It seems the John Lynch Deshone Kizer man crush is continuing as the San Francisco 49ers GM keeps close tabs on the Notre Dame quarterback.

Be honest now. Does anybody really think that Brian Hoyer is the future of this franchise? Of course not. Sure, Kirk Cousins may yet still be a possibility but there is no way to bank on that. The 49ers have to keep every avenue possible open to them. It’s the most important position in professional sports. So the draft will remain their primary source until otherwise.

Lynch knows his team needs a quarterback, no matter what the PR team keeps trying to feed people with this “patience” angle. Odds are very strong the 49ers will take one of the top prospects either at #2 overall or early in the 2nd round. One name the young GM seems to have locked onto is Kizer of the Irish.

A few weeks ago that admiration was hinted at strongly when referencing the interview he had with the team.

"“This whole thing is not just about an interview, but if you were grading him on that alone, he blew the doors off. He’s an impressive young man, his film’s very impressive,” Lynch said Thursday. “I think the same can be said for Deshaun Watson. You watch what he’s done, just putting a team on his shoulders and taking down a great champion. (Mitch) Trubisky, (Patrick) Mahomes, I think it’s a very talented draft class at that position, one we’re very excited about.”"

Indeed according to Mike Mayock and others, Kizer remains widely viewed as the most pro-ready quarterback prospect in this class. He’s big, athletic, intelligent and boasts a strong arm to make any throw in the playbook. There are lingering concerns about his slow processor, being unable to read and react quickly to disguised blitzes or coverages that defenses throw at him. Not to mention worry that he struggles to get over mistakes he makes during games.

Such thing at least don’t appear to bother Lynch. He was in attendance at the Notre Dame pro day and seemed to be watching Kizer closely throughout.

It’s easy to understand why. Lynch has something other teams don’t. He has Kyle Shanahan. One of the best and brightest offensive minds in the NFL. A second generation coaching talent fresh off turning Matt Ryan into league MVP. If anybody can get the most of Kizer’s vast potential, it would be him. So the 49ers can afford to take that sort of gamble. Often having the proper coaching in place is the key difference to such picks being made. One thing is for sure. Look for them to be in play for his services, either at #2 or later in the 1st round.
