Is this the 2007 New York Giants? No, but they sure do scare Packers fans this weekend

After a season long of success in my NFL picks vs the spread I came out flat the opening weekend of the playoffs. I was worried about the Atlanta Falcons balanced offense so I picked them to upset the Giants (which of course they didn’t). I also liked the Bengals out-right. Though I did get the Broncos game right, I also missed on the Lions game. 1-3 is terrible. I’ll do better this week.

Denver at New England

Opening at Denver +13.5

I like New England here at home against the Denver Broncos, but the Patriots are opening up as almost two touchdown favorites. The Patriots haven’t won a playoff game since the A.F.C. Championship game in 2007 and are needing a win. The Denver Broncos are playing with house money right now, no one expected them to win at home vs Pittsburgh and no one expects them to win this game either, which is why at the opening they are a whopping 13.5 point underdogs. I’m going to take the Patriots to win this game, but the Broncos to cover the spread. If Tebow plays half as well as he did vs Pittsburgh the Broncos should score enough points to stay close to the Patriots though I’d admit I’d be surprised if they won outright.

I’ve really been coming on strong lately at the end of the season with three winning weeks in a row. This week all you’ve heard about is that the New York Giants will play against the New York Jets. Obviously there is a lot of importance attatched to this game, but there are a lot of other important games during the week too.

32.  Indianapolis Colts (Previously Colts)

The biggest question now should be, does Jim Caldwell get to keep his job when the Colts draft Andrew Luck first overall next year?  Anyone who ever questioned anything about Peyton Manning looks just silly. This team is just awful Curtis Painter is no good. The defense is only good when they are able to rush the passer and I think it’s more than fair to question whether or not Bill Polian is the mastermind

31.  Washington Redskins (previously Rams)

I,  think it’s fair to put the Redskins here. In a league that is all about what have you done for me lately the Redskins have lost five straight games each one in worse fashion than the one before it. This team stinks.

30. Carolina Panthers (Previously Dolphins)

The Panthers have a bright future, but the future isn’t now. The Panthers have lost two games in a row and are coming off a really terrible loss vs the Titans who have been as up and down as any team in the league.

Cam Newton was Good Today, but Aaron Rodgers was better

Whew Doggy. NFL Mocks, unlike many analysts out there had Cam Newton has a top 10  player on our big board. We were a little concerned with his leadership and wondered if he had it, but knew that he had all the physical tools to succeed in the N.F.L. and early returns are impressive. I was against Cam Newton starting for the Panthers this year and thought it would behoove him to sit a year and learn the N.F.L. game while he developed chemistry with the young Wide receivers on his team, but the Panthers thought differently and very early on they look very right.

Cam Newton went 28 for 46 for a whopping 432 yards and a touchdown. This against a team that just won the Superbowl last year and has stars in the secondary like Nick Collins, Charles Woodson, and Tramon Williams. He also had 10 rushes for 53 yards and a touchdown. Now he did have three interceptions, twice being victimized by Charles Woodson, but early on he looks excellent. He’s making all the throws all over the field and is saying all the right things. Newton is making plays down the field, but also doing a great job of taking what the defense is giving him and taking the check downs, which is a very veteran like move. Unlike some players who live with the checkdowns as a young player, Newton is effectively utlizing the check downs, but still taking smart chances down the field. He’s far from a finished product, he did have three interceptions today after all, but early he looks excellent.
