How many times do we see a team or a player exceed expectations in a football game and we think, there is no way that can last. That player is either too young or not that good. That team had an easy week or the ball just bounced that way. Most times it does not last, but every so often those early signs are premonitions of what is to come. In this weekly column we will look at 3 players who jump out. Also we will be looking at the playoff picture by conference.

Players

Laurent Robinson: After bouncing around from team to team, Robinson has found a home with the Cowboys. His numbers through 9 games are pretty good: 33 receptions, 488 yards, and 5 touchdowns. He runs precise routes, shows great speed, and reliable hands. Robinson’s numbers are high due to numerous injuries to Miles Austin. With the season winding down I believe Robinson will continue to get looks do to two reasons. One, the Cowboys are a passing team and Romo will throw the ball 25-30 times a week. Two, hamstring injuries do not go away in the cold weather. Austin will need time to heal and that means Robinson will be Romo’s #3 target behind Witten and Bryant. Will Last

Lions Analysis: Lions 49 (7-3) Panthers 35 (2-8)

What Happened:

That was quite the game. I told readers before the game this would be an exciting matchup between two of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL. The Cam Newton experience was all that it was cracked up to be. Newtonwill be a force with some more seasoning. Stafford showed a lot of heart coming back from a disastrous 1st quarter. His hand obviously is not going to hinder him too much going forward…at least indoors. The best story on Sunday was Kevin Smith. With numerous knee injuries he was cut from the Lions and unemployed until a couple of weeks ago. On Sunday he accounted for 201 total yards and three touchdowns. He looked fast and strong and appears to be healthy. This is great news not only for the Lions run game but also their passing game.

Matchup outcomes:

1. Jeff Backus vs. Charles Johnson: Advantage: Jeff Backus. Backus shut down Johnson for the most part. Panthers did get two sacks but were mostly contained by the Lions OL. Lions even ran the ball for 169 yards. Backus has had a polarizing season, but on Sunday he did a fine job against a very solid DE.

I was asked e to write a few paragraphs to address the Lions needs in regards to the NFL Draft. I then laughed because its much, much easier to address what my team doesn’t need. A wide receiver. We have Calvin Johnson and he is a stud, a clear cut superstar, but that’s about it.

At runningback we have Kevin Smith. At moments, he looked brilliant. But when you’re 0-16, teams don’t respect you so should I pull out all the stats on “who was on defense” when he broke free an bought us some chunk yardage? Thats the deal with bad teams; Your vision is distorted because you can’t see the bigger picture. You can’t tell what’s going on when other teams do not view you as legitimate competition. Coaching wise or Defense and Offense were handled terribly, worst in the league and as the books will tell you, worst in history.
