By all signs the Los Angeles Rams had a simple plan in mind. Retool the coaching staff in order to make Jared Goff a success at quarterback.

Makes perfect sense. He’s the #1 overall pick from 2016 and has plenty of ability. Jeff Fisher, for all his experience, lost his credibility within the organization to do that. Sean McVay, though young is coming off his successful stint help to turn Kirk Cousins into a Pro Bowler with the Washington Redskins. If he could do that, there’s no reason to think he can’t figure something out that will make Goff a viable starter in L.A.

At the same time there are growing reports out of the organization that the leash isn’t exactly as long as people think with him. In fact Bleacher Report hinted he’s in considerable danger from none other than his primary backup Sean Mannion.

When rubber meets road

It’s easy to forget that Mannion was a 3rd round pick for the Rams in 2015. Clearly some in the organization thought he could play. He’s certainly got the body for it at 6’5″, 230 lbs. Coming out of Oregon State it was always felt he had certain traits that might translate into a possible starter if he was able to quicken his read-react timing. NFL.com expert Lance Zierlein compared him to former Pro Bowler Matt Schaub.

"“Tall, rhythm thrower who shows an ability to play with confidence and accuracy when used as a game manager within an offense featuring a strong rushing attack. Mannion needs plays to stay on schedule or his confidence becomes shaky and the turnovers start rolling in.”"

Remember that McVay knows what his primary job is with the Rams. Sure the team would like him to make Goff a success, but as head coach his top priority is winning football games. If Mannion actually does give them a better chance to do that, then there is no reason to think they won’t go with him when forced to make a final decision.
