Aside from an embarrassing road loss to the Packers last week, the Broncos have actually not been all that bad for a team that just picked 2nd in the draft this past April. Still, it’s extremely disappointing to see these guys come out and lose games because of mistakes they could have avoided.

You almost don’t mind when a team like the Packers comes out and just shows you who’s boss, but when your team shoots itself in the foot repeatedly, it gets frustrating to say the least.

In an extremely interesting move, the Denver Broncos are holding private workouts with quarterbacks Blaine Gabbert of Missouri and Washington’s Jake Locker. These moves are particularly interesting because it says one of two things about the Broncos.

They are trying to put on a big front and trade down

They are legitimately interested in drafting a quarterback

The leverage the Broncos have over other teams right now is that they are simply keeping them guessing. Now, even though the Broncos have traded for Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn and drafted Tim Tebow over the last two years, teams are thinking, “Are they serious right now?”

As someone who has been a Broncos fan for years and has been following the team more closely than ever over the last few years, I can say that drafting a quarterback would be the worst thing the new regime could do to get started. What motivation does Denver have to take a quarterback?

One of the most important factors when preparing for the NFL Draft is knowing each and every NFL team. NFL Mocks keeps a very close eye on each team and will bring you an updated needs assessment at the end of each month. These needs will help as we prepare to make predictions for the 2011 NFL Draft. Continue to check out our team needs page to find the most recent assessments. Also after looking at the team needs move on over to the Big Board and see what prospects might fit your teams need. A don’t forget to study up on your favorite prospects at NFLMocksGameFilm!

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs had a very good year, but they still need to improve in a lot of areas. The Offensive Line is still a concern as they are aging and some parts are just not very good. An upgrade on the interior of the line would be my first choice. Rodney Hudson or Mike Pouncey would be a nice addition here. A playmaker opposite Bowe would be a nice addition. Jon Baldwin would work. Defensively the Chiefs need a stout NT like Baylor’s Phil Taylor in the later rounds and an OLB to pair with Tamba Hali.

The Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders were a pretty decent team this year. They still need help in a few areas though. The loss of Asomugha is huge, he must be replaced. Offensive Line needs an upgrade across the board. Stefan Wisniewski would be a good pick for Oakland. I know they picked DHB a couple years ago and Jacoby Ford emerged as a good option, but WR is another position that needs to be looked at. Tandon Doss could be a good pick later in the draft.

The Denver Broncos are a team going through a pretty big transition as the leadership and hierarchy of the team and front office has changed. McDaniels is out which opened up spots of power in the GM and head coaching positions. To fill these, owner Pat Bowlen tapped former quarterback and Bronco great John Elway to run the day to day operations of the team. Elway gave GM Brian Xanders more power in making personnel moves that were limited under Josh McDaniels. Earlier this week, Elway hired former Carolina head coach John Fox, who turned around a franchise in North Carolina from 1-15 to the Super Bowl in two years. Why is this all important? Because the Broncos are coming off a 4-12 season and have a high draft pick to start their new journey towards the big game.

There are bound to be lots of little changes in how decisions are made on all levels of the organization, but we are going to attempt to pinpoint the direction they may head by looking at the past of the guys making the ultimate decisions. A lot has been made on John Elway‘s comments on Denver QB Tim Tebow, but like most things concerning Tebow, they were blown out of proportion by fans. Elway continued later in the quoted story (and tweets) to say how much he does like Tim and hopes he can mature in the quarterback for the Broncos. What could possibly make this more of a non story is this quote from Elway when he was being courted for the position he now holds:

We have completed 6 weeks in the NFL season and while things on the top are a little uncertain we have some teams clearly in the running for the #1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. First I will look their chances to land the #1 overall pick, then I will talk about what they might do with that pick, after that I will talk about the state of each franchise. Look for this series of articles to continue as we move closer to naming the winner (loser) of the #1 overall pick! Be sure to check out our team needs page!

Chances for the #1 Pick: HIGH

The Carolina Panthers are one of two teams that have only 1 win and sit tied with the Dallas Cowboys for the chance at the #2 overall pick. However, I don’t think they will be in this position for long because the Cowboys have too much talent to not win a few more games this season. I also feel they have a good shot at moving up to the #1 spot because if you have watched the Bills lately you could argue they will get a win very soon. Looking down the Panthers schedule they have only two games that I feel they have a shot at winning and they are the games vs. Seattle and Arizona. Even if the Panthers win both of those games a 3 win team has a good shot to land the #1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

How will the Panthers use the #1 overall pick?

Alright I know we are an NFL Draft site but the Power Rankings are going to play an important role here at NFL Mocks. These Rankings are how we will be determining the draft order for our Mock Drafts. So take a look a the Rankings and let us know what you think, as usual I expect some good feedback!

1. New York Jets- It was a big win last night for the Jets. Then came in to a game against the Vikings who stole the headlines by acquiring Randy Moss and still stay focused and pulled off the win. They have a winning formula and that’s running the ball, playing strong defense, and not turning it over.

2. Baltimore Ravens- The Ravens keep on rolling and Joe Flacco keeps on developing. The Ravens are much like the Jets in that they can run the ball, play good defense, and limit turnovers. The only reason they are ranked #2 is because I believe the Jets secondary is a lot stronger than the Ravens. At some point that might be exploited as a weakness.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers- They have shocked a lot of people so far this year and now they get their franchise quarterback back. With this defense and the return of Big Ben, nobody is going to want to face this team.

.

4. Atlanta Falcons- This team as quietly put themselves at the top of the NFC and look every bit the part. They have won a few ugly games but a win is a win and that’s all that matters. Matt Ryan is continuing his asention to the top of the quarterback ranks.

.

5. Chicago Bears- Speak about ugly wins! The Bears quarterbacks combined for 51 passing yards and 4 interceptions! However, this defense looks to be stronger than every and it was nice to see another player emerge opposite Julius Peppers. Idonije posted a career high 3 sacks in the win and it looks like the Bears will be getting Culter back for next weeks game.

.

6. New England Patriots- Does anyone really feel that the Patriots will miss Randy Moss all that much? Moss is a great player but I think the Pats have a solid plan and they know how to win football games. Look for New England to spread the ball around more and get others involved in the offense.

7. Kansas City Chiefs- The Chiefs suffered their first loss but they still played very well against a good Colts team. The defense is for real and they will be able to keep this team in a lot of football games. They just need to find a way to score points consistently. The pressure is going to start to pick up for quarterback Matt Cassel.

8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Nobody expected this team to be any good this year, including me. However, they have been able to put together a nice start to the season and yesterdays win was a big one. I have to admit that Josh Freeman is well ahead of where I expected him to be at this point in his career.

9. Indianapolis Colts- The Colts had a good win against the Chiefs and did so by limiting the Chiefs rushing attack. However, things just don’t seem to be clicking on offense and the Colts have struggled to protect Peyton. This will be something that other teams pick up on!

10. Washington Redskins- Wins like the one the Redskins had yesterday are ones that could get a team on a good role. The defense played well all game and the offense responded when it had to. They should have some momentum going forward after those big wins against the Packers and Eagles.
