During the off-season the Baltimore Ravens traded for Lee Evans to give them a big play threat who could stretch the field and complement their young talented tight ends and Anquan Boldin. But today with Evans out, second round pick Torrey Smith put on a show. Each week I do a rookie hot list (from week 2) that takes a look at the performances around the league by rookies and Smith will definitely have to make a debut tonight.

The Ravens huge win also puts me three and 0 in my locks of the week this season vs the spread. Now, the rest of my picks aren’t doing as well, but I’ll take doing well in at least one area. In a day the Ravens obliterated the Rams, the Steelers are struggling to beat the Peyton Manning-less Colts in Indianapolis.

Even with his huge performance I”m not sure I’d recommend running to the waive wire to grab him. Lee Evans will eventually be back and the Rams are absolutely devestated in the secondary. It won’t be that easy every week.

Other quick thoughts around the league.

OL-Matt Birk is old, Michael Oher wasn’t as good as they were last year and Jared Gaither has back troubles which could be bad news (Shawn Andrews for example). I expect them to draft OL early in the draft.

WR-They have some age at the WR position. They would have an excellent group of WR four years ago with T.J. WhosYourMomma, Anquan Boldin, and Derrick Mason, but now they need to infuse some talent and youth into the WR corps.

OLB-Jarrett Johnson had 1.5 sacks last year starting 16 games. Terrell Suggs is a baller, but they need someone to complement him and be the future replacement for him. Sergio Kindle might be that player, but he has injury concerns and last year got hurt at home.

The Denver Broncos are a team going through a pretty big transition as the leadership and hierarchy of the team and front office has changed. McDaniels is out which opened up spots of power in the GM and head coaching positions. To fill these, owner Pat Bowlen tapped former quarterback and Bronco great John Elway to run the day to day operations of the team. Elway gave GM Brian Xanders more power in making personnel moves that were limited under Josh McDaniels. Earlier this week, Elway hired former Carolina head coach John Fox, who turned around a franchise in North Carolina from 1-15 to the Super Bowl in two years. Why is this all important? Because the Broncos are coming off a 4-12 season and have a high draft pick to start their new journey towards the big game.

There are bound to be lots of little changes in how decisions are made on all levels of the organization, but we are going to attempt to pinpoint the direction they may head by looking at the past of the guys making the ultimate decisions. A lot has been made on John Elway‘s comments on Denver QB Tim Tebow, but like most things concerning Tebow, they were blown out of proportion by fans. Elway continued later in the quoted story (and tweets) to say how much he does like Tim and hopes he can mature in the quarterback for the Broncos. What could possibly make this more of a non story is this quote from Elway when he was being courted for the position he now holds:

One of the most important factors when preparing for the NFL Draft is knowing each and every NFL team. NFL Mocks keeps a very close eye on each team and will bring you an updated needs assessment at the end of each month. These needs will help as we prepare to make predictions for the 2011 NFL Draft. Continue to check out our team needs page to find the most recent assessments. Also after looking at the team needs move on over to the Big Board and see what prospects might fit your teams need.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens have held up quite well for what was considered a weak secondary coming into the season. They may only have 3 INTs, but they are the 3rd ranked passing defense in the league. The offense though, has let them down in their losses this season. In fact, after losing to New England this past weekend, both the Patriots and the Texans would hold the tiebreakers over Baltimore (Pats won heads up and Texans have the better conference record) in the wild card. This would leave the Ravens picking about 20th and there could be some offensive options to potentially make the offense as dangerous as the defense. The offense could beef up the talent on the line and officially replace Jared Gaither with OT Anthony Castonzo. This is also a spot where I think the value for Mark Ingram starts. Ingram could team up with Ray Rice and become a fearsome attack to help out Flacco and the passing game. DE/OLB Ryan Kerrigan seems like a Baltimore kind of player (tough and strong) and has some value here as well.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns are a little better than most would have given them credit before the season, having been competitive in just about every game so far this season. The wins haven’t started coming yet, but if they can get some more play making talent on either side of the ball it would go a long way. Cleveland would have a top 5 pick at this point and that is usually a good place to get a play maker. Matching CB Joe Haden with CB Patrick Peterson seems like a no brainer. Colt McCoy actually looked alright against the Steelers #1 ranked defense. He completed 70% of his passes on 33 attempts. What was a little surprising was how more often Peyton Hillis was targeted than wide receivers in general. Hillis had seven targets, while the wide receiving group combined for 11. 14 went to tight ends and one to the fullback, in case you were wondering, but that is a lot of targets going to a running back and the expense of going down field. WR A.J. Green as might Julio Jones would be huge upgrades to their receiver core. If they are all gone, D-lineman Marcel Darceus could help out a lagging front seven.
