Scouting Report/Player Notes

Intriguing speed rusher with good size and strength. Really looked the part at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine. Came out after a down junior season where he had just 5.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss, which confused a lot of people. Didn’t live up to the hype after a standout sophomore campaign, but the potential is definitely still there for this guy, he just needs to get to an NFL camp with some good coaching. I think at his best, Lemonier could be a guy who can develop into a double-digit sack rush linebacker in a 3-4 defense. At worst, he’s a rotational guy who will bounce around the league for a while. As long as you have the kind of athletic ability that makes scouts drool, you’ll have a home in the league somewhere. Lemonier has that in spades.

The Auburn Tigers had a late comeback vs the South Carolina Gamecocks to beat them 16-3 in the end. The Game was back and forth and was a fun game to watch, what was more impressive to watch is South Carolina’s DE Melvin Ingram. On a field littered with first round talent (South Carolina’s Alshon Jeffrey, Stephon Gilmore, and Marcus Lattimore are all likely going to be first round picks over the next two years), 6’2 276 pound DL Melvin Ingram shined the brightest.

Ingram was virtually unblockable when he was rushing the passer tonight. He was applying constant pressure throughout the game, he sacked the quarterback a copious times (official defensive stats aren’t available yet at the time of this writing) but the stats that are being thrown around there are 9 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and an interception. He also pressured the quarterback multiple times, and even had an interception an a trick field goal play. Ingram has been making a name for himself this year and twitter was all abuzz with his performance today.

CAM NEWTON

HT: 6’ 5” WT: 250LBS

40 TIME: 4.53

ARM STRENGTH: Possesses an absolute cannon for an arm. Has the ability to fit the ball in between tight coverage and can throw the ball a mile with just a flick of the wrist. Consistently throws the ball with velocity and has excellent ball rotation on his throws.

GRADE: 19 OUT OF 20

ACCURACY & THROWING MECHANICS: Newton has a smooth delivery and a quick release. Shows decent touch, but not on a consistent basis. Occasionally overthrows receivers, and misses open targets, but his overall completion percentage has managed to stay above 60%

GRADE: 17 OUT OF 20

FOOTWORK & MOBILITY: Newton combines his 4.5 speed with a 6’ 5” 250lbs frame which is a deadly combination. Newton is able to escape pressure, break tackles, stiff arm pass rushers, and still get the pass off. As a ball carrier, on numerous occasions, he will lower his shoulder on defenders as he is capable of trucking linebackers and simply dismantling defensive backs in the open field. Without a doubt, he adds a whole other dimension to the offense that opposing defenses have to account for.

GRADE: 19 OUT OF 20

STATISTICAL PRODUCTION: This past season Newton threw for over 2800 yards and 30 td’s with only 7 int’s. His rushing stats were equally impressive: 1285 yards rushing with 20 td’s. His production last year was outstanding, but he only has one season of numbers to go by.

GRADE: 17 OUT OF 20

INTANGIBLES: Cam Newton’s past indiscretions are well documented. A number of red flags have been raised such as the accusations of theft and alleged academic cheating while at Florida, and most notably, the alleged actions of his father during his recruitment out of junior college. Despite the negatives, no one can deny Newton’s ability to transform a program into an immediate winner. After transferring from Florida he led Blinn Junior College to the NJCAA Championship. From there, he joined what had been an above average Auburn team, playing in the toughest conference in college football, and led them to a National Championship. In order to be successful at the next level, he will not be able to simply rely on his natural abilities. His devotion to film study, and his overall football IQ will be make or break for him at the next level. What will be his learning curve? At Auburn, Newton ran a very explosive offense, but not one that translates very well to the pro level. One thing working in his favor; he had to learn three different offenses during his college tenure and he seemed to have very little trouble adjusting.

GRADE: 15 OUT OF 20

OVERALL GRADE: 87

The Auburn University pro day is set for Tuesday afternoon, and we already have had two A-list guests RSVP: Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera and John Elway of the Denver Broncos. Whether or not Elway will be in attendance is still in question, but he noted on his official Twitter page that the Broncos would indeed be there.

In all likelihood, they will not be the only ones there. You can probably expect 30 or more teams to show up to Auburn’s pro day, as they have quite a few players who will by vying for spots on teams this year, and a handful of very good athletes. Theoretically, they could have the top two players selected in the draft in quarterback Cam Newton and defensive tackle Nick Fairley.

Sun-sentinel.com

Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn.

Yes, this is my first projected pick in my first mock draft on NFLMocks.com, believe it or not. While Newton failed to wow many scouts during individual drills at the combine in Indianapolis, the former Auburn quarterback will again provide the Panthers a look at what kind of athletic individual he is at his pro day on March 8. As we move closer to the end of April, Panthers brass will give into the hype surrounding Newton and will make him the third consecutive quarterback to go No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft.

2. Denver Broncos: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU.

Even with the resigning of CB Champ Bailey in Denver, there will still be a need in the secondary. With a cornerback like Peterson (6’0”, 219 lbs.), who is arguably the best defensive prospect in the draft on the board, first-time head coach John Fox would be getting an athletic playmaker. Peterson ran a blazing 4.34 forty time at the combine, showing straight-line speed is not an issue for him (not like anyone was questioning). I also would not be shocked to see Denver take a defensive linemen at No. 2 with how deep the position is this year.

3. Buffalo Bills: Marcell Dareus, DT/DE, Alabama

While it may not be the most stylish pick in the draft, Buffalo needs some serious upgrades for their defense that finished last in the league defending the run. Dareus is a force inside at 319 lbs. and has the athleticism to shed blockers and get to the ball. While there are many other prospects worthy of the third round pick, the Bills would be getting a solid player they could count on to stop teams from running down their throats.
