Michigan State and Georgia are playing each other in the Outback Bowl and both teams have a lot of different prospects that you will want to be looking for. Here are some of my favorites:

Michigan State features an offensive attack that is really on the rise, led by quarterback Kirk Cousins. Cousins and company were very, very close to coming back and winning the Big Ten title this season, and he was a big reason for it. He threw for over 3,000 yards with 24 touchdowns and only seven interceptions completing 65 percent of his passes. I have not been overly impressed with Cousins this year, but there are people who believe he is a second round talent. I think you could see him benefit from Matt Barkley staying in school and possibly get drafted earlier than he might otherwise have.

Cousins has a couple of really good seniors to sling the ball to in B.J. Cunningham and Keshawn Martin, two guys who have been making plays for the MSU offense all year long. The two have combined for 19 total touchdowns, 12 for Cunningham and 7 for Martin.

Martin can hurt you as a receiver, out of the backfield, or as a punt returner, and Cunningham has great size and has clearly been the favorite target of Cousins this season.

A Michigan State fan might look at this game and say that Wisconsin killed Nebraska, and their team beat Wisconsin, so this game is in the bag, right? As the great Lee Corso would say, “Not so fast, my friend!” This is far from a sure thing as the Huskers followed up that loss to Wisconsin with a big comeback against Ohio State and a dominating victory over Minnesota, in which their coach said they gave “B” effort in the running game.

MSU’s defense has been stout this season, and they were able to beat two of the top rushing teams in Wisconsin and Michigan. The question is, can their defense do it for a third consecutive week against a fellow BCS contender?

Wisconsin Quarterback Russel Wilson has really had a stellar season, but he let their undefeated season come to an end on Saturday night as he wasn’t able to overcome some mental mistakes and a fluky game ending touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins. Wilson, the rest of the badgers, and Big 10 nation watched in horror as Michigan State caught a last second Hail Mary Touchdown pass that was knocked down by Wisconsin right into the hands of Keith Nichol who fought forward for the final yard. The play was originally ruled no touchdown, and then it went to review and it was overturned to a touchdown. The replay was difficult because the camera angles we were seeing at home were shaking, though it looked like it might be the right call. Was the evidence indisputable? That’s where the controversy begins.

Throughout the game Wilson missed a few open wide receivers as he didn’t make great reads and was a little careless with the football. Wilson throw two interceptions and also fumbled a ball while scrambling which luckily bounced out of bounds. Wilson also made a bad decision when he didn’t get outside the tackle box to throw the ball away costing the Badgers a safety.

These are two teams with no love lost and you can bet that Spartan Stadium will be rocking for this Big Ten and in-state rivalry game, one that features some intriguing NFL prospects.

Likely, the two best prospects as of right now are coming in the trenches, with Michigan center David Molk and Spartan defensive tackle Jerel Worthy, both of whom are NFL Mocks midseason All-Americans. Molk and the Michigan offense are absolutely cleaning house this season, dismantling anything that stands in their way.

Likewise, the Michigan State Spartans are playing some really tough defense, only allowing only 10.2 points per game, good for third in the nation. Worthy is having a very good season, commanding double teams and allowing guys behind him to make plays. If Michigan State were more capable offensively, I would think they would be heavily favored in this home game, but alas, that is not the case.

Spartans Analysis: MSU 28 Youngstown State 6

What Happened:

It was not pretty. Luckily, all wins count the same. It is often said that teams improve the most between games 1 and games 2. For the Spartans sake I hope that is true. Offensively, the passing game was solid but the rushing game was only so/so. Defensivel,y the Spartans only allowed 6 points. They had a hard time stopping the Penguins rushing attack. They allowed 128 yards. Both lines of scrimmage need to get their act together this week. Though this is not surprising since the lines of scrimmage have 6 new starters (out of 9 possible positions).

No worries Spartan nation. This was an abnormal week for the Spartans. Friday night game, Dantonio’s father passing away, and it was the first game of the year. Though many are surprised, I am not. Spartans play many sloppy games…the true test is next week.

What We Learned:

1. Kirk Cousins, when given time, will carve up defenses. He was 18-22, 222, 1 TD and 0 interceptions. Problems arise when he is under pressure. I have always had questions about his ability to process information quickly.

2. Le’Veon Bell will be the red zone back. While only receiving 9 carries, he scored on two short Touch Down runs. He is a force in short yardage situations.

3. BJ Cunningham might be ready to take the leap into Pro Prospect stratosphere. His 9 receptions, 130 yards, and 1 Touch Down made for a big day. He tied the MSU record for career receptions…that is saying something. Mushin Muhammad, Derrick Mason, Charles Rogers, and Andre Rison played at Michigan State. Keep an eye on this kid.

B+: Mark Dantonio has transformed the Spartans expectations to perhaps a 6-7 win season with possibilities of a Bowl Game—to 10 wins and possible Rose Bowl appearance. He has the Spartans moving in the right direction and has given us Spartan fans hope for the first time since Nick Saban left…many will say Nick Saban actually coached the Spartans??? Dan Roushar is taking over the OC job for Don Treadwell who received the HC job at Miami of Ohio. Roushar was the OL coach. I will miss Treadwell for his steady hand as OC, as well as being a great #2 to Dantonio. Roushar has been an OC 4 other times in his career and the offense should resemble Treadwells balanced offense. Narduzzi runs a 4-3 with an occasional 3-4 look. It will be interesting to see how this defense runs without Greg Jones since this will be the first time since the new regime got here that they do not feature Jones as the centerpiece of the defense.
