Scouting Report

Jeff Demps is flat out one of the fastest men in sports right now, regardless of what level. Demps has Olympic track star speed, and translates that on to the field. Last year, he led the Gators with 551 rushing yards, and is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Demps has 17 career rushing touchdowns, and has averaged 7.5, 7.0, and 6.0 yards per carry throughout his Gators career. He has had some injuries, which have prevented him from being a top tier runner in college football, but he definitely has game-breaking speed and could be a great change of pace back at the next level, and also has potential possibly as a slot wide receiver and return specialist.Demps is the fastest track athlete in college right now (9.85 second 100 meter dash) and could challenge for the fastest recorded 40 yard dash time in the history of the league at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine. Runs really low, which works to his advantage. He’s got a great build for a shorter back at 5’7″ and closing in on 200 pounds. He has elite quickness and while he can be engulfed by defenders at times, he is not easy to track down. Threat to score every time he touches the ball. Turns the corner with ease and can change direction on a dime. His speed is not overrated. He will make your mouth drop when you see some of his runs.

Scouting Report

Very versatile player for the Gators who comes with a long list of red flags. Rainey has been arrested and charged with stalking in his time at Florida, allegedly sending a text to his former girlfriend of three years that said, “Time to die,” and then after she called the police, he allegedly told her to “Wait and see what happens when they [the police] leave.” Coaches declared that Rainey was no longer part of the Florida football team in September last season, but he was given a second chance and enters the season on top of the team’s depth chart at both running back and as a wide receiver. Rainey is a smaller player who can contribute in a multitude of ways thanks to his gift of blazing speed. Rainey is getting all of the reps right now as the starting RB in Charlie Weis’ system with other players nursing injury and the aforementioned Jeff Demps running track, and he says it feels like he’s back in high school again now running out of the I-formation. Watch out for Rainey to have a huge year if he can stay healthy. With Brantley’s struggles at quarterback, the Gators should use their speedy running game to get the offense going, and with two guys in Rainey and Demps who have speed to burn, they could be dangerous. Unfortunately, Rainey has been unable to stay consistent throughout his career, both in terms of his production on the field and his ability to stay away from the injured list. The physical style of play in the SEC has hurt him a bit, but you still want to believe his best case scenario is something like a Darren Sproles type of player, a guy who has proven that he can take some hits in the NFL and utilize his speed in the running game, passing game, or return game.

There is some good NFL News out there, you just have to know where to find it. Here’s what I’ve found around the web.

One under the radar story is that the Eagles may no longer be looking for draft picks for Kevin Kolb and instead could be focused on getting a key veteran in exchange for Kolb to try and finally win the superbowl. According to a tweet from Ross Tucker

ESPN’s Sal Pal on SiriusXM: Eagles think “this is their year”. Mentioned Nnamdi, Haynesworth, J. Babin, 2011 player for Kolb, etc.

I think Nnadmi Asmougha makes a ton of sense for the Eagles. They play in a division with very tough wide recievers, it’s a huge need and they have a ton of cap space. Now, it’s tough to swallow having so much money invested in two cornerbacks (Samuel and Asmougha) but that would definitely allow them to blitz as much as they want to while being able to play man coverage effectively behind the blitz.

Wes Bunting Breaks down the 2012 NFL Draft Class for linebackers

It’s not a huge depth look at linebackers, but this class is worlds better than the 2011 class as it stands now, especially for 43 linebackers. We took a look at the top 25 inside and outside linebackers.

The Miami Dolphins draft was one that addressed many of their needs and could help them reestablish their running game, but was it a good draft, or a case of a team reaching fulfill needs, and a draft they’ll regret three years from now? Let’s take a look at each of the Dolphins picks.

Round 1 pick: Mike Pouncey, G/C, Florida

Mike Pouncey’s draft value was all over the place leading up to the draft with some people I talked to in pre draft interviews having him as low as a middle round pick, and all people claiming that Pouncey was not as good as his brother, yet Mike Pouncey was drafted ahead of his brother to play in the interior of the Dolphins offensive line.

Philosophy B-

I have no problems with teams taking offensive linemen in the first round, in fact it usually makes a lot of sense. If you find a quality offensive linemen that player might start for 10-15 years in the league and be productive. Also offensive linemen provide good positional value. However, with that being said, interior offensive linemen are not as highly valued as Offensive tackles, and in the middle of the first round it’s hard to justify taking an interior offensive linemen who is a project at center and one who won’t play tackle, as opposed to taking a tackle to bookend with Jake Long for the next 10 plus years.

Player Value: C-

I repeatedly said leading up to the draft that I thought Pouncey was one of the most overrated players being discussed as a first round pick. I also preferred The Wiz to Pouncey. I mentioned that I think it’s a mistake to pass up on a potential tackle to take an interior offensive linemen, especially one that I don’t believe is that great in the first place. I think this is both bad positional and player value.
