Scouting Report

Robinson is a versatile player with great size who can line up in a variety of different spots for Arizona State. His length allows him to really stretch the field down the seam, and he will be used in the slot sometimes as a result. He is a size mismatch with most every cornerback he faces, and he has a huge wingspan and huge hands. Really nice quickness and works the middle of the field really well. Knows how to get open and shield defenders. Doesn’t always give consistent effort in the running game, and he will drop some easy passes while making incredible catches, an inconsistency that seems to be pretty common in college receivers. Does a pretty good job of catching the ball away from his body, snatching the ball out of the air rather than letting it come into his chest or stomach. Actually is used out of the slot a lot for the Sun Devils, allowing him to get size mismatches with nickel corners and create openings on the outside for some of ASU’s other big receivers. Not overly aggressive after the catch, something you’d like to see out of a 6’4″ 225 pound kid.

Vontaze Burfict Needs a Huge Game Against Boise State

Tonight the Arizona State Devils will take on the Boise State Broncos in a game that is filled with potential N.F.L. talent.

The highlight of the class is clearly Vontaze Burfict. Burfict has everything you could possibly look for in a linebacker prospect. He’s big, violent, ahs good range, long arms, can rush the passer. He has one problem though, he can’t play smart football. This guy has Patrick Willis/Ray Lewis type upside, but he just can’t stay away from personal fouls and stupid mistakes. There are reports that he has been benched for this game in essence becoming the second string linebacker. We’ll have to watch and find out tonight if that’s true. Burfict needs a good, smart, game tonight.

Quarterback Brock Osweiler

Osweiler, right now is a fringe top 100 prospect who has great high and makes a lot of plays. He is very inexperienced though, but is a guy to really watch for next year. Osweiler could develop into a first round pick next year-he has that kind of ability, but he’s not near  there yet.

Brock Osweiler doesn't have a ton of experience, but he's really gaining momentum

Each week we’ll chat with our sister site’s WWW.withthefirstpick.com ‘s editor Ty MaCdonnel about things of interest for the 2012 N.F.L. draft. This week we discussed Brock Osweiler, Andrew Luck, and what the weakest position in the draft is for 2012.

1) Thoughts on Arizona State QB Brock Osweiler, who is really gaining some momentum as a QB Prospect?

The first thing that obviously stands out about Osweiler is his size. He is 6-8 and 240 pounds and has a canon for an arm. I was very impressed when I watched him play USC last month. I am sure many will compare him to last years draft wild card Ryan Mallett. Like Mallett, he has the size and arm strength that teams look for at the NFL level. However, he does not have the same character concerns that pushed Mallett out of the first round last year. Osweiler is a very intriguing prospect but he might be better off going back to ASU for another year and improve his draft stock. This years draft is already loaded with first round prospects with Luck, Jones, and Barkley and I cant see him moving past any of those three. However, he could be a top ten pick in 2013 if he continues to play well for another season. But to answer your question I definitely like him as a prospect and he is someone to watch out for whether he declares this year or next.

2) What are your thoughts on the Andrew Luck drama that might be developing here…the report that Luck might try to force the hand of a team a la Eli Manning/John Elway?

I am a die hard Miami Dolphins fan and the only hope I have to help me get through this dismal year is the thought that Andrew Luck might be donning Aqua next September. However, the thought of my team finishing last and having the best football prospect of the past decade decide he doesn’t want to play for us is terrifying. But I still don’t trust alot of rumors and reports leading up to the draft. This time last year it was 99.9% assumed that Luck would declare for last years draft, but things changed. So much happens at draft time and people change their minds and have their own agenda’s they are looking out for, so nothing is ever set in stone. Still, I am sure Luck’s camp can see that both St. Louis and Indianapolis have legitimate shots at drafting first overall and both have established quarterbacks. And although I am sure St. Louis would try to trade the pick, Indy would most likely draft Luck and have him play behind Manning (assuming he gets healthy) for a few years, ala Rodgers in Green Bay. Luck has the talent to play immediately and I am sure he would prefer not to have to wait his turn in Indy or have to face constant Manning comparisons throughout his career. It probably isn’t a bad idea for his camp to send out a few threats to help better his pro-situation but I am skeptical to trust these reports right now.

Oregon RB Kenjon Barner

Playing without your two best players is usually a recipe for disaster, especially when they are the key components to your offensive attack.

The Oregon Ducks simply say, “No problem, next man up!”

Without both LaMichael James and Darron Thomas (not the entire game, though) the Ducks were able to pound Arizona State despite a very good first half from ASU quarterback Brock Osweiler.

Oregon was simply too fast both offensively and defensively in the long run, mostly wearing down the Sun Devil defense with a solid ground game and very good decision making from Oregon’s backup quarterback Bryan Bennett.

The true breakout player from this game though was Oregon running back Kenjon Barner, a 5’11″ 180 pound junior out of Riverside, California. Barner saw his most extensive work of the season with James sidelined, carrying the ball 31 times for 171 yards and a touchdown.

Round 1

1. Washington Redskins Andrew Luck QB Stanford Andrew Luck has to be the favorite to go #1 overall.  Washington finished at the bottom of my 2011 NFL Power Rankings.

2. Miami Dolphins Matt Barkley QB USC Matt Barkley plays in a pro style offense at USC.  His quick release made offensive lineman like Matt Kalil and Tyron Smith look better than they actually are.  Barkley was the #1 recruit in the country coming out of high school and was the original favorite to go #1 overall back in 2009.  Luck’s breakout year in 2010 before returning to school has now made Luck the favorite to go #1 overall, but I see both quarterbacks going early.

USC is bowl ineligible so Matt Barkley would be wise to jump ship to the NFL in 2012 and in the end that is what I believe he will end up doing.
