Fiesta Bowl Recap: Oklahoma State Wins and Andrew Luck, Justin Blackmon Look Like Top Five Picks

It was a hard fought game for Andrew Luck and the Stanford Cardinal, but in the end, they just couldn’t close it out. Their kicker had a chance to win it in regulation and give Stanford a lead in overtime, but he failed to do both from what should be point-blank range for a division one scholarship kicker, or even a kid who is walking on at a BCS school. Still, the Cardinal had other opportunities to close out the game, and they failed to do so.

The two biggest things to take away from this game–obviously–were Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon and Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. Luck is going to be the number one pick in the draft without question, so you can start printing up #12 Colts jerseys with his name on it.

Blackmon scored three touchdowns, including one that tied the game at 31 in the fourth quarter. He also had a huge fourth down catch that allowed the Cowboys to tie the game with just over 2:30 left. He looked clutch all night, making catches and finding a way to get himself open. At times, there weren’t even any members of Stanford near him.

Weeden is talented, but will his age scare teams away?

Today the Oklahoma State Cowboys will take on the Stanford Cardinal in the Fiesta Bowl. In this game there are a good number of prospects to watch, especially on the offensive side of the ball for these teams. Here are a few of the prospects you want to be watching in tonight’s game.

Of all of the games today, this game features the most first round prospects (or maybe the South Carolina Game/Nebraska game did)

Stanford Cardinal

Andrew Luck, QB

If you haven’t seen him play, tonight’s the night. Though the Cowboys defense is nothing spectacular so it could be a very good statistical night for Andrew Luck. Luck is mobile, big, good arm, smart and has really good anticipation. Good fundamentals. He’s a very good prospect. The thing you love about Luck is he has continued to produce despite who he is throwing passes to.

David DeCastro, G

The only guard in any of the years I’ve been covering/following the draft who could be a consensus top 10 prospect on big boards. Drafting a guard in the top 15 isn’t a popular trend, but one DeCastro could buckle. He’s solid in all facets of the game. A plus player. He’s also a first round pick.

STATS: Weeden was redshirted in 2007. As a redshirt freshman in 2008 Weeden went 1 for 3 with 8 passing yards a freshman reshirt. In 2009 as a sophomore redshirt Weeden went 15 for 24 as a sophomore redshirt with 248 passing yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. Weeden was a backup at Oklahoma State to Zac Robinson.

Weeden only took 8 sacks all of last season in 2010. Weeden has already taken 7 sacks through 5 games as a senior redshirt.

DRAFT STATUS: Weeden turns 28 years old on Friday (10/13/2011). He is 45 days older than Super Bowl 45 MVP Aaron Rodgers. Weeden will get drafted. Its hard to tell if Weeden’s age will effect his draft stock.

Can Justin Blackmon win back to back Biletnikoff Award’s for Oklahoma State after winning last year’s 2010 Biletnikoff Award?

Offensive Outlook: Quarterback Brandon Weeden returns for his senior campaign. Weeden may play in a gimmick offense, but he posted outstanding numbers. Weeden had 4,277 passing yards, 34 passing touchdowns, completed nearly 67 percent of his passes, and averaged 329 passing yards per game.

Round 1

1. Washington Redskins Andrew Luck QB Stanford Andrew Luck has to be the favorite to go #1 overall. Washington finished at the bottom of my 2011 NFL Power Rankings.

2. Miami Dolphins Matt Barkley QB USC Matt Barkley plays in a pro style offense at USC. His quick release made offensive lineman like Matt Kalil and Tyron Smith look better than they actually are. Barkley was the #1 recruit in the country coming out of high school and was the original favorite to go #1 overall back in 2009. Luck’s breakout year in 2010 before returning to school has now made Luck the favorite to go #1 overall, but I see both quarterbacks going early.

USC is bowl ineligible so Matt Barkley would be wise to jump ship to the NFL in 2012 and in the end that is what I believe he will end up doing.

Justin Blackmon--Top WR in 2012?

Oklahoma State is always known for their top of the line offense, and this year will be no different. The top flight unit is led by quarterback Brandon Weeden and wide receiver Justin Blackmon, who hooked up for 20 touchdowns through the air last year. This is a high powered offensive attack, and it’s no coincidence that that side of the ball is where the major talent is coming from. There are a couple of blue-chip guys coming out of the ‘Pokes’ system, and they have some guys who could be big time contributors in the NFL right away.

73 Levy Adcock (Seni0r), OT, 6’6″ 325

Massive offensive tackle prospect with size and athletic ability. Obviously excels in pass protection, and was a first team All-Big 12 selection in 2010. Former junior college transfer from the class of 2009, who can play either guard or right tackle, and has lined up as a fourth tight end in some sets. It’s definitely possible if not probable that Adcock will move to guard in the NFL, but we will see how he fares in 2011. He is certainly athletic enough to hold up as a right tackle, and he has the size to play either spot and be an immediate starter. An education major who wants to someday be a coach, and a guy who is tough as nails on the interior. Very solid prospect, and a big reason why the Oklahoma State offense will have great success. Not a similar player to Russell Okung, by any means, but a 2nd-3rd round guy in all likelihood.
