We have analyzed Mayhew’s ability to put together a sound coaching staff, initiate trades with players who the Lions believe they can get more out  then their previous team did, and Mayhew’s use FA to round out his roster.  We have yet to discuss Mayhew’s greatest ability: drafting talent.

Mayhew is a disciple of BPA strategy.  His belief in the draft is to acquire talent and fill holes in FA and trades.  He has stuck to his guns on this policy even when the team has glaring holes at OL, LB, and DB this past draft.  Let’s break down Mayhew’s selections into divisions

Stars

Matthew Stafford            QB         Georgia

Brandon Pettigrew          TE          OklahomaState

Ndumakong Suh              DT          Nebraska

Stafford has the makings of a franchise QB.  HE is the face of the franchise and only needs to stay healthy to achieve his potential.  Pettigrew is already a top 10 TE and will only get better.  He can block and be a weapon in the passing game.  Suh might be the best young DL in the NFL.

Future Stars

Louis Delmas                     FS          Western Michigan

Delmas has the potential to be a Pro Bowl safety.  He only needs to play in control and stay healthy.

Starters

DeAndre Levy                   LB          Wisconsin

Jahvid Best                         RB          California

Amari Spievy                     SS          Iowa

Levy is a capable starter at all three LB positions.  He is the leader of the defense with his sound game calls.  Best is a huge weapon in the pass and run game.  Spievy might be a future star if he continues his improvement.

1. Washington Redskins: Andrew Luck, Stanford, QB

“With the first pick of the 2012 NFL Draft the Washington Redskins will select Andrew Luck, quarterback out of Stanford” Yes you heard it here, the Washington Redskins will land the number one pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, being that its kind of obvious who they would selected if they do indeed get the number 1 pick. As of right now, the quarterback job looks to be John Beck’s job to lose this year. Now I don’t want to bring any doubt to the fact that he may be the starting quarterback next year because he may surprise us all, but this guy has not started in an NFL game since 2007 and he’s going to be 30 in August. Not really sure if he’s going to be the guy for the Redskins in the 2012-2013 season.

Andrew Luck helped lay Stanford back on the map in the Country, I’m sure he can do the same for the Washington Redskins with his willingness to win, high IQ for the game, and off course his on the field play, which is pretty good I might add.

 2. Carolina Panthers: Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina, WR

Cam Newton could really use a friend for many years to come down field; Alshon Jeffery could be that friend. Cam Newton at the moment doesn’thave the greatest of friends in terms of targets withSteve Smithasking for trades right and left, and that’s it there’s not a legit target other than Steve Smith to even bring up into the conversation.

The great debate between who is going to go higher in the 2012 NFL Draft Alshon Jeffery or Justin Blackmon. At the moment it looks like it will be Alshon Jeffery, but remember all can change during the season. Alshon Jeffery reminds me a lot of Calvin Johnson; he just goes after the ball when thrown to him. He doesn’t wait for it to fall into his hands he just leaps and using his great hands to catch it kind of like Calvin Johnson.

3. Buffalo Bills: Matt Barkley, USC, QB

Even though Ryan Fitzpatrick had a strong year last season, I still question weather or not he can be the franchise quarterback for the Buffalo Bills because simply, he has not performed like he did last season on a consistent basis through out his career.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: The Washington Redskins land the number one pick - NFL Mocks - NFL Mocks - Covering the 2012 NFL draft, Mock Draft Database, Scouting Reports, and Fantasy Football

The NFL isn't littered with Former Cornhuskers the past decade, but if Suh and Amukamara are any indication that's about to change. (picture source huskersgameday.com)

Quarterback:

None Drafted

Not a surprise the Cornhuskers are not known for their talented quarterback play.

Running back:

Correl Buckhalter, and Brandon Jackson (Roy Helu)

Neither of these players are standouts in the N.F.L. though, they are both very nice complementary running backs. Jackson had his turn to shine this past season when Ryan Grant was hurt for the season, but he was not able to fully capitalize only averaging 3.7 yards per carry with nearly 200 carries, though he did have a nice 40+ receptions for about 300 yards, which is above average for a running back. Buckhalter has always been a player who comes in and gives you snaps and does well in that limited role averaging a career 4.5 yards per carry, but he’s never had even a 140 carries in a season.
