There was a time when the Los Angeles Chargers were one of the premier teams in the NFL when it came to producing high quality wide receivers.

Lance Alworth, Charlie Joiner, John Jefferson and Anthony Miller were just some of their big success stories. However, it seems things have really changed over the past decade. Suddenly the team has had some really rotten luck at the position. Their 2007 first round pick Craig Davis was a bust due to injury problems. Vincent Jackson spurned the team over money issues. Vincent Brown and Keenan Allen both struggled or continue to struggle staying healthy.

It seems like every receiver they touch has something go wrong, and now the same may be coming true for their 1st round pick Mike Williams. According to Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapaport of NFL.com the health of his back is in rough shape due to a herniated disc. Whether he will play in 2017 remains up in the air.

"“NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Wednesday that wideout Mike Williams, the No. 7 overall selection in the draft, is likely to start camp on the physically unable to perform list following a second epidural on the herniated disc in his lower back, per a source informed of the rookie’s status.Garafolo offered a “glimmer of good news,” noting that the former Clemson star resumed running this week and is “feeling better” after the second procedure, which was first reported by ESPN.”"

Philip Rivers can’t continue miracle work forever

Veteran quarterback Philip Rivers once again may have to juggle a receiving lineup without one of its critical targets. Last season was rough for the Chargers as several of their top targets went down with injury including Keenan Allen, Travis Benjamin and Tyrell Williams. That was a big reason that Mike Williams was drafted in the first place. The hope was to create some stability at that critical position. Now this happens.

Rivers is running out of time. He can’t carry this team to a championship without help. The defense and running game are steps in the right direction. The last piece to the puzzle is the receivers. If Williams has to go on the shelf? That’s a pretty rough body blow for a team whose window is closing.
