Looks like the Michael Vick era could begin Week 3 when his suspension is up. Donovan McNabb left the game early with an apparent back injury.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb has gone to the locker room with an injury suffered on a short touchdown run against the Carolina Panthers.

McNabb scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter to give the Eagles a 38-10 lead. He didn’t immediately get up after the touchdown, and was attended to by Eagles trainers before eventually leaving the field on his own.

Trainers seemed to be checking his lower back or ribs before he headed to the locker room.

This is still way to early to expect this is anything serious. The Eagles might have have been taking precaution since they were blowing out the Panthers. Jake Delhomme got benched after turning the ball over five times this afternoon.

Delhomme was taken out after a miserable performance Sunday brought his total turnovers to 11 in the past two meaningful games. McCown limped off with a left knee injury in the fourth quarter after he was sacked by Darren Howard.

Third-string quarterback Matt Moore entered the game with the Panthers trailing 38-10.

The debate rages over Julius Peppers – trade him or don’t trade him. Still, defensive end has to be the most critical need for this team. Tyler Brayton is a solid backup but little else, frankly. With or without Peppers, this team needs more pressure on the opposing quarterback. Any doubt about this being the team’s biggest need only need listen to John Fox explain that “the best pass defense is pressure on the quarterback.”

Secondaly, the Carolina Panthers experienced a number of injuries last year on that dominant offensive line. Guys like Geoff Hangartner and Jeff Bridges who filled in admirably last season, are gone. Depth with this unit is crucial to maintaining that dominant running game that emerged last season. It will be a priority to come out of this draft with quality backups.

Finally, the Panthers are about to undergo a slight makeover. The secondary will be without Ken Lucas meaning that Richard Marshall will assume his starting spot while CJ Wilson (a kid the franchise is high on) will be the likely nickel corner. Still, depth is necessary especially considering the competition in Atlanta, Arizona and the lack of play makers found at the corner spot last year.

If first round draft picks are overrated, the Panthers have a chance to prove it this season. Their first pick, barring a pre-draft deal, is at number 59. Watch for the team to go best player available at that spot. However, it’s also a distinct possibility that GM Marty Hurney attempts to trade down and parlay his current five picks into many more. That may be the best course of action to come away with quality and quantity.
