This 2012 NFL mock draft will focus on the Buffalo Bills, a team that that I believe now holds the longest playoff drought in the National Football League with the Lions apperance in the playoffs this past season. The Bills struggles are directly linked to the lack of a franchise quarterback they have been able to acquire. They seem content moving forward with Ryan Fitzpatrick, but they have some needs. I”m also making a new 2012 NFL Mock draft for the Buffalo Bills because the team is switching to 43 defense reportedly despite spending the last two years and drafts adding talent for a 34 defense which makes the last two years moot. The bright side is the Bills have some natural fits up front in the 43 defense.

Buffalo Rumblings broke down the move here, there are a few players who benefit from this move. First is Chris Kelsay who was completely out of place in the 34 defense where he had to play in too much space, even though the Bills love him, he’s an average every-down player to begin with and will get back to being average in the 43.

Kyle Williams, Marcel Dareus, and Torrel Troup are in a good position to make a lot more plays as 43 Defensive tackles.

Buffalo Bills off Season Check List

2011 Outcome (6-10)

The Buffalo Bills came roaring out the gate and started the season 5-2. The Bills signed Fitzpatrick to a costly extension andBuffalofans were talking post season. The Bills would lose 8 of the next 9 games. Fitzpatrick’s lack of arm strength was exposed, the lack of weapons doomed the offense, and the lack of a pass rush made the defense toothless. The Bills have some major improvements to make in 2012 if they are to start lessoning the gap between them and the Patriots.

Coach Seat Temperature

Gailey will get one more year to show he belongs. The Bills did show improvements in year 2 of his tenure but injuries hurt and the lack of depth doomed their season. It is unknown if the Bills will retain OC, Curtis Modkins, and/or DC, George Edwards, due to the lack of productivity. I would think with the plethora of good young DC possibilities the Bills might want to upgrade the DC spot.

Everyone once in awhile instead of doing my own mock drafts, which I do frequently enough I like to look around the web at some other mock drafts and pinpoint certain teams to see what kind of trends are developing. Today the team I’ll be looking is the Buffalo Bills. The Bills started the season strong, but were unable to withstand injuries and struggled until the final month of the season where they beat the Broncos and played ok vs the Patriots. The major problems with the Bills to me are a lack of down field threats to spread the field on offense. A pass rusher. Offensive line talent (though it’s better than year’s past), and mostly an a sever need for depth at all positions. Franchise QB is also important.

The Bills will pick 10th in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Drafttek.com Selection: Iowa T, Riley Reiff

Reasoning:

Reiff declared for the draft this week, securing his spot as Kiper’s seventh-best prospect and second best lineman, agreeing with most mocksters. Jury’s still out on free-agent Demetrius Bell, who has had one injury-free season in four years, and last year’s 4th-rounder, Chris Hairston, who got toasted by DE Mark Anderson of the Pats in week 17. Bills fans swooned over Bryan Bulaga last year, and would welcome Bulaga’s successor at Iowa as a mainstay at LT. What impresses me about Reiff is his excellent use of hands, fast footwork, wide base and leverage, impressive balance, and a fight-to-the-finish ethic. The only thing that worries me with Reiff’s selection is the scarcity of top-shelf defensive pass rushers in this draft, and going OT in the first round effectively limits the Bills’ choice at a their #1 position of need. It defaults the Bills to finding their pass rusher in free agency (Mario Williams, anyone?). – Dean Kindig, Drafttek.com Bills Analyst

Every week I take a look at a few teams and pick out some interesting aspects of the game, while trying to focus on first and second year players, and if you’re like me and enjoy watching the young guys you’re in luck because the Titans and Bills are going to play a lot of them.

Marcell Dareus vs Chris Johnson/Javon Ringer

Of Course Dareus won’t actually be lined up against Chris Johnson and Javon Ringer, but it will be Dareus job to clog the middle of the field to help contain the Titans run game. Chris JOhnson is picking up steam the last few weeks of the season, finally getting stuff together. The Bills are 21st against the run and if Dareus can’t collapse the middle, the Bills could be in for a long day.

Win this game and they go to 6-3 with a date next week in Miami (and the Dolphins are terrible at home), which could be enough to get them to their first playoff apperance in ages.

The Cowboys are currently two games behind the New York Giants a loss could push them to three games behind the Giants with only 7 games left to play, a seemingly nearly insurmountable lead with the two playoff wild cards likely coming from the South (Falcons or Saints) and the North (fthe Lions or Bears), this could be the game that breaks the Cowboys backs for the playoffs.

Here are some things to watch for in today’s game.

The Halfway point is officially upon us for all of the teams except for the few who have played all 9 weeks. It’s time to hand out some Hardware. To go along with that, in part because I’ve been inspired by Mocking the Drafts all rookie team (gotta keep up with the Jones), I’m also going to give out my all rookie team.

Excuse the first few awards as they are completely made up awards.

“Hey Look My contract was not completely ridiculous”

Charles Johnson-Carolina Panthers

The Panthers wanted to pay a premium for a pass rusher. And they did. Charles Johnson has 7 sacks already this year and has shown that the Panthers might nave known what they were doing with him.

Antithesis of this award-Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee Titans

Worst Loss of the season

The New York Giants losing at home vs the Seattle Seahawks

This might eventually cost the Giants a playoff appearance. That could not have been a worse loss. A lot of people lost their survivor pool on that one.

Best Win-Rams’ beat down of the Saints

My Arse is on Fire Award (given to the coach who has lasted the longest on the hottest seat)

Tony Sporano-Miami Dolphins

Now onto some real awards

Offensive player of the year

Fred Jackson, RB, Buffalo Bills

Full disclosure, I wanted to go away from a quarterback here. The little running back no one wanted out of Coe college has been the biggest surprise of the year this season. Behind an average Buffalo Bills line Jackson has rushed for 803 yards (at 5.4 yards per carry) for 6 touchdowns and also chipped in another 391 yards through the air. Jackson has only been in the league five years, but is already thirty years old because of the circuitous route he took to the N.F.L., which is perhaps why the Bills haven’t given him a contract extension this year. Jackson shows us that in this day and age with all of the fancy passing attacks, running the ball is still effective.

Runner up: LeSean McCoy, Eagles

There hasn’t been this much excitement for a Buffalo Bills home game in some time (perhaps the Monday Night game vs the Dallas Cowboys) as the 5-2 Bills will host the 4-3 Jets in a game that could really be for the playoffs. If the Bills win they will be 6-2 with very winnable games left vs the Dolphins (two of them), Denver, and the Titans. They also play the Patriots, Cowboys, Jets again, and Chargers.

If the Jets lose this game they will be 4-4 with games still left vs the Patriots, Buffalo Again, the suddenly good Kansas City Chiefs, the Eagles, the Giants. And very winnable games vs the Dolphins (1), Denver and the Redskins.

The Jets are 3-1 under Rex Ryan.

Here are somethings to watch for, with a slight focus on the rookies and young guys. The Bills have two big losses for this game NT Kyle Williams, their best defensive player and Demetrius Bell their starting LT.

Aaron Maybin/Calvin Pace vs Chris Hairston

One of the big losses for the Bills on Sunday is Starting LT Demetrius Bell. He will be replaced by rookie Chris Hairston who did a solid job vs Jason Pierre Paul and Osi Umeinyora before he was hurt in the Bills lost to the Giants. Aaron Maybin has been rejuvenated playing for the New York Jets with three sacks on the season (three more than he had the entire time he was with the Buffalo Bills). The Jets have figured out how to use Maybin in space and just let him use his speed to chase the quarterback. The Jets don’t really have a pass rush outside of Maybin and Pace, who both lead the team with 3 sacks. It doesn’t help that the Jets use a lot of different blitzes.

It’s not quite that time of year where everything has fallen into place, but it’s fast approaching. There are still a lot of players that could return to school, and a lot of players that are going to see meteoric rises during the pre-draft process, but even with that in mind I thought I’d take a stab at a few full team 7 round mock drafts over the next couple of weeks.

The Buffalo Bills have the standard 7 picks (one from each round) plus a conditional 6th round pick (Marshawn Lynch trade) and a 4th round pick (Lee Evans trade).

Let’s assume the Bills are picking around 20th. I’m also going to use Chris Ransom’s (NFLmocks writers) Top 200 big board to create a value for players

1st round pick: Brandon Jenkins, OLB, FSU

Sunday could be a real rough day for Bills fans if Aaron Maybin has any success at all vs the Bills it’ll just be salt on the wound for a player many Bills fans thought was the biggest bust in Bills history. Maybin did nothing with the Bills, but has been putting a good amount of pressure on the Quarterback this year.

In any case, Jenkins is a player that could be what the Bills hope they had with Aaron Maybin. I must admit though despite the fans belief that this position must be addressed, I’m not convinced that the Bills don’t believe that Danny Batten and Arthur Moats will be that kind of player. Are they right? Jenkins is the pick.
