KD Cannon is one of the faster wide receivers in the 2017 NFL Draft. But will that speed translate to production in the NFL?

A heavily-pursued recruit out of high school, wide receiver KD Cannon committed to Baylor due to the high octane offense they ran. This would give him a lot of opportunity for some big-time production. Unfortunately, his collegiate career would begin amidst the massive scandal surrounding head coach Art Briles.

While Cannon questioned his commitment to the Bears, he ultimately decided to stay. His decision led to Freshman All-American honors after gaining 1,030 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2015, he was named second-team All-BIG 12 and finished with 868 yards and six touchdowns. He bounced back in 2016, earning first-team All-BIG 12 honors.

Measurables

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 182 lbs

Arms: 31 inches

40-Yard: 4.41 seconds

Strengths

KD Cannon has tremendous athleticism and speed, as evidenced by his 4.41 second 40-yard time and 37-inch vertical at the Combine. He has the dangerous ability as a vertical threat, capable of taking the top off the defense, and has appealing raw traits.

His size isn’t necessarily a concern as he demonstrated the toughness to fight through tackles. Cannon survived a lot of adversity during the challenges that surrounded the Baylor program and displayed the mental toughness to continue producing at a high level.

Against Rice, he put together an extremely impressive performance finishing the game with 213 yards on nine catches and two touchdowns.

Weaknesses

While the high-octane, widespread offense was a big reason for Cannon committing to Baylor, it also significantly limited his route tree. His inexperience in this regard will likely have to be coached and developed at the next level.

Appears to be more of a body catcher, rather than using his hands. While tough, his size will push him outside. Won’t fit in the slot, as he lacks the quickness to gain separation.

Final Thoughts

KD Cannon has an intriguing skill-set. His speed is dangerous and makes him a threat to take it home each down he’s on the field. He’s tough, both physically and mentally, and will likely continue to get better in the NFL.

If he can develop his route tree and continuing to work on catching with his hands rather than his body, he could see a lot of playing time early.
