Courtney Upshaw Might be the Best 34 OLB prospect in this draft

We here at NFLmocks are huge fans of the nfl draft. No game this bowl season has had the wealth of prospects, especially ond defense that the National Championship Game provides. Yesterday I took a look at the Alabama Offensive linemen and LSU Tigers defensive linemen who will play in the N.F.L. in the next two (or three as many are redshirt sophomores).

This morning want to take a look at another position that has a ton of talented prospects, and that is the Alabama Crimson Tide Linebacker corps. Sayre will have more on this game today as well.

The Crimson Tide have an excellent linebacker corps, the best in the nation led in the middle by Dont’a Hightower.

In the 2010 College Football season Hightower was a bit banged up and struggled at times, but this year he has been terrific for the most part and worked himself back into the first round conversation. Hightower is a very smart football player who will be responsible for making a ton of checks for the defense in this game. Hightower also has terrific size for a linebacker at 6’4 260 pounds. Hightower is extremely aggressive and physical and can play any number of spots in any number of defenses at the N.F.l. level. The thing that scouts will need to be sure of on Hightower are two fold: first can he play sideline to sideline in the N.F.L? Does he have the necessary speed and agility? And second. Will his body hold up? If so, Hightower should be drafted before the end of round two. On the season Hightower has 89 tackles, 9.5 TFL and 3 sacks.

Today’s Arkansas and and LSU game has a lot of talent on display, sure it means something much greater to college football fans than draft fans because there are serious National Championship implications resting on this game, but there is also an important draft matchup to watch. The talented LSU Secondary vs the Arkansas passing game.

LSU has a ton of talent on both sides of the ball, but a lot of their talent is young and likely to return back to school next year. Arkansas could have some of it’s players return as well, but there is a lot of talent that could be available for this year’s draft, especially at the skill position players.

Arkansas Quarterack Tyler Wilson has had a huge season this year and if returns (which is likely) he could compete to be a first round draft pick next year.

Obviously, Alabama has home field advantage in this game, arguably a more talented defense overall, a more veteran team, and you could make a case that their quarterback is playing better football.

That will be hard to do since LSU senior signal caller Jarrett Lee has thrown seven touchdowns and no interceptions in the month of October. Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron threw six touchdowns compared to only one interception, and also added two more touchdowns on the ground.

LSU Tigers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide Matchup Preview: CB Morris Claiborne vs. RB Trent Richardson - NFL Mocks - NFL Mocks - Covering the 2012 NFL draft, Mock Draft Database, Scouting Reports, and Fantasy Football

One of the more intriguing matchups is going to be how LSU wide receiver Rueben Randle fares against a tough cornerback in Alabama’s Dre’ Kirkpatrick.

Kirkpatrick is considered by many to be the best (potentially) available cornerback in the 2012 draft class, while Randle was one of the best players if not the best player coming out of his high school class. Obviously, I feel like Randle hasn’t performed to his potential–up until this season.

The 6’4″ 210 pound playmaker has already tied his career high with 33 receptions, and has set a career mark with 638 yards, seven touchdowns, and 19.3 yards per catch.
