AFC South

Indianapolis Colts: The Packers are not the only team striving for perfection. The Colts are trying to achieve a feat that only the 08 Lions were able to do….go 0-16. Currently the Colts are 0-12 and they even brought in the man who was the QB for the Lions during that stretch, Dan Orlovsky. Games versus the Ravens, Titans, and Texans are for sure losses. It will all come down to the last game at Jacksonville for the Colts to win a game this season. Colts are devoid of talent at all levels and Andrew Luck alone will not be able to turn this team around.

The Jacksonville Jaguars moved up in the 2011 N.F.L. draft to select Quarterback Blaine Gabbert, despite Gabbert’s struggles this year with the Jaguars extending G.M. Gene Smith it looks like Gabbert will remain the quarterback next year. Had the Jaguars fired both Del Rio and Smith people could make a case that the Jaguars would look quarterback early in the draft, but I don’t think they will.

The Jaguars are losing a lot of games and are likely a top five selection, I believe they gave up picks (1st rounder and second rounder) last year but have all of their picks this year. The Jaguars are kind of tough for me to figure out what they are going to do so this is probably (a more) futile exercise (than usual). Also making this mock even more difficult is the fact that the Jaguars are currently without a head coach for next year, and when they hire a new coach it which will surely impact how they approach the draft. The last problem I have here is that I don’t watch the Jaguars nearly as much as I should, which is why I’m awaiting your critiques Jaguars fans…I don’t feel confident in this mock at all.

For all of our scouting reports check out our scouting report page

1st round: Morris Claiborne CB LSU Tigers

I get it the Jagaurs need a weapon for Blaine Gabbert yadda yadda yadda. I’m not yet convinced that Justin Blackmon is worth a top five pick and Alshon Jefferey production this year is going to cost him I think. I love Michael Floyd, but his character concerns will keep him out of the top 10 as well. Claiborne has arguably been better than Patrick Peterson was last year (not saying he’s more talented than Peterson) and the cornerback position is at a premium in today’s N.F.L. The Jaguars don’t have talented young cornerbacks either. I get the idea of drafting Justin Blackmon here and it’s definitely probable I just don’t think in my heart of hearts it’s the right pick for the Jaguars, even if everyone else in the world does.

This week wasn’t a great week for N.F.L. fans as there were a lot of bad games out there, but some of the games really spoke volumes about different teams. First of all, the Chiefs Clearly do not understand the concept of “suck for Luck”. So they have lost out. The Ravens whooped down the Jaguars, and the Jaguars are just plain ol’ bad. That’s one of the worst situations in the league right there and one of the teams most likely to be hiring a new coach after the season.

33. Me, as a handicapper

My third straight rough week in a row picking N.F.L games vs the spread. I was dominating early in the season, but now I might be slightly lower than .500. I absolutely embarrassed myself on two picks this week. The first really bad pick was thinking the Colts could keep it close vs the Saints. I also thought that the Raiders would cover the spread (4). Speaking of the Raiders…well what can you say. Yikes.

32. Indianapolis Colts (Previously Dolphins)

Obviously they weren’t going to go up in the power rankings. The only question is would they go down. I picked the Colts to cover the hefty spread vs the Saints because I thought this is a veteran team that is going to really play hard on prime-time and until they win a game. Oh well, guess I was wrong. The Colts will probably still win one or two games, but how many votes will Peyton Manning get as M.V.P this year while not even playing a game? He should win M.V.P. every year he plays until he retires if the Colts win 5 games or more. Anyone questioning his greatness now? All I’m saying is Brady out, Patriots go 11-5. Manning misses a season the Colts can’t even score 11 points.

Players

Fred Jackson: Fred Jackson, before the 2011 season, was a solid player. A player coaches believed could rush in tandem with CJ Spiller who would eventually replace him. Well, it is CJ’s second year and there is no way Fred Jackson is giving up his spot. Through five games Fred Jackson has rushed for 480 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also is a big part in the passing game. In fantasy terms he is a weekly starter. Do I believe Jackson will rush for over 1400 yards? Absolutely. Will last all season.

The power rankings below are strictly based off of week one performances. These power rankings should look a lot different once we move later into the season.

Here are the NFL power rankings for week 1:

32 Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs deserve to be the worst team on every single power ranking that comes out today. They got shut down by one of the worst teams in the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The Chiefs offense made the Bills defense looked like the Ravens and the Chiefs defense made the Bills offense look like the Packers. Maybe it’s just the Bills are getting better, but it’s still no excuse for the horrible loss they suffered against them.

31. Indianapolis Colts

You can’t blame Kerry Collins two fumbles for the loss against the Houston Texans on Sunday. More of the loss should be put on the running game and rush defense. They ran the ball for only 64 yards and allowed a player that goes by the name of Ben Tate, not Arian Foster, run for 116 yards and a touchdown.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed backup running back Reshad Jennings on injured reserve.

“A Big Thx to all my Fans for the prays & support. They have decided to place me on IR this yr. I promise i’ll return stronger.” Jennings said on Twitter.

The Jaguars had been hoping to limit Maurice Jones Drew’s carries this year and they seemed to like what Jennings brought to the table. It’ll be interesting to see who the Jaguars rely on now (Deji Karim?) or whether the Jaguars end up just not reducing Maurice Jones Drew’s workload. I don’t know if Jack DelRio is on the hot seat, but the seat is probably warm and it could force him to use MJD as much as has in the past.

First let me say this: I don’t know how many more times I can listen to another conversation between the game announcers about the new kickoff rule. We get it, you don’t like it, get over it.

Now moving on. Unlike the Falcons and Steelers, the Jaguars and Falcons have nplenty of players who will make an impact for the team this year.

I’ll post this now and try to update it live throughout the night and also recap th game a bit when it’s over.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Deji Karim

Very nice return. He hits the hole fast and hard and is making the most of his opportunity tonight. He caught a little screen pass and made some moves to get 26 yards. He looks very explosive.

Cecil Shorts

The rookie out of Mount Union had a reverse opportunity early in the first quarter but fumbled the ball which was recovered by the Falcons. Tony Siragusa commented that Cecil Shorts should have immediately fell on the football once he lost it instead of trying to scoop it up and run with it. The next series he had a nice out patter for 16 yards and a first down and also another 12 yard button hook pass.

Tyson Alualu

Easily the most questionable first round selection last year continues to show that the Jaguars might know a little something, something about scouting. He continues to collapse the pocket (one time that sticks out in my mind is when he forced Matt Ryan into an intentional grounding penalty. Collapsed the pocket a few more times, chased around Matt Ryan quite a bit.

Blaine Gabbert

First series was a three and out. Early in his second series he had a pass deflected at the line which nearly resulted in an interception. He hasn’t gotten off to a great start tonight, though he did have a nice completion on a third down and 10 that resulted in a first down. He held onto the ball for too long and took a sack (Eugene Monroe gave up the sack). Showed of his excellent arm though early and often, could develop into a good N.F.L. player (obviously…that’s why he was drafted in the first round), but probably better that he’ll have at least a year to learn. He struggled with accuracy despite making some nice passes and showing some nice touch on his passes.
