Cliff Harris 2012 Scouting Report

Cliff Harris came into the 2011 College Football season as one of the top cornerbacks. He was suspended for the first 3 games of the season but has returned back to his form and looks poised to have another big year. He earned second team all american status for cornerbacks as a true sophomore and was widely recognized as the nation’s best punt returner.

Measurables

5’11 165 pounds

Harris Ran an awful 4.79 40 in winter conditioning. Expect that to be higher at the combine.

Strengths

+Good tackler for his size.

+Has big play ability in the next level. Harris is extremely explosive and has great hands and instincts when the ball is in the air. Last year, Harris recorded 6 interceptions and returned one for a touchdown. He has great body, balance, and very fluid hips which allow him to get to any position around the receiver to make a play.

+Speed is extremely important to a cornerback in the NFL and Cliff Harris has a lot of it. I expect him to run a low 40 time but his football speed seems even faster. Harris has great acceleration and can cover a lot of ground in not a lot of time. His acceleration gives him great makeup speed thus reducing his mistakes. He will be able to keep up with any NFL receiver.

NFLmocks and it’s sister site www.withtheifrstpick.com have decided a weekly Q and A session where we alternate asking each other questions about the upcoming college football games.

This week I interviewed Ty MacDonnel.

1). What’s the Game you’re most looking forward to this weekend, first as a fan and second as an amateur scout?

A The game I am most looking forward to this weekend from both a scouting perspective and as a fan is the LSU/Oregon game on Saturday night. Both teams have the talent to compete for the National Championship in January, but a loss will most likely prevent one of them from doing so. I am also a fan of Oregon’s running back LaMichael James and I am anxious to see how he develops this year and where he is graded as a prospect come April. This should be a really great match up for him as LSU as a very fast defense and it should be an exciting game to kick the season off with. Also, from a scouting perspective I will have my eye on Georgia/Boise State on Saturday night as well. That could also be another great game and I cant believe that NCAA scheduled the two best games of the week at the same time on Saturday night. Thank God for DVR!

1. Buffalo Bills- Andrew Luck, Stanford, QB

Ryan Fitzpatrick had an impressive season last season, but he is not a franchise quarterback. Andrew Luck helped put Stanford back on the map maybe he can do the same with the Buffalo Bills.

2. Carolina Panthers- Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State, WR

Even if Steve Smith is still in a Panther uniform by 2012 (Which I highly doubt) they would still need a target down field for franchise quarterback Cam Newton since Smith will be 33 in 2012 and other then him there is really no one else who can be a threat down field.

3. Washington Redskins- Matt Barkley, USC, QB

The Redskins can’t be so sure about John Beck being the starting quarterback this upcoming season. The guy has not played a regular season game since 2007 and he stunk. He is also 29 years old.

We hope to show you what match-ups you should keep an eye on and what would help or hurt that prospects stock. We encourage you to take a look at these match-ups and watch closely on Saturday to see who comes out on top. We will discuss the results of those match-ups on Sunday.

Game: #2 Auburn @ #11 Alabama

Where to Watch: Friday Nov. 26th 2:30PM EST CBS

Prospects: QB Cam Newton vs S Mark Barron, LB Dont’a Hightower, and DE Marcell Dareus

Thoughts: Cam Newton has run around and through every defense he has faced this season. The Tigers will be going up against their 4th ranked team of the year and by far their toughest test. Alabama also has the offensive weapons to keep the pressure not only on the Auburn defense, but also Newton, who may have to find more magic to keep up on the scoreboard. Dareus and Hightower have to contain Newton when he runs and Barron and the Tide secondary need to disrupt the passing game.

How they Raise their Stock: Newton could raise his by staying in the pocket longer and making better passes down the field. We know he can run, but a big game passing with a chance at the BCS Title game on the line would send his stock even higher. Alabama’s defense already has the reputation as one of the best groups in the country and shutting down someone as hot as Cam Newton would give them all an aura of invincibility.
