USC Quarterback Matt Barkley Contemplating Return for Senior Season

“I think finishing out on a good note here at USC was something I wanted to do, and now that we’ve done that, there’s a chance for my future to be financially secure, to move on. There’s a couple reasons but it almost seems like the reasons to stay might outweigh those [to leave] with all the guys coming back. Both sides, I look at it and it almost seems to good to be true,” Barkley said on Sportscenter.

As of right now, the star quarterback from USC characterizes his decision to leave for the NFL in 2012 as “50-50,” and I think at this point, he is genuinely torn about whether or not he should come back.

The junior had a stellar 2011 campaign, passing for 3,528 yards, 39 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions. There is no question in my mind right now that if he were to enter the draft, he would undoubtedly be gone within the first five to ten picks, and possibly even the first or second player selected overall.

Washington Huskies Head Coach Says He’d Take Matt Barkley Over Andrew Luck

Well, I think it’s safe to say this is the first time I have heard or ready anything like this:

“If I’m an NFL head coach right now, I’d pick Matt Barkley ahead of Andrew Luck.”

Those are the words of Washington Huskies head coach Steve Sarkisian, who helped recruit Barkley to USC back when he was an assistant there.

It’s an interesting debate, really. Barkley hasn’t completed over 71 percent of his passes like Luck has, but he’s completed 67 percent and has two more touchdown tosses. That being said, Barkley has about two games worth more attempts than Luck, largely due to the fact that Stanford’s running game is far better than USC’s.

USC Quarterback Matt Barkley Shines Against Weak Colorado Team, Sets USC Passing Record

Matt Barkley threw a USC record six touchdown passes against the Colorado Buffaloes in the Trojans’ 42-17 victory in Boulder on Friday night.

Simply put, Barkley has looked and played like a top five draft pick over the course of this season, and on a national stage the last two weeks. He looks like an NFL quarterback out there picking apart opposing defenses, and while he still has plenty to learn he is the type of guy that is going to come in to the NFL next season (or 2013 if he chooses the BCS over the NFL) and make an instant impact.

In my opinion, Barkley is a much better prospect than USC quarterbacks before him like Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, and most recently, Mark Sanchez. He has excellent mechanics, moxie, and is a good athlete. He’s a smart kid who is always improving.

It was truly a Saturday night to remember.

The USC Trojans had a seven point lead on Andrew Luck and the Stanford Cardinal, and the way their defense had been pressuring the quarterback, it seemed like a win was within reach.

Not so fast, my friends.

Stanford got a huge penalty called in their favor, setting them up with fantastic field position and a chance to tie the game. It was the running game that has given the Cardinal their truly unstoppable offense all season, and of course it was Stepfan Taylor who rumbled into the end zone from two yards out on a huge drive by the Cardinal to tie the game at 34.

Finally, Andrew Luck will face his first real test of the season.

The Stanford Cardinal are set to travel to Los Angeles to take on the USC Trojans on ABC in prime time, one of the first times this season that Stanford will be truly tested.

USC is 6-1 and fresh off of a victory against Notre Dame on the road, and they boast arguably the nation’s top passing duo with Matt Barkley and sophomore receiver Robert Woods. The two have hooked up 72 times this season, eight for touchdowns including a couple of highlight reel plays against the Irish.

Stats

2010: 89 tackles, 3 INT, 1 sack, 3 Tackles for loss, 4 passes broken up

2011 (through 10/20/2011)

31 tackles, 2 INT, 1 tackle for loss, 1 pass broken up

Pros–Obviously a very gifted athlete…can play in-line or deep as a free safety…has a nose for the ball…solid form tackler, complete safety prospect who is a team captain this season as a junior..good straight-line speed…definitely one of the best safeties in his class…lays some big hits…has some return ability…decent blitzer…has the athletic ability to cover people man on man in the slot and the size to challenge tight ends…pretty good hands…

Cons–slight injury issues…slightly over-aggressive at times…but doesn’t have a lot of glaring weaknesses in his game…sometimes goes for bit hit and loses form, but often makes the sure tackle…quicker receives will be able to take advantage of him in space…

USC Trojans vs. Cal Bears NFL Prospects to Watch: QB Matt Barkley in Prime Time

It seems odd to me that the masses had to wait until mid-October to get a USC game in prime time, but nevertheless, here we are with Matt Barkley’s crew taking on in-state rival Cal at 9 PM ET on ESPN tonight.

It’s going to be critical for Barkley and company to make sure they maintain focus for this game without looking forward to their next two games against Notre Dame and Stanford, two games that will determine the rest of their season, in all likelihood.

As always, USC is flooded with kids who are capable of playing in the NFL, but as of right now, many of them are still youngsters. Aside from their junior signal caller, the most dynamic playmaker the Trojans feature offensively is 19 year old sophomore Robert Woods, a 6’1″ 180 pound receiver out of Carson, California.

Woods has 55 catches for 747 yards this season, second and third in the country, respectively. His six touchdowns also lead the Trojans, and he should have another huge game on Thursday with a relatively soft Cal defense (as we saw last week vs. Oregon).
