Atlanta Falcons
Grade: C-
Players: 1st Sean Weatherspoon- LB- Missouri, 3rd Corey Peters- DT- Kentucky, 3rd Mike Johnson- OG- Alabama, 4th Joseph Hawley- OG- UNLV, 5th Dominique Franks- CB- Oklahoma, 5th Kerry Meier- WR- Kansas, 5th Shann Schillinger- S- Montana
Thoughts: This isn’t the flashyiest of drafts but the Falcons addressed needs and added depth. Sean Weatherspoon should start from day 1 and is an immediate upgrade. He is a tackling machine that brings athleticism to the linebacking core. Corey adds beef to the defensive line rotation and Mike Johnson has depth and insurance against injury. Dominique Franks was a good value [...]
NFC West
Arizona Cardinals
Grade: B+
Players: 1st Dan Williams-NT-Tennessee, 2nd Daryl Washington-LB-TCU, 3rd Andre Roberts-WR- Citadel, 4th O’Brien Schofield-DE-Wisconsin, 5th John Skelton-QB-Fordham, 6th Jorrick Calvin-CB-Troy, 7th Jim Dray-TE-Stanford
Thoughts: With a combination of luck, patience, and preparation the Cardinals had an excellent draft. They were able to sit tight at 26 while top fifteen talent Dan Williams fell into their lap. Williams was the only legitimate NT prospect in the draft and one of the Cardinals’ primary needs heading in to the draft, so it was a home run on need and value. The Cardinals also filled a need [...]
Quarterbacks on the Board
The big name quarterbacks are all off the board. Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy remained available longer than most suspected, but they finally found a home and both seem to be in situations where they will have every chance to succeed.
In a passing league, where the quarterback is arguably the most important position on a team, teams are always on the lookout for a second, or from now on third day, pick who may be that diamond in the rough. Tom Brady was a sixth round pick. Kurt Warner was not even drafted. Both are [...]
Stanford Does it Again (and so does USC)
A week after defeating an Oregon team ranked in the top 10, the Cardinal put a whooping on another top 10 team. This time, the victim was Southern Cal.
Stanford got off to an early 14-0 lead and had a 21-7 lead at halftime. Southern Cal made some big plays in the third quarter to cut the lead to just 28-21, but, Stanford dominated the final quarter, outscoring the Trojans 27-0 in route to a 55-21 victory.
Stanford has moved in the top 20 and is arguably the hottest team in the nation. Meanwhile, Southern [...]
