The Miami Dolphins defense was stout against the run. The Dolphins allowed only 95.6 yards per game on the ground.

What is impressive is that the Dolphins only gave up 19.3 points per game despite how few turnovers they created (they were in the middle of the league for interceptions and dead last for fumble recoveries with only 3 for the entire season).

The Dolphins were able to generate 41 sacks this year even though they only had one player with more than 8 sacks (Cameron Wake 8.5), Jason Taylor had 7 and Jared Odrick had six sacks.

We’ve been trying to complete one 7 round mock draft for each team before the combine was over and so far we’ve done many of them, which can be found by following this link. Today we’ll take a look at the prospects for the Miami Dolphins. The Miami Dolphins have all of their picks this year, but they did have to switch with the Saints in the sixth round from Reggie Bush. What I’m saying is that the Dolphins will pick towards the back-end of the sixth round instead of near 10 in the sixth round.

For this mock’s purposes I’m also going to assume that they address the Quarterback Position through free agency. Right now in my uninformed opinion I think the top landing spot for Peyton Manning has to be Miami. I think they are the team that gives him the best chance to win immediately, and can also offer him a good amount of money, and it’s a team that has made it known that they will throw money at him, so it makes sense.

I’ll be using Wes Bunting’s Big Board to make these picks because our updated big board is not quite finished yet.

All of our scouting reports can be found on our scouting report page.

1st round: Courtney Upshaw, LB, Alabama Crimson Tide

The more I think about this pick, the more I like it. First Upshaw Gives them another dynamic pass rusher opposite Cameron Wake, which they currently do not have. Secondly, it will help improve the secondary, because a good pass rush alleviates a lot of secondary problems, and thirdly Upshaw is a player that could very well be coveted by the Buffalo Bills, their rival who are desperate for a pass rush. Adding Upshaw does all of those things, not to mention that Upshaw has been terrific at the Senior Bowl and is the best pass rusher in this class.

2011 Outcome (6-10)

The Dolphins had one of their typical years under Sparano….playing tough and down to the wire in most game but failing to win most of them. Finally, Stephen Ross had enough and pulled the plug on Sparano and company. The Dolphins have a solid roster that has a dominant defense and only needs to improve the OL and acquire a QB. The Dolphins will be very aggressive in trying to trade up for Robert Griffin prior to the draft.

Coach Seat Temperature

Sparano was too vanilla for the city ofMiami. Stephen Ross would be wise to get an exciting coach who can help with dwindling ticket sales. It appears that coach will be Jeff Fischer. Jeff Fisher is as stable as they come and if not for the Vince Young debacle might still be with the Titans. I feel bad for Todd Bowles who deserved a chance to be their HC but too closely resembled Sparano. DCMikeNolan should be retained or else he will be a highly sought after DC.

So keep that in mind while you’re reading this particular mock draft, I know that some of the picks are not as likely as others, but it’s not only fun to explore different opportunities it’s also a useful exercise. What teams should do in the draft does not always matchup with what they will do.

All of our scouting reports are on our scouting report page

1. Indianapolis Colts (0-10)-Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford Cardinal

Boring pick. Moving on.

2. Miami Dolphins (2-7)-Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

I know this seems really high and like a draftnik’s over-reaction and that is definitely possible, but Griffin has that word “potential” attached to him which makes him extremely intriguing. Potential has gotten a lot of teams in trouble int he past and will continue to in the future. I think that Griffin is the third best quarterback in this class behind Luck and Barkley and ahead of Landry Jones and others (Tannehill, Foles, etc).

3. St. Louis (2-7)-Matt Kalil, T, USC

The Rams can upgrade three positions with one pick. Matt Kalil improves LT, Roger Saffold improves the right tackle position, and Jason Smith could improve the guard.

Players

Reggie Bush: Considered only a third down back in New Orleans many laughed when Miami not only traded for Reggie Bush but made him their starting “feature” back. He has done better than anyone could have thought. He is not a bruising 20 carries a game back, but half way through the season he is on pace for: 176 carries, 854 yards, 4.8 YPC, 2 TD’s, and 48 receptions for 328 yards and 2 TD’s. That’s solid production. I believe if he stays healthy he can achieve those numbers and be a solid part of the rebuilding of the Miami Dolphins. Will Last

The Broncos did move the ball in the first half, well enough to set up two Matt Prater field goals from 49 and 43 yards, both of which were missed. They did that with Tim Tebow attempting a mere five passes in the entire first half.

Earlier this week profootballtalk.com relayed a report from league insiders that there is growing concern that Andrew Luck could make the same kind of power play that Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning made in 2004.

“Absolutely. I’ve heard that for the last two years,” an unnamed scout told Breer. “There’s no question that it could be a Manning thing all over again.”

There are two ways that Luck could accomplish “power play”. The first, and probably less appealing, option for Luck is simply to remain in college for another year because he still has eligibility. The second optoin, and more likely (assuming he’s going to make a Power Play) is to say he won’t play for a team and would rather sit out the entire year thus forcing a trade (like Eli Manning).

What does this mean for the contenders of “Suck for Luck”? Who is in the lead, and which teams might Luck (based entirely on my own speculative reasoning) not want to play on? What I’m saying is this…would Luck pull a power play? I don’t know, but I’ll give reasons for each team why someone might consider it and why they shouldn’t.

Miami Dolphins-

The Dolphins are the team that in my opinion is most likely to end up with the first pick in the 2012 N.F.L. draft. In a sport that is as violent as football, it is near impossible for a lame duck coach to motivate his players, this is the case with Miami. It doesn’t help that Matt Moore will start the remainder of the season.

Unfortunately for Dolphins fans, I can see this being one of the teams that Luck could not want to lay for. It’s a good enough franchise, but the ownership seems a bit crazy and perhaps what the team tried to do with Tony Sparano is a turn off. Also what could be off-putting for Luck could be the ownerships insistence on Star Owners, it almost makes a spectacle of the team. “Hey come see us play because Jennifer Lopez owns part of the team”. I would like to see Luck in aqua. Who else to take down the over-confident Jets and the never loss the division Patriots? But maybe it’s not meant to be.
