Kansas City Chiefs off Season Check List

2011 Outcome (7-9)

The start of the 2011 Season went horribly wrong for the Chiefs. Losing Jamal Charles, Eric Berry, and Tony Moeaki to season ending injuries depleted them of star power. They were 0-3 after blowouts to the Bills and Lions and it appeared a chase for the #1 pick was inevitable. Then the Chiefs went on a 4 game win streak and appeared to be in the lead for the AFC West…than a 4 game losing streak followed by the firing of Todd Haley. Romeo Crennell salvaged the season and earned the HC position.

Coach Seat Temperature

Crennell did an amazing job as DC and earned the players trust. Due to that and how well the team performed since he was the intern coach he was given a 3 year deal. I think Crennell is the right man for this team. Pioli and Haley did not see eye to eye and it cost the franchise. It will be interesting to see if the Chiefs bring in a DC and if they keep Bill Muir as the OC.

The 2012 NFL season is winding down and the playoff picture is becoming clearer every week. Last week I discussed the AFC/NFC South picture. This week we will discuss the improving AFC/NFC West conference playoff picture. We will go into remaining schedules and predictions.

AFC West

Kansas City Chiefs: The NFL can certainly change quickly. The Chiefs were the AFC West 2010 Champs. In 2011, injuries have decimated this team and now their HC Todd Haley was recently fired. I think Haley is a good OC, but not a good HC. He lacks the ability to remain consistent in his day to day approach. Injuries were a huge detriment this season with season ending injuries to Matt Cassell, Jamal Charles, Tony Moeaki, and Eric Berry. That is a lot of talent on the IR. Currently at 5-8 they are not mathematically out of the playoffs but they are not going to make it in this year. They play the Packers and the Raiders at home before going to enver. At best the Chiefs will finish 6-10 and a good chance of improving next year.

This is my preliminary 2012 NFL Mock Draft for Kansas City Chiefs. I asked Patrick Allen at arrowheadaddict which picks the Chiefs had and he told me they had all of their picks, and the extra one they got for moving down was last year so that’s what I’m going with (though he did say I think). If you know different, let me know.

Click on the names for that players scouting report. And check out All of our other scouting reports (more than 120) are on our scouting report page.

I’m going assume the Chiefs are picking around 7th:

1st round Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa Hawkeyes

Offensive line or quarterback seems likely here. The problem I have with going quarterback is at this point I’m not sure if the Chiefs have given up on Matt Cassel yet or not. If I knew that this mock would be easier. I’m going to assume that they have NOT given up on Cassel as their franchise quarterback and because they drafted a QB early on last year, I’m going to avoid quarterback altogether.

With that being said Riley Reiff is a nice tackle prospect in a fairly top heavy OT class. Reiff or Jonathan Martin are the most likely tackles to be drafted after USC’s Matt Kalil. Reiff has the athleticism and range to be a very effective LT at the N.F.L., though he has the potential to be an All-pro kind of right tackle. Either way, the selection of Reiff instantly improve the Chiefs offensive line.

There was a lot of movement in the middle of the pack this week with the Giants terrible performance, Tebow-mania, and the sneaky good Seahawks.

Looking for more to read? We have now updated our scouting report page to include more than 120 scouting reports. Check it out.

32. Indianapolis Colts (Previously Colts)

The biggest question now should be, does Jim Caldwell get to keep his job when the Colts draft Andrew Luck first overall next year? Anyone who ever questioned anything about Peyton Manning looks just silly. This team is just awful, Curtis Painter is no good. The defense is only good when they are able to rush the passer and I think it’s more than fair to question whether or not Bill Polian is the mastermind everyone has made him out to be. This team just looks devoid of talent.

31. Washington Redskins (previously Rams)

I, think it’s fair to put the Redskins here. In a league that is all about what have you done for me lately the Redskins have lost six straight games each one in worse fashion than the one before it. This team stinks.

That’s what I wrote last week (we’ll I changed five to six). I think the team coming out on fire against the Cowboys is an anomaly that has more to do with their division rivalry than anything so I’m not putting any stock into it.

It’s no question that quarterback Tim Tebow has struggled for the Broncos this season, but that doesn’t mean this team isn’t behind him, or that the front office isn’t behind him, even though it may seem that way at times.

This week has seen a lot of movement because of some absolutely pitiful performances. The Charges tried as many ways as possible to lose the games vs the Chiefs, what’s up with Philip Rivers this season by the way? After a few huge seasons, he has been bad this year. Heading into the game he had 7 touchdowns to 9 interceptions and after four quarters of football, he had 7 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a huge botched fumble.

32. Indianapolis Colts (Previously Colts)

I thought the Colts had enough pride to put together a few good showings this season amd maybe squeak out a few wins. I could not have been more wrong. They are absolutely terrible.

Peyton Manning, if he is their quarterback moving forward should win M.V.P every year until he retires. In fact, Peyton Manning should win some M.V.P votes THIS year with how bad this Colts team is.

He’s also not paid enough.

They are playing absolutely awful.

31. Miami Dolphins (previously Dolphins)

I’m beginning to think that Matt Moore isn’t a bad option as a backup quarterback, and he’s had the Dolphins close to two wins, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. Had the Rams come out and played poorly again I might have been able to move the Dolphins up a spot in their good battle vs the Giants, but the Rams walloped the Saints, so no luck for the Dolphins.

30. Arizona Cardinals (Previously Rams)

The Cardinals had a huge lead vs the Ravens and a chance to pull of a major upset like the Rams did, but lost it at the end. It would have been the second embarrassing loss in a row for the Ravens. The Cardinals now have a lot of division games left, but also games vs the Eagles, Cowboys, and Browns. The Cardinals have an outside chance to suck for Luck. This upcoming game vs the Rams is a big one for the Cardinals as they will be playing vs the Rams.

This week wasn’t a great week for N.F.L. fans as there were a lot of bad games out there, but some of the games really spoke volumes about different teams. First of all, the Chiefs Clearly do not understand the concept of “suck for Luck”. So they have lost out. The Ravens whooped down the Jaguars, and the Jaguars are just plain ol’ bad. That’s one of the worst situations in the league right there and one of the teams most likely to be hiring a new coach after the season.

33. Me, as a handicapper

My third straight rough week in a row picking N.F.L games vs the spread. I was dominating early in the season, but now I might be slightly lower than .500. I absolutely embarrassed myself on two picks this week. The first really bad pick was thinking the Colts could keep it close vs the Saints. I also thought that the Raiders would cover the spread (4). Speaking of the Raiders…well what can you say. Yikes.

32. Indianapolis Colts (Previously Dolphins)

Obviously they weren’t going to go up in the power rankings. The only question is would they go down. I picked the Colts to cover the hefty spread vs the Saints because I thought this is a veteran team that is going to really play hard on prime-time and until they win a game. Oh well, guess I was wrong. The Colts will probably still win one or two games, but how many votes will Peyton Manning get as M.V.P this year while not even playing a game? He should win M.V.P. every year he plays until he retires if the Colts win 5 games or more. Anyone questioning his greatness now? All I’m saying is Brady out, Patriots go 11-5. Manning misses a season the Colts can’t even score 11 points.

I decided that in order to better fully grasp how well some of the rookies are doing around the league, I am only one man after all. I would reach out to different bloggers around the web to get a more critical and “in the know” version of rookie performances. This week I reached out to Patrick Allen of the Kansas City Chiefs blog Arrow Head Addict. This is what he had to say.

1) Are fans excited about the two recent two victories or depressed that they’ve lost ground in the “suck for luck” race?

While I am sure every Chiefs fan would be intrigued to have a QB with the potential of Andrew Luck, most don’t want to lose a season to get there. KC fans want wins and they want to see the boys they have on the field now do something special.
2) They say it takes three years to truly evaluate a draft class. How is the 2009 Draft class looking? Is Tyson Jackson a bust?

There isn’t really anyone from the 2009 class left. Most have been cut. Donald Washington, Ryan Succop and T-Jax are all that remain. Succop appears to be the best of them but Jackson appears to finally be coming around a bit. I doubt he’ll ever be as good as the Chiefs hoped when they drafted him and he certainly isn’t worth his salary but he is playing well enough now to stick around in the league. He could eventually develop into a solid run defender but he will likely always have trouble getting after the QB.
