The playoffs are now upon us in what has turned out to be a crazy season. I ended up with a winning record picking all the games in the league through the first 15 weeks (with weeks 16 and 17 during the holidays I wasn’t able to find the time to get those done). So I look forward to seeing if I can continue that through the playoffs.

This year is another year in which there is a large turnover in the playoff teams. Newcomers this year are aplenty. The Texans, Bengals, Lions, Giants, and Broncos are all in the playoffs for the first time since at least 2008 (Giants) or much longer (like the Lions). The 49ers are also a new addition, but won’t play this weekend.

Here are the opening lines for this weeks games.

Date & Time Favorite Spread Underdog
1/7 4:30 ET At Houston -3 Cincinnati
1/7 8:00 ET At New Orleans -10.5 Detroit
1/8 1:00 ET At NY Giants -3 Atlanta
1/8 4:30 ET Pittsburgh -8 At Denver

Bengals (+3) at Houston

The Houston Texans have managed to cling on for dear life to get into the playoffs after they lost their quarterback for the season, and their second string quarterback for the season as well. They came out and played a good game against the Titans on Sunday, in a loss. The Bengals on the other hand have had a bit of an up and down season, but made it to the playoffs on the last day. Both teams will be starting rookie quarterbacks this weekend.

Right now the Bengals are 3 point underdogs, but I think they can win this game outright. I’ll have to watch the injury reports, but the Texans have been banged up lately. I think any other team I might take the other team, but both of these teams have rookie quarterbacks, except the Bengals rookie QB is slightly better. Should be a close game. I’ll take the Bengals to cover the spread of 3 as of Monday

What a crazy week of football. There are teams out there who just have no desire to make the playoffs. The Titans had a great opportunity to make a final push for the playoffs, but fell flat against the Colts. not to be outdone the New York Giants got steamrolled by the Washington Redskins at home. The New York Jets got their doors blown off by the Philadelphia Eagles. Who wants to make the playoffs? We’ll find out these next two weeks.

#32. Indianapolis Colts-
The Colts are terrible. Peyton Manning for M.V.P. Jim Caldwell might have saved his job by winning one game this season, which is just funny to me. If you win one game you had a better season than if you lose all 16 games? They’re both still terrible and I don’t think Caldwell is that great of a coach anyway.

#31 St. Louis Rams-

The Only thing the Rams are playing for is to be slightly better than the Minnesota Vikings, the problem is the Vikings look competitive most weeks, while the Rams look forever away. Sam Bradford has had a brutal second year mired by injuries. The Rams need to know if Bradford is the answer next year and the best way to do that is to get better up front and at the WR position. Give him a chance. Will it be with Spags seems less likely every week.

#30 Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings, surprisingly only have two wins. When you watch them play you think they are better than a two win team, but they make too many mistakes to win some of these tight games. What sucks for Jared Allen is that he is having a career year, a defensive N.F.L. Player of the year, kind of season, but isn’t even in that conversation.

Christian Ponder looks like he’s a guy you can rely on to win a few games for you and manage most, but that’s not a knock. The Vikings might actually be better off losing out and hoping the Rams win one to get Franchise LT Matt Kalil in the N.F.L. draft. Picking third is going to be a tough position for them without the kind of value you’re looking for at third overall if you don’t need a quarterback

For this 2012 NFL Mock draft the order was taken from Walterfootball.

I’m putting these players back in school for next year which is why they don’t appear in the first round of my mock draft. QB Landry Jones Oklahom Sooners, OLB Jarvis Jones Georgia, T D.J. Fluker, Alabama

1. Indianapolis Colts (0-12)-Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford Cardinal

This is the easiest pick to make. I think people clamoring for Griffin III right here is a case of over-analyzing a prospect and drumming up some interest. Luck has everything you’re looking for in a N.F.L. prospect. Smart, leadership, good arm, experience in a pro-style offense. Even with huge expectations this year and without ,maybe the same kind of weapons he’s had recently he’s been remarkably consistent.

2. Minnesota Vikings (2-10), Matt Kalil, T, USC

I think the Vikings would love to be picking 2nd ahead of the Rams. Either way I think the 2nd pick is going to be Kalil. Both teams need a lT of the future to protect their young quarterback and Kalil’s a real good one.

3.St. Louis (2-10) Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

Didn’t see that one coming did you? When you pick in the top three of the draft you you have to take players who can be All-Pros in the N.F.L. I’t's always bad to reach for players, but if you’re the Rams here there are really only a few legitimate options. Blackmon (not worth this pick), Jonathan Martin/Riley Reiff (possible), Quinton Coples. I was leaning Coples here, but Richardson can do a lot to help protect a young quarterback as well by continue where Steve Jackson has left off. Jackson is approaching 30 years old and is constantly banged up. Richardson could be the next Adrian Peterson he’s so good. It’d be annoying this year, but how great would it be in three years if the Rams had an Adrian Peterson like running back?

I like to play with picks in my mock draft so I still think it’s more likely they go T, WR, or Coples here, but it’s fun to explore different possibilities.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars(3-9)-Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

No idea what the Jaguars will do. In my 7 round Jaguars mock I had them selecting Morris Claiborne, but what I think the Jaguars will do and what the will actually do never lines up, so here’s another possibility. The Jaguars could feel obligated to give Sam Bradford a weapon to work with him moving forward. If you’re the Jaguars you wish Jefferey had another big season so you could feel comfortable taking him here, because his great N.F.L. size and athleticism is mouth watering. It’s hard not to like Blackmon but he’s more Michael Crabtree Dez Bryant to me. (Not that Crabtree wouldn’t be a great player in a different situation) and we’ve compared him to Reggie Wayne in our scouting report.

The 2012 NFL season is winding down and the playoff picture is becoming clearer every week. Last week I discussed the AFC/NFC East picture. This week we will discuss the dominate AFC/NFC North conference playoff picture. We will go into remaining schedules and predictions.

AFC North

Cleveland Browns: The Browns have been out of the playoff race for a long time now. They have a 4-7 record. The Browns are a pesky team but lack the quarterback and playmakers to get over the 5-6 win hump. This offseason the Browns will have 3 picks in the top 50 more than likely and will have to decide what to do at Quarterback and Running back. Defensively the Browns are very stout and are only a couple players from being dominant.

Cincinnati Bengals: The Bengals are 7-4 right now. I do not think many people predicted this. Dalton has been efficient, the young playmakers have stepped up, and the defense has taken over many games. Currently, the Bengals would be in the playoffs as the last Wild Card team. Their schedule, however, is not favorable. The Bengals play atPittsburgh,Houston at home, andBaltimore at home. They do get a break with the Cardinals at home and atSt. Louis. Bengals must win one of their hard games to get to 10-6. This might be enough to get in. It is between the Jets and Bengals for the last spot in the playoffs.

I’m only one man and with all of the football that is on I can’t keep track, intimately of everything that is going on with every team, which is why I’ve turned to bloggers around fansided to get a breakdown of how the young guys on teams doing. Today’s test subject is Craig Gottschalk from Nice Pick Cowher a Pittsburgh Steelers blog. We talked Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown, and the 2011 draft class. Read on.

If you’re looking for more to read, check out our scouting report page which now has 100+ scouting reports.

1) Which picks do the Steelers hold for the 2012 NFL Draft?

The Steelers did not trade away their future picks in the 2011 draft. They tend to keep the straight and narrow path, unless they feel they can really get a stellar player without having to give up too much. They made some moves in 2010 during the draft to gain players – traded picks for McFadden and Leftwich. Last year they went rounds 1-7 without any moves – which was surprising because people felt the Steelers needed to draft big at corner. They have a pick slated for rounds 1-7 in 2012, which really shouldn’t change until the draft itself.

2) I think Mike Tomlin is my favorite coach in the league. Do Steelers fans also love him?

This is a tougher call than you would think. He’s been a successful coach, but many feel that Tomlin is just riding on the last threads of Coach Cowher’s tails. Many players on the current roster are guys who were on this roster during Cowher’s tenure – and they were a great team then as they are now. I think he’s a good coach in that he talks a good game. He’s straight forward, articulate and understands that there are ultimately no excuses for losing. Those things I think anyone can like and respect. Old school diehards question the inevitable change in team philosophy of shifting to a ground control game to something more balanced and even in favor of the pass over the run. I think if you can see past those things, you can really start to like this guy as a coach. He’s won a Super Bowl with the team and has made the playoffs numerous times in his short time. I think if he can keep the team as contenders in the AFC North year in and year out and get deep into the playoffs, the majority of Steelers Nation will be happy for years to come

The power rankings below are strictly based off of week one performances. These power rankings should look a lot different once we move later into the season.

Here are the NFL power rankings for week 1:

32 Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs deserve to be the worst team on every single power ranking that comes out today. They got shut down by one of the worst teams in the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The Chiefs offense made the Bills defense looked like the Ravens and the Chiefs defense made the Bills offense look like the Packers. Maybe it’s just the Bills are getting better, but it’s still no excuse for the horrible loss they suffered against them.

31. Indianapolis Colts

You can’t blame Kerry Collins two fumbles for the loss against the Houston Texans on Sunday. More of the loss should be put on the running game and rush defense. They ran the ball for only 64 yards and allowed a player that goes by the name of Ben Tate, not Arian Foster, run for 116 yards and a touchdown.

I was quite proud with the results of the draft, and my strategy remained the same as always–to take the best player available in every round.

I had the fifth pick in a 10 man league, so as you can imagine, I was not happy about having that spot. I hate being in the dead middle of the draft order, but when life throws you lemons…

The first four picks went roughly as expected, with Arian Foster, Adrian Peterson, Aaron Rodgers, and Jamaal Charles coming off the board before I picked. I had a choice between Ray Rice and Rashard Mendenhall, and I hold something of a grudge against Rice for him busting out on me last year.

So, I opted for the Steelers’ star running back this time around, nabbing Mendenhall with the fifth pick in the draft.
