2012 NFL Mock Draft: Mock the Mocks Buffalo Bills

Michael Floyd Has Character Concerns, but is often dominant on the field and has shown up big in big games

Everyone once in awhile instead of doing my own mock drafts, which I do frequently enough I like to look around the web at some other mock drafts and pinpoint certain teams to see what kind of trends are developing. Today the team I’ll be looking is the Buffalo Bills. The Bills started the season strong, but were unable to withstand injuries and struggled until the final month of the season where they beat the Broncos and played ok vs the Patriots. The major problems with the Bills to me are a lack of down field threats to spread the field on offense. A pass rusher. Offensive line talent (though it’s better than year’s past), and mostly an a sever need for depth at all positions. Franchise QB is also important.

The Bills will pick 10th in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Drafttek.com Selection: Iowa T, Riley Reiff

Reasoning:

Reiff declared for the draft this week, securing his spot as Kiper’s seventh-best prospect and second best lineman, agreeing with most mocksters. Jury’s still out on free-agent Demetrius Bell, who has had one injury-free season in four years, and last year’s 4th-rounder, Chris Hairston, who got toasted by DE Mark Anderson of the Pats in week 17. Bills fans swooned over Bryan Bulaga last year, and would welcome Bulaga’s successor at Iowa as a mainstay at LT. What impresses me about Reiff is his excellent use of hands, fast footwork, wide base and leverage, impressive balance, and a fight-to-the-finish ethic. The only thing that worries me with Reiff’s selection is the scarcity of top-shelf defensive pass rushers in this draft, and going OT in the first round effectively limits the Bills’ choice at a their #1 position of need. It defaults the Bills to finding their pass rusher in free agency (Mario Williams, anyone?). – Dean Kindig, Drafttek.com Bills Analyst

Buffalo Bills vs Cincinnati Bengals: What to Watch For

Today, two franchises heading in different directions meet up in Cincinnati in a game that could put the Bills in the best position they have been in years. With the Patriots playing out in Oakland and the Jets playing in Baltimore it is possible with a win that the Bills could be two games up on both the Patriots and Jets. Even if the Patriots and Jets win, the Bills can move to 4-0. The Buffalo Bills will face the rookie QB Andy Dalton.

We here at NFLmocks are always most interested in the young players so let’s take a look at some of the key matchups for the young guys. And because the Bills and Bengals have been so lousy recently, there are a lot of high draft picks competing in this game.

Fred Jackson (and the young Bills Oline) vs the Young Bengals front

The Bengals defense really has a very good young emerging group in the front seven. Michael Johnson has shown some of the same inconsistency that plauged him in college and cost him a first round pick, but besides him the Bengals are also starting second year DT Geno Atkins. Carlos Dunlap also gets a lot of snaps even though he doesn’t start. Last year he ended the season with 9.5 sacks. This year he has yet to register a sack, but it’s coming. This year is a big year for Rey Maualuga. The Bengals want to see more consistency and production from him as well.

The Bills also have a few young players at key positions on the offensive line, especially in the middle where they play Andy Levitre and Eric Wood. The Bills offensive line looks much improved even from last year. This is always the key matchup in every game, but I’m interested to see which young players play well this weekend.

The Buffalo Bills haven’t been a very successful franchise recently, but that doesn’t mean that they are devoid of offensive talent that can help out your fantasy football team.

The key for Buffalo is to be able to stop the run better on defense to give their offense more opportunities. They have focused on that aspect in the draft, will it pay off?

Quarterback

Whether or not Ryan Fitzpatrick should be a starting quarterback for a hopefully playoff team is debatable. Whether or not he’s worth a flier as a starting fantasy quarterback in a deep fantasy league or a backup quarterback for spot starts shouldn’t be. Last year in 13 games, Fitzpatrick threw for 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns. On top of that he added in 269 rushing yards. That’s not great, but a full season of those kind of numbers would be roughly 3700 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, which could make him a near top 10 fantasy quarterback. Buy in on Ryan Fitzpatrick. Chan Gailey has succeed in his career with a good passing game and the Bills have decent wide receivers and running backs who can catch the football.

I’m not a Bills fan, but my wife is and I do live in Rochester, NY so I watch every Bills game. And I’m going to give the Bills a blueprint to finally make it back to the playoffs, soon!

I wrote one mock draft for the Bills on February 15th, but since then a lot has changed so here’s the second edition of the Buffalo Bills mock draft.

I’m going to use CBS Big Board to create a round value. To, me the Bills can not win a Super Bowl with Ryan Fitzpatrick, but they don’t need to, what they need to do is make the playoffs. Let’s start there with the Bills. Let’s end this very long draught.

In order to do that the Bills are going to have to be able to improve their defense, they have some nice young talent on offense, but the defense leads a lot to be desired.

When I did this for the Giants I also included Free Agency, but the Bills aren’t likely to go out and spend big in Free Agency in most cases, and I was also hoping that the end of the CBA mess was in nearing, but it apparently is not. So I’m just going to stick with the draft part of it now. Maybe I’ll add free agency when a new CBA is agreed upon by the NFLPA* and the Owners. I’m also going to assume that most of the QB are off the board by the beginning of the second round.

1st Round pick #3-Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

There are four most talked about picks here. QB (Newton/Gabbert), Dareus, Peterson, and Miller. I love Von Miller’s explosive first step and he could finally be the pass rusher the Bills desperately need and he could be the pick, but based on this draft there will be a good pass rusher available at the top of the second round. On top of that, one of the Bills biggest weakness is stopping the run, and Von Miller isn’t the greatest run stopper and a huge part of the Bills porous defense is run stopping. Another problem the Bills have had is getting first round draft picks who contribute regularly. Patrick Peterson is our #1 rated prospect and can play at CB or Safety and also has excellent punt return ability. I think, Miller or Peterson are good picks for the Bills.

1. Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton, Quarterback, Auburn

Cam Newton is Still the Top Pick

The Panthers have shown a clear interest in Cam Newton to this point, there’s no question about it. As we head into a new year with hopefully a new CBA, the investment in Newton will not be anywhere near as high as say, a guy like JaMarcus Russell. It will still cost Carolina a pretty penny to take on this project, but it’s clear that they are not sold on Jimmy Clausen going forward, and while he had his moments as a first year quarterback, he certainly didn’t inspire confidence. Newton isn’t perfect, but he’s got pretty much every physical attribute you look for in an NFL quarterback, and he has a swagger about him that NFL teams will love.
