the seen. If Spiller is to be the starter next season you can expect 1600 yards total offense and 10-12 TD’s.

Maurice Jones Drew: This guy is immune to playing on a bad team. MJD is always a lock for over 1200 yards rushing, 300 yards receiving, and 6+ TD’s. Keep him and feel comfortable for one more season.

Chris Johnson: It is too risky to not keep this guy. I think the Titans will go out of their way to improve the interior OL this offseason. I do not like the CJ2K’s work ethic but his talent is too high for you to drop him.

Ray Rice: Now that Rice is seeing red zone touches he is an automatic keep. You can expect similar numbers for the next 3-5 years. He might be the best PPR running back in the league.

Marshawn Lynch: No one had more of an impact during the second half of the season than Lynch. Most people are considering him a lock to keep….not so fast my friends. Once Lynch gets his contract I do not expect similar numbers. Keep him at your own risk. His lack of receptions is alarming as well.

Transactions:

This week the Tennessee Titans have a bye week so I was stuck without a kicker. Normally I wouldn’t care but after losing last week I do not want to give up points, also Rob Bironas has not done much. I picked up Dallas Cowboy kicker Dan Bailey and dropped Rob Bironas. Bailey has scored more points than Bironas, plays on a better offense, and has had his bye week already. I am still looking for RB depth but have been slightly encouraged by Marshawn Lynch’s production the past two weeks. I am alarmed to see Ben Tate being injured and Steven Ridley losing touches to BJG. I can not afford any injuries to Ray Rice or Darren McFadden.

Starters

Matthew Stafford is the reason for my success. He has a tough matchup versus the 49ers this week. Staffordis playing at home and will get plenty of action since the running game will likely be ineffective. I think the 49ers have a good pass rush but their secondary has not been tested by this kind of passing attack yet. I think a moderately effective game with the likes of 240-250 yards and 2 touchdowns is a reasonable expectation.

Ray Rice and Darren McFadden are the backbone of my team. Rice and McFadden will give me a chance to win every week. Rice is back from the bye but faces a tough Houston Texan defense. The Texans stuffed Darren McFadden last week and I hope they do not do the same to Rice. Houston Texans are giving up the 28th most fantasy points to RB’s so I cannot expect much from Rice. 50-60 yards rushing and I am not expecting a touchdown. I am praying he takes over in the passing game.

Points are also awarded for individual return touchdowns (so think DeSean Jackson gets a boost here).

It’s a 12 team league. The big thing that immediately stands out to me is that quarterbacks get 6 points per passing touchdowns which makes them very valuable and probably more important than running backs. My plan heading into the draft (assuming I’m picking like 8th like I usually do) is to grab the best WR/RB available and then on the way back through grab one of the four elite fantasy (emphasis on fantasy) quarterbacks (Rodgers, Brees, Vick, Manning), and if not maybe Phillip Rivers. Also to note is that the league is a keeper league and the position slots are: 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 Flex, 1 defense, 1 Kicker. 6 Bench.

I have the first pick in the draft.

Jeez. Not the pick I wanted.

In my last fantasy draft I had the fourth (or maybe fifth pick) and nabbed Chris Johnson ahead of Arian Foster, even though I was worried about that pick.

1st round, 1st pick overall.

My first fantasy football draft went down last Friday, seeing as I talk all day long about what readers should with their team; I thought it might be fun to show how I go about a fantasy Draft. This league is 12 teams, so it’s a moderate size league. It is a keeper league (with this being year 1) and it is a PPR league, and we used the yahoo standard QB, 2RB, 3WR, RB/WR, TE, D/ST, K lineup.

Going into the draft, I am picking eight overall, which is an okay spot. I do not think this is a year filled with elite talent, rather a year of depth. Their will be plenty of solid players at 8…though truth be told I wish I was drafting a few picks later. I love the turnaround double picks, though 8 will do.

This is a PPR league which also gives bonuses for 40+ yard Touchdowns to both RB, WR, TE, and QB’s. We also give more points to QB’s than normal. Every 25 yards instead of 40 and passing TD’s are the same as other TD’s. My strategy early on is to wait to be one of the last teams to take a quarterback since there are an alarming number of quarterbacks who are capable of elite numbers. I have noticed there are very few RB’s I really like and picking 8th and 17th would give me the opportunity to pull out two RB’s capable of stable points. WR depth is solid so I can at least wait till round 3.

With the 8th pick in the draft, I selected the best running back possible in this league format: Ray Rice. I was able to take a young RB who has little competition for carries and is a beast in receptions. Rice does not score a ton of long TD’s but he has stable yards, stable receptions, and I am predicting an increase of TD’s. I had Rice as the 3rd best player behind Foster and Peterson. I am very happy.

Alright everyone, the lockout should be over today, or at the very worst Monday. Fantasy drafts will be starting all over the world once we all know where free agents end up. With that being said, I think this is the year to draft back to back RB’s in the first and second rounds.

The reason for this is simple. The RB depth this year is really, really bad, while the WR depth seems to be the deepest I have seen in a long time.

For example, in a resent 12 team draft I took part in having the 6th pick (was not a mock draft). I was able to get Ray Rice in the first round, then draft Steven Jackson in the Second. I then grabbed a QB in the third, and was still able to get Brandon Marshall and Wes Welker with my 4th and 5th round selections. The WR position is deep my friends, very deep.

Listen, more and more WR’s emerge every year. I always find a WR that pops up on the waiver wire. While it seems the days of finding a work horse back on the waiver waire are all but dead (there was Peyton Hillis last year). More and more teams are using the running back by committee. I have looked up and down, left and right for true number one backs in the NFL. They really don’t exist anymore.

These are the only RB’s that do not have a threat for the hated RBBC.
