The Indianapolis Colts are the team in the league that is going through the most transition in the N.F.L. They are giving their team a complete make-over. The first thing the Colts did was fire their Front office and replace him with a guy from thePhiladelphia Eagles front office. They then fired Jim Caldwell and hired Chuck Pagano from the Baltimore Ravens. Jim Caldwell was a Tony Dungy disciple. A man who has a calm demeanor and ran a defensive system that was very Tampa two based. Pagano is a firey coach who is closer to Rex Ryan than he is Tony Dungy who comes from a team that runs a 34.

Lastly, the Colts seem likely to release first ballot Hall of Famer (I know that’s a baseball term) Peyton Manning this off-season. To say the Colts are going through a transition would not do the term any justice.

The big question I have is if their new head coach ran a 34 system, how soon will the transition to a 34 come? The Colts expect to be bad this year anyway and they are a team that is filled with aging veterans.

Let’s assume that the Colts decide to switch to the 34 this year, what kind of options could they have in the draft. I think they have enough pieces on offense to be re presentable for this upcoming season, but really need to tweak the defense.

1st round: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford Cardinal

The Colts drafted a pretty good running back prospect last year with Delone Carter and also added two young offensive linemen, they also still have Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, and Dallas Clark so Luck won’t be getting thrown completely into the fire. This is clearly the pick the Colts are making in the first round.

Indianapolis Colts Off Season Check List

2011 Outcome

The 2011 season was over the moment Peyton Manning could not play. Peyton Manning had masked the personnel problems the Colts had. A String of bad drafts had left the Colts vulnerable at offensive line, lack of young play makers on offense, and a defense that was just plain bad. The good news is the Colts won the jackpot with Andrew Luck!!! Now what to do with Manning….stay tuned true believers.

Coach Seat Temperature

The Colts have already fired DC Larry Coyer and now Polian and Son are no longer running the team. Jim Caldwell still has a job but he should not feel too comfortable. I think at the very least OC, Clyde Christensen, gets shown the door andCaldwellgets a new staff. If I had to guess thoughCaldwellis gone.

2011 Draft Class Rating (B)

It is always hard to judge a draft class after one year. That being said there is some hope from this class. Anthony Costanzo and Benjamin Ijalana did not have a great impact in year 1 do to some injuries but should be day 1 starters next season. Drake Nevis showed some flashes of being a solid DT starter and Delone Carter should be a solid rotational RB. Even Chris Rucker showed potential to be a solid depth CB.

Renown General Manager Bill Polian is out as the Indianapolis Colts general manager according to Michael Lombardi. Is this the right move?

I for one think it is. In the summer I wrote an article titled Peyton Manning to miss significant time is Bill Polain Still a Top )Draft) Talent evaluator?

In which I looked at the recent record of Polian and was not impressed

I’ve heard that argument (the one about a consistent playoff team), but I’ve been wavering on that for awhile now and watching the Colts this preseason (or any preseason, or any game Peyton sat after the first series has only piqued my interest in this topic. Is Bill Polian one of the league’s top General Managers because he has a great eye for talent? Or is he one of the leagues luckiest general managers having been blessed with not one, but two Hall of Fame quarterbacks in his tenure as general manager for the Bills and Colts.

The 2012 NFL season is winding down and the playoff picture is becoming clearer every week. Last week I discussed the AFC/NFC North picture. This week we will discuss the disappointing AFC/NFC South conference playoff picture. We will go into remaining schedules and predictions.

AFC South

Indianapolis Colts: The Packers are not the only team striving for perfection. The Colts are trying to achieve a feat that only the 08 Lions were able to do….go 0-16. Currently the Colts are 0-12 and they even brought in the man who was the QB for the Lions during that stretch, Dan Orlovsky. Games versus the Ravens, Titans, and Texans are for sure losses. It will all come down to the last game at Jacksonville for the Colts to win a game this season. Colts are devoid of talent at all levels and Andrew Luck alone will not be able to turn this team around.

Both Tarvaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst aren’t the Seahawks now or in the future. Got to wonder if Pete Carroll is already planning the reunion party since he was the coach at USC during Matt Barkley’s freshman year.

How many times do we see a team or a player exceed expectations in a football game and we think, there is no way that can last. That player is either too young or not that good. That team had an easy week or the ball just bounced that way. Most times it does not last, but every so often those early signs are premonitions of what is to come. In this weekly column we will look at 3 players and 3 teams who jumped out.

Players

Cam Newton: In week1 versus the Cardinals rookie QB Cam Newton threw for 422 yards, 2 touchdowns, and completed about 65 percent of his passes. Newton was in a shortened off season and was a raw passer to begin with. I predict that occasionally he will show off his remarkable talent, but most weeks he will struggle. This is encouraging though and I am starting to eat my words a little. Next week will go along way playing Dom Capers led defense. Will not last, this season.
