Take Your Pick: Best Quarterback Prospects

This is a multiple-part series that encourages readers to participate in the draft discussion. Don’t agree with my top prospects at a respective position? Tell me who should be or shouldn’t be included and why, I want to hear your opinions!

I decided to save the quarterback position until last for the “Take Your Pick” series as I figured most opinions would given on this discussion. It has been interesting watching the quarterback prospects for the 2011 NFL Draft rise and fall on draft boards of analysts from the end of the NFL season to the scouting combine and into the pro days. After the 2009 season, Washington quarterback Jake Locker looked to be the No. 1 overall pick before deciding to stay in school for another season. Auburn quarterback Cam Newton certainly was not on many people’s minds before the 2010 season and became one of the elite prospects in the draft after winning both the Heisman Trophy and a national championship. Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett was pegged early this offseason as a first round pick but has since seen his stock drop with many believing he will fall into the second round. Next week, we will finally ultimately learn these quarterbacks’ homes. So here it is, my top three quarterbacks entering this year’s draft and my final edition of “Take Your Pick.”

Updated 2011 NFL Mock Draft: 1/31/11

The Senior Bowl week has resulted in several prospects seeing a big jump in their draft stock. This week features a few of those prospects making their debut in our mock draft. One surprise is Ryan Mallett falling out of the 1st round mainly because I was unable to find a good fit from him. I could see the Titans making a move for him if they go in that direction. Nick Fairley- DT- Auburn

I am firmly on-board the Nick Fairley hype train. Fairley will be a great complement to a defensive line that features an emerging Charles Johnson. Ron Rivera will love the way that Fairley can penetrate the pocket and wreak havoc.

Da’Quan Bowers- DE- Clemson

John Fox and new defensive coordinator Dennis Allen are likely to make the switch to a 4-3 defensive scheme. Bowers is worthy of this pick due to his ability to rush the passer but also hold strong against the run. The duo of Bowers and Dumervil will give offensive coordinators nightmares.

Patrick Peterson- CB- LSU

There is going to be a ton of buzz following the combine after Peterson runs a stellar 40 yard dash. Peterson is not just an athlete, he can be a true shutdown corner which is becoming increasing more valuable in the NFL. The Bills have a lot of needs but Peterson represents the best value at this pick. A name that will get a lot of attention at this spot will be Von Miller but the recent struggles of Aaron Maybin may stop the Bills from pulling the trigger on Miller.

AJ Green- WR- Georgia

It appears more and more likely that both Chad Ochocinco and T.O. will not be returning which leaves a major void at the wide receiver position. Adding Green will allow the Bengals fans to quickly forget the controversial Ochocinco. Green has the skill level and talent to be considered for the top 0verall pick!

Blaine Gabbert- QB- Missouri

The Cardinals are desperate for a quarterback and need to go in that direction with this selection. While I don’t feel comfortable selection any of the quarterbacks this early the Cardinals don’t have a choice. Gabbert is the top quarterback on my board and has a ton of upside, however, he needs time to develop. Arizona would be wise to use this selection to get their quarterback of the future and then use free agency to get a short term fix.

NFL Mocks is rolling out our new scouting report template that brings you even more in-depth analysis. We break down several key traits and grade them on a scale from 5-1. The breakdown is that 5 being the best and 1 being the worst. We then will give the prospect an overall grade that is also based on the 5-1 scaling system. At the end of each of the reports we give an overall assessment as well as a definition of our grade. This reports are rather lengthy but it really gives you a good feel for each player. NFL Power Rankings: Week 6

Alright I know we are an NFL Draft site but the Power Rankings are going to play an important role here at NFL Mocks. These Rankings are how we will be determining the draft order for our Mock Drafts. So take a look a the Rankings and let us know what you think, as usual I expect some good feedback! These rankings were completed by staff writer Jason Madson.

1. Pittsburgh Steelers (4-1) I was worried about rust with Big Ben missing 4 weeks, but the Browns were a good warmup game for him. The defense is playing better than expected.

2. New York Jets (5-1) They are a small step below the Steelers for the top spot, but its close. With everybody getting healthy this will be a very dangerous team down the road. Survived a scare this week, but those are expected.

3. New England Patriots (4-1)This team just keeps getting it done, no matter who they plug in. Deion Branch had a huge game in his return to the Pats.

4. Baltimore Ravens (4-2) Yes they suffered a tough defeat to the Pats this past week in which they lead most of the game, but this is still an incredibly good team. The offense hasn’t hit on all cylinders yet, once they do Watch Out!

5. New York Giants (4-2) They got the win against the Lions, but it wasn’t easy. The Giants head to Dallas this week in what should be a very tough game regardless of records.

6. Tennessee Titans (4-2) The Titans destroyed the Jags last night, but lost Vince Young to a sprained knee. If he is out for an extended period of time, it could hurt the Titans season.

7. Philadelphia Eagles (4-2) They blew out the Falcons on Sunday, Kolb had his best game of the season and all everyone can talk about is Vick’s absence from the sidelines. Celebrate the win Eagles fans! DeSean Jackson suffered a severe concussion and could miss multiple games.

8. New Orleans Saints (4-2) The Saints went to Tampa Bay and destroyed an overachieving Bucs team on Sunday. That is what they were supposed to do. Don’t look past the Browns on your way to the Halloween showdown with the Steelers.

9. Indianapolis Colts (4-2) Indy always finds a way to get the job done, Peyton Manning is the biggest reason for that. They had a tough game on Sunday night, but in the end the Colts outlasted the Redskins.

10. Houston Texans (4-2) Houston made the comeback of the day on Sunday, trailing by 10 in the 4th quarter to the Chiefs. They came back to win it with some offensive firepower and late defense. I’m still not sold on the Texans.

College Football Game of the Week: #1 Oklahoma @ #11 Missouri

College Football is officially here and the writers at NFL Mocks could not be more excited to start evaluating some NFL Prospects. You can count on at least 1 article a week that will highlight a big time College Football game a week. The article will focus on identifying some of the top prospects from each team and the key match-ups within that game.

What a jump in the standings for the Oklahoma Sooners, they went from #7 to #1 in one week and the start their reign at the top with a tough road test against Missouri. This will be a very exciting game that is sure to feature a lot of offense.

Oklahoma

Our top Oklahoma player is linebacker Travis Lewis. Lewis is a very athletic player that could fit into any number of NFL defenses. He is a guy that will always be around the ball and will likely end the game leading your team in tackles. He will face a tough test in this game because he will be ask to cover a lot of underneath routes.
