I’ve wrote articles talking about each of the first 5 teams in this draft and their top 5 options for their picks. Now lets take a look at each team and project who each of them will take in the first part of my 2013 mock draft.

Jan 4, 2013; Arlington, TX, USA; Texas A

1. Kansas City Chiefs — Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M

With the addition of Alex Smith and Chase Daniels to be his backup, drafting Geno Smith seems unlikely. The Chiefs would more than likely love to trade out of this pick, but it’s too hard to predict trades so I’m not going to. The Chiefs franchised Branden Albert, but they let Eric Winston go. Joeckel could come in straight away and start opposite Albert on whichever side they wanted him too.

Nov 3, 2012; Athens, GA, USA; Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Jarvis Jones (29) in the game against the Mississippi Rebels at Sanford Stadium.
The Jaguars pass rush was non-existent last year. They had the least amount of sacks of anyone in the league. Jarvis Jones is a very versatile player who can rush the passer as well as anyone. He can be used much like Von Miller is used in Denver. Jones is very adept at forcing turnovers and getting to the QB. Both things that the Jaguars were really bad at last year.

The Lions were a surprise playoff team in 2011 after going 10-6. They lost to the Saints in the first round but it was a step forward, being their first trip to the playoffs since 1999. However the team took a huge step back this past year, finishing the season 4-12 and earning the 5th pick in the draft. After throwing for 5,000 yards and 41 TD’s in 2011 Staffords numbers came back down drastically. While still throwing for almost 5,000 yards he only had 20 TDs and threw 17 INTs. The offense finished 3rd in the league in yards per game, but only finished 17th in ppg. That was largely to being the 3rd worst in the NFL with a -16 turnover differential. They also had the 5th worst defense in the NFL in points per game.

Oct 20, 2012; Knoxville, TN, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back Dee Milliner (28) breaks up a touchdown pass intended for Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Justin Hunter (11) during the first half at Neyland Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

Dee Milliner – The Lions secondary is really bad. It is probably the biggest weakness of this team. They did resign Chris Houston who would be a very good #2 CB for this team. With the resigning of Louis Delmas and the signing of Glover Quinn, they have a good tandem of safeties if Delmas can stay healthy. Adding Dee Milliner to that secondary will turn what was a weakness last year into one that has a lot of talent this year. Milliner is easily the best CB in the draft and adding him would be a huge when you are in a division with Aaron Rodgers.

Oakland was another team that was really bad last year. McFadden again couldn’t stay healthy for the entire year and when he was healthy wasn’t very effective. The coaching staff changed up their blocking scheme and McFadden never seemed comfortable behind it. They had the 5th least running yards in the entire league. While they had the 8th most passing yards in the league they had the 7th worst scoring offense in the NFL. Oaklands defense was middle of the pack this past year, finishing 15th in yards per game, but they were the 5th worst in points per game. However they released and lost a lot of defensive players in the last few days including Richard Seymour, Michael Huff, Phillip Wheeler and Desmond Bryant. On the bright side Sebastian Janikowski and Shane Lechler were phenomenal as always.

Dec 29, 2012; Bronx, NY, USA; West Virginia Mountaineers quarterback Geno Smith (12) warms up prior to the start of the 2012 New Era Pinstripe Bowl against the Syracuse Orange at Yankee Stadium.
Geno Smith - Carson Palmer was not terrible last year, but he is getting old now and is due 13 million dollars next year. The Raiders are now under the cap, but they had to release a lot of people to get there. They need a lot of players to put even a semi competitive team on the field. Palmer can’t be in the cards for them for much longer and Pryor hasn’t shown anything to make anyone think he can be their QB of the future. The Raiders have also already been linked to wanting Smith with the 3rd pick in the draft.

Scouting Report/Player Notes

Ezekiel Ansah is one of the bigger “boom or bust” potential picks in this year’s NFL Draft. He has only been playing football for a few years, but he has freakish size and raw athletic ability that have NFL scouts drooling. You can see in his dimensions (6’5″ 271) and speed (4.63) that he has the overall look of a dominant defensive end or hybrid linebacker in the NFL, and he is likely destined to be a top 10 selection in April. Ansah obviously needs to be coached up in the NFL, but he is athletic enough that he could surprise some people and have double-digit sacks as a rookie if he puts enough work in. He’s strong (21 reps on bench) and quick off the ball, but he’s not even scratched the surface of his immense potential. He flashes his quickness and speed when you watch him in-game, and he can play sideline to sideline really well which is why I think he’s likely to go to a team that primarily operates out of a 3-4 alignment. When you combine his length and overall upper body strength, he creates problems all over the defensive line. BYU was able to line him up over the nose, as a base end in a 3-4, as well as standing up as a rush linebacker. I think he has the potential to be one of the better picks in this year’s draft if he puts the work in. Otherwise, he’ll just be another athletic track guy who couldn’t hack it with the big boys.

BYU’s Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah may be the hottest prospect in the NFL Draft. He is fast, tall, and athletic, yet he is a risk that teams are going to have to decide if its worth it.

Ansah is freak of an athlete. He is 6’5″, and 274 pounds with an arm length of 34 and five-eighths, and a hand length of 10 inches. Ansah even runs like a track athlete, as in 2010, he walked-on to the BYU track team and ran 21.9 seconds in the 200-meter dash. He was also cut twice from the BYU basketball team.

Ansah is a projected first-round draft pick.

NFL scout and executive Phil Savage says, “I’m thinking that maybe even the top five with the way teams are so desperate to adjust to what they’re doing for all these read-option quarterbacks. You are going to need guys on the defensive line who can chase those guys down.”

CBS Sports NFL Draft expert Rob Rang says, “Ansah compares to Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, New York Giants. Ansah is not the same terror-off-the-edge pass-rusher that Pierre-Paul was coming out of South Florida, but he’s similarly gifted and plays with greater commitment to the run. Like there was with Pierre-Paul, there is some risk factor with Ansah, but his upside is through the roof.”

Ansah finished 2012 with 62 total tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, one interception, and nine pass defenses.

In the Senior Bowl, Ansah shined, recording seven tackles, including three and a half for loss (one and a half for sacks), and a forced fumble off Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib.

Ansah has played several positions while at BYU, a stand-up rush linebacker, a defensive end, and nose guard. Ansah is a type of player that can create mismatches and has flexibility.

Perhaps, the biggest questions surrounding Ansah, is his experience. Coming into 2012, he had just zero career starts and 10 total tackles.
