Jerry Jones, general manager and owner of the Dallas Cowboys will have important offseason decisions to make regarding the linebacker positions on Rob Ryan’s coached defense.

Far from the famed Doomsday defenses of old that previously ran rampant and created chaos for NFC opponents, the 2011Dallas defense did very little to live up to the historical prowess of yesteryear’s dominating defensive squads.

With the lone exception of Abram Elam, it appeared that early on in the 2011 campaign, Rob Ryan seemingly made strides with identical defensive personel that yielded the 2nd highest passer rating on average to opposing quarterbacks in 2010 behind the Buffalo Bills.

How could fans expect dramatic changes between seasons when everything remained the same defensively with the exceptions of Ryan and Elam?

Well this year things have to change and some of those changes will be forced changes due to the Cowboys NFC foes getting faster offensively and contracts expiring, especially at the linebacker position.

Dallas Cowboys off Season Check List

2011 Outcome (8-8)

The Cowboys were supposed to be in the playoffs and contending for a Super Bowl…well at least according to Jerry Jones and his non-realistic image of the Cowboys. The hiring of Garrett as HC and than Rob Ryan as DC would be the coaching duo to put the Cowboys over the top. An 8-8 season was disappointing but also should have been expected. With a young OL and a porous defense this team’s personnel needs to be improved this off season.

Coach Seat Temperature

1 year in and Garrett is already feeling the pressure. Jerry Jones is not an ideal owner/GM to work for. I think he picked Garrett because Jones would be allowed total control over the team. If Garrett does not get the Cowboys into the post season next season he should start printing out his resumes. DC Rob Ryan did not have a great 1st year with the team and needs to work on getting more out of his unit.

The New York Giants don’t like to do anything easy. The game seemed all, but over after a blown coverage resulted in a huge 50 yard touchdown pass from Tony Romo to Dez Bryant. But somehow, someway the Giants came back to beat the Dallas Cowboys 37-34. The Giants defense has struggled all season, but if you didn’t know Jason Pierre Paul is a Stud. Collinsworth praised Paul so much throughout the game I was half-expecting a wedding proposal.

Eli Manning had another come from behind victory his sixth of the season. He also threw for 400 yards with two touchdowns. Eli Manning has now gone for over 4,000 yards in a season with twenty touchdowns three seasons in a row. A feat not accomplished by legendary names like Tom Brady and Brett Favre.

It wasn’t pretty, the Giants defense gave up way too many big plays. The offense had too many unsuccessful trips in the Red-zone, but they came through.

Jason Pierre Paul was a man amongst boys. Collinsworth described him as an “octopus” and also said “if Jason Pierre Paul is not in the pro bowl an investigation should be launched”,.

For the game Jason Pierre Paul had six tackles, 2 sacks, one which resulted in a safety. Pierre Paul also forced a fumble at the end of the second half deep in Cowboys territory. To top if off Pierre Paul blocked the final field goal attempt. An attempt that occurred after a successful kick was nullified by the Giants icing the kicker.

The Cowboys squandered other opportunities as well. On third down, Miles Austin was open by 12 yards but Romo over threw the ball.
What a terrific fantastic game.

Quarterback: Tony Romo against New York Giants

I’m not going to go into the back-ups here because A no one wants to see that and B) no one wants to see that!. Eli Manning and Tony Romo are having remarkably similar years.

Because of that this argument comes down to three factors:

Career numbers, career accomplishments, clutch

Career Numbers:

Both Eli Manning and Tony Romo have had their struggles in December before so I think that’s a wash.

Tony Romo has better career numbers than Eli Manning that’s not even really arguable. Even though Eli Manning provided he stays healthy this week and next week is going to surpass 4,000 yards for the third straight year, something that very few players in the N.F.L. have ever done (not Tom Brady, and not Brett Favre either). I give this edge to Tony Romo still.

Tonight the 6-6 New York Giants travel to Dallas to take on the 7-5 Dallas Cowboys. What has been a down season for both clubs can turn around in an instant on Sunday. If the New York Giants win they will tie the Cowboys record wise and be in good position to take the division title home. With games remaining against the Redskins, Jets, and Cowboys. The Dallas Cowboys have games remaining with the better-than-their-record-indicates Philadelphia Eagles, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The only way either team can assure the division title is to beat the other is to sweet the season series.

There are a lot of story lines to watch for including: Who is the better quarterback (Giants fans will take Eli Manning and the Cowboys fans are going to side with their man Tony Romo. But those stories, to me, are secondary. I like to focus on the development of the young players here at NFLmocks. Here’s what to watch for.

Justin Tuck vs Tyron Smith

In the games I’ve watched this year I’ve been impressed with the play of the #9 overall pick. He’s a bit lean, but he’s long with huge hands and a powerful motor. He’ll be lining up against a rapidly improving Justin Tuck, who has battled injuries all season, but finally looks to be getting back to his old-self. Tuck is one of the best two way defensive ends in the game and can really ruin an offensive game plan if he’s on. Smith will have to bring his A game to contain Tuck.

Jason Pierre Paul vs Doug Free

On one side the Cowboys will have their young OL going up against the Giants experienced Dl. On the other side the Cowboys have their experienced offensive linemen going up against the Giants young defensive end. Jason Pierre Paul has been the Giants best defender this year in a pro-bowl worth year (though he’s not officially on the ballot). Pierre Paul has 10.5 sacks, but even that doesn’t tell the whole story. He bats as many balls down at the line of scrimmage as any other defensive linemen in the league (personal opinion not rooted in facts) and can also pay the run. Last year against the Cowboys Pierre Paul two total tackles in two games, but the Cowboys faced him early in the season. Since week 12 of lat year Pierre Paul has 15 sacks (18 games).

There are a few games on Sunday that are of the utmost importance for playoff positoning, but the game between the Buffalo Bills and the Dallas Cowboys could be the most important, especially for the Bills. The Buffalo Bills are sitting at 5-3 tied with the New York Jets and the New England Patriots for first place in the A.F.C. East. Lose this game and the Bills go to 5-4 having lose three of their last four games. They could go into a tail-spin. Win this game and they go to 6-3 with a date next week in Miami (and the Dolphins are terrible at home), which could be enough to get them to their first playoff apperance in ages.

The Cowboys are currently two games behind the New York Giants a loss could push them to three games behind the Giants with only 7 games left to play, a seemingly nearly insurmountable lead with the two playoff wild cards likely coming from the South (Falcons or Saints) and the North (fthe Lions or Bears), this could be the game that breaks the Cowboys backs for the playoffs.

Here are some things to watch for in today’s game.

The Dallas Cowboys are a team that has a realistic shot at makings the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean that they are without plenty of room for improvement. Let me know what you think in the comments.

And also check out our updated scouting report page (more than 70 scouting reports)

1st round Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

Dennard has missed a lot this season (early) because of an injury, but he is rounding back into the form last season that had many people wondering whether or not Dennard was the elite cornerback on the Cornhuskers and not 2011 first round pick Prince Amukamaraa. Dennard would provide some much needed talent to the Cowboys secondary and represent value if he was available around 20th where the Cowboys could end up picking.

2nd round Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin

Wide receiver doesn’t seem to be a huge need or the Cowboys, but it is an underrated need. Dez Bryant and Miles Austin play so physical they are going to miss time every year with injuries and it’s not like the depth at the WR position for the Cowboys is amazing. I also think the Cowboys will look first and foremost to get good value with their second round pick. This is where Toon comes in. I don’t think Toon is a number one wide receiver in the N.F.L. but he can be a nice number two option, and with the surrounding talent the Cowboys have he’ll make some plays.
